    Were you aware that theres a long history of clowning in Mexico? Or that a unique musical version of bingo is played in that country? Swing by Harbourfront Friday through Sunday for Corazn de Mxico and youll realize theres more to Mexican culture than mariachi music, mezcal and tequila. The free, three-day celebration of all things Mexican features an impressive line-up of concerts, dance, theatre and family activities. Therell be lots of food, too, and youll have the opportunity to learn how to make tinga mini tostadas and lime and chia agua fresco. (Youll find out what that is when you get there.)     Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; Nortec Collective who mix Norteo music with techno Saturday at 9 p.m.; Cecilia Guerrero, a Mexican ranchera singer, Sunday at 12:30 p.m.; and Caf Con Pan, a duo who specialize in son jarocho, a music and dance style indigenous to southern Veracruz that has Spanish, African and indigenous Mexican elements, at 1 p.m. Sunday. Alec Dempster and his wife Kali Nio Mendoza, who comprise Caf Con Pan, will also be conducting a fun and

    interesting workshop thats based on the Mexican form of bingo. The traditional loteria game, which is like bingo, originated in Italy, spread to Spain and reached Mexico in 1769, Dempster explains. This was an emblematic rather than numerical bingo with a series of images which became iconic. Someone with a poetic flair would recite phrases relating to the images as the cards were revealed, he adds. The game was played at travelling fairs and was a type of gambling that was still permitted when other games of chance were prohibited. It is still played all over Mexico. However, what we are doing at Harbourfront is completely different, Dempster

    says. This loteria is calles El Fandanguito (The little fandango). This is a new version of the game which I came up with based on the 60 traditional sones which constitute the son jarocho repertoire. Dempster says he spent two years illustrating them and then asked Zenen Zeferino, who is a highly revered jarocho poet/singer, to write a special verse for each card in his loteria deck. I then borrowed money from friends to have a thousand games printed, and Kali and I began to travel to regional festivals to play the game, which involves singing all of the 60 songs while the participants hope that we sing the songs on their bingo board. The two say they hope to
