TOPIC: FUNCTIONS AND RATIONAL FUNCTIONS
FIRST SEMESTER – QUARTER 1 – WEEK 1 and 2
TO THE LEARNERS
Here are some reminders as you use this module:
✓ Use the module with care especially in turning each page.
✓ Read and comprehend the directions in every exercises.
✓ Observe honesty in answering the tests and exercises.
✓ Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of this material.
✓ Try to finish a given activity before proceeding to the next.
LESSON OBJECIVES:
At the end of this lesson, the students must be able to:
1. Define functions;
2. Evaluate a function; and
3. Perform the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of function.
4. Define rational function, rational expression and rational expression;
5. Evaluate rational function, rational expression and rational inequalities; and
6. Differentiate rational function, rational expression and rational inequalities from each other.
FUNCTIONS
What is function?
Example:
The amount of money a worker makes is a function of how many hours he works. The number of
hours the worker spends on his job is called the independent variable, while the amount of money he
makes is called the dependent variable.
What is function?
- is a relationship between two (2) sets of variables, X and Y, such that each value of set X is
associated with exactly one value of set Y, the first set of independent variables is the domain, while the
second set of dependent variables is the range.
Example:
Note: for each independent variable, there exist only one corresponding dependent variable.
EVALUATION OF FUNCTIONS
- a process of functions is a process of calculating the value of a function (Y) for given values of
(X). The process is done by substituting the numerical values of x to the given function.
Examples:
Examples:
If f ∧g function defined by f ( x )=x 2−2 and g ( x )=x−2, find the following in simplified
form:
RATIONAL FUNCTIONS
- is any function which can be written as the ratio of two polynomial functions, where the
polynomial in the denominator is not equal to zero.
Examples:
2 x+3
R ( x )= 2
3 x −2
2(2)+3
R ( x )=
3 (2)2 −2
4+3 7
¿ ¿
12−2 10
x2 −1
R ( x )=
2 x +1
(−2)2−1
R ( x )=
2(−2)+1
4−1 3
¿ ¿
−4 +1 −3
¿−1
RATIONAL EXPRESSIONS
- is nothing more than a fraction in which the numerator and/or the denominator are polynomial.
Examples:
2 3 1
+ =
x 4x 2
Solution: The LCD of x, 4x and 2 is 4x. Hence, multiply each side of the equation by 4x.
4x ( 2x + 43x )=( 12 ) 4 x
8 x 12 x 4 x
+ =
x 4x 2
8+3=2 x
2 x=11
2 x 11
=
2 2
1
x=5
2
2 10
+ =1
3 x
Solution: The LCD of 3 and x is 3x. Hence, multiply each side of the equation by 3x.
3x ( 32 + 10x )=(1)3 x
6 x 30 x
+ =3 x
3 x
2 x+30=3 x
2 x−3 x=−30
−x=−30
−x −30
=
−1 −1
x=30
RATIONAL INEQUALITIES
Inequality Symbols
Example:
x+4
3
x−2
Solution:
Subtract 3 from each side to obtain 0 on the right side of the inequality.
x+4
−3 3−3
x−2
x+4
−3 0
x−2
Multiply each side by the common denominator x-2 to obtain:
x + 4 3 ( x−2 )
− 0
x−2 ( x−2 )
x + 4 ( 3 x−6 )
− 0
x−2 ( x −2 )
x+ 4−3 x+6
0
x−2
−2 x +10
0
x−2
2 x−10
0
x −2
- Hence, the solution set is the quotient of 2 x−10 and x−2 is less than or equal to 0.
