CALENDAR July
OF
EVENTS
Independence Day, also known as the 4th of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of our Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, from the Kingdom of Great Britain. On this day, we enjoy fireworks, parades, carnivals, fairs, cookouts, entertainment, family reunions, and ceremonies. Furthermore, we partake in various other events celebrating our nations history. Happy 4th of July! For those traveling in the states, plan your trips to ensure you arrive safely. If you are going to be in the Camp Lejeune area, the annual celebration on base will have free food and entertainment. Be sure to look for the CLR-27 tent. Marine Corps Family Team Building workshops designed for both parents and children of deployed Marines and Sailors. All participants are guaranteed to meet other family members that they share things in common with AND learn something, whether this is the first or fifth deployment. Last but not least, on Wednesday, 27 July, our FRO has scheduled a special Spa Night just for our spouses, in which participants will receive a discount for services. As always, I encourage you to take advantage of at least one opportunity in this newsletter, whether it is family, financial or physical fitness. Semper Fi! John P. Flynn Major, USMC
Here is the rest of the story: After getting the contract, Andrew Higgins demanded the Federal government renegotiate his contract down. Thats right, Higgins wanted less money for his war winning creation, because he felt it wasnt right to make huge profits when young Americans would soon be dying in battle. Andrew Higgins is a name that everyone who loves the Marine Corps and America should remember Happy 4th of July. Chaps
President Dwight Eisenhower said, ? ? is the man who won the war for us. Adolph Hitler bitterly called him the New Noah. Who was this super hero? Andrew Higgins. Who was Andrew Higgins? He was an American entrepreneur and patriot who built boats for rum runners, the Coast Guard, and during WWII, the mighty Higgins Boat or LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel). Whats the LCVP? Its the mighty little boat that made it possible to move troops and equipment from ships to shore and win the battles of the Pacific, North Africa and Normandy. There isnt space to write the history of the Higgins Boat, but suffice it to say the Marine Corps wanted it and the Navy and Federal bureaucracy didnt. With the help of Marine Generals Holland M. Smith and Victor Brute Krulak, America got the Higgins Boat, and the rest was history. (So did the Marines win WII? Eisenhower and his Army peers are rolling over in their graves at that thought.)

The month of June was a hot one. With the temperature rising over 100 degrees daily, it wasnt always fun, but your Marines and Sailors of 2d Marine Logistics Group (2d MLG) carried on with the mission as cool as they can be. Weve had two new motivators join the 2d MLG family: Carmina Calderon and Jackson Ellis. Congratulations to families, and we would like to welcome our new baby devil pups to the 2d MLG family. Our Sailors have been making some waves by representing the Headquarters and Service Company in an outstanding fashion as always. These Sailors won the Board for Sailor of the Second Quarter: Seaman Letts (G-1) won the Blue Jacket of the Quarter; HM2 Croxton (G-3) won Sailor of the Quarter and HM1 Carr (CAS) won Senior Sailor of the Quarter. Congratulations to these outstanding individuals. With some of our warriors getting ready to transition back to the states and other coming out here to support the mission, these warriors have not lost focus and are doing great thinks to support every service member in theater. Have a happy and safe 4th of July, and thank you to the families and friends for their constant support and motivation. Semper Fi! Jerry E. Lopez 1stSgt Lopez, USMC
