with them, experiencing their world, she tells me. Weve always been about gaining their trust and respect. I think many musicians from other cultures have a real fear of being exploited since theres been an endless cycle of using people for your own advancement. Weve never been about just going in and getting out. Bunnett and her husband, trumpeter Larry Cramer, have visited the island more than 50 times since they first went there in 1982 and caught the music bug. Theyve recorded in Cuba and Canada since 1991, and theyve paid the price financially, physically and mentally. Theyve cut through tons of red tape over the years to
take Cuban musicians on tour in the U.S., theyve put up musicians in their Parkdale home for up to three months, and Bunnett came c l o s e t o t h row i ng i n t h e towel in 2007. When the Helms-Burton Act aimed at tightening the U.S. economic embargo of Cuba was passed in 1996, Bunnett says several concerts that had been scheduled almost two years prior were cancelled, as was a record deal with Sony Music. She refused to bow to political pressure and says her commitment to their musical friends proved their passion for Cuban music was real. I recall her tearing up when I asked her back in 1996 if she ever thought making music would draw her into a political situation. Making music with the people that I have has taken me to some incredible places, and I dont mean just physically, she told me then. Ive always been drawn to music that enriched my life, but I
never realized how deep the connection would go. Im tied to Cuba. I say Im not a political person, but when politics starts to affect your livelihood and musicians of this calibre ... she trailed off. Bunnett, whos been exploring and playing Cuban music long before Ry Cooder cut his Buena Vista Social Club record, calls the Cuban music scene here incredible. When we started, there was nothing, she says. The great (pianist) Hilario Duran, who we brought here, is now a major player not only in Canada but the world. (Drummer) David Virelles, who we also brought out of Cuba, has been teaching at Humber and is a major player in New York. But it all comes back to the pretty intense relationships shes forged with Cuban musicians. Bunnett recalls the major creative crash she experienced five years back and credits her collaborators for inspiring her to keep the faith.
I think the musical connection with my many musical friends there helped me get over that low, she says. Grupo Vocal Desandann (the awesome 10-member vocal group who graced her 2008 record, Embracing Voices) was making music that few were familiar with but they were all about making music for musics sake. I cant tell you how fortunate we feel to have met all these people. NOTE: Jane Bunnett & The Spirits of Havana, with special guests Heavyweights Brass Band, are at Hughs Room tonight. 8:30 p.m. $35. Her 2-CD retrospective, Mundo: The World Of Jane Bunnett, will be released on Feb. 14. It features 25 cuts taken from 16 albums recorded between 1989 and 2008, and includes two new tracks Bunnett recorded with Heavyweights Brass Band.
