AMPLITUDE

The Amplitude of a body is the angle at the

observer’s zenith or the arc of his rational
horizon contained between the observer’s prime
vertical and the vertical circle through the body,
at theoretical rising or setting.
For Example
On January 1, 2020
Latitude of the observer is 60°N
Longitude is 000°

Declination of the Sun is 23 ° S

Time of Sunrise in the Nautical almanac is
0900H

Meridian Passage is 1203H

Time of Sunset is 1506H

Example of Southerly Amplitude at

Zenith
How to know if it is Northerly or
southerly of the Prime vertical
• For a body with northerly declination, the
amplitude will be northward of e or w and
• For a body with southerly declination, the
amplitude will be southward of e or w
Formula for Amplitude
First the body must be rising or setting.
At the horizon
Amplitude and azimuth angle are compliment

Amplitude = 90 – Z
Azimuth angle = 90 -amplitude

Sin Amp = Sin dec / cos lat

Amp = Sin-1( Sin dec / cos lat)
Example
At Jan 1, 2020 in position Lat 13 °N
Long 179 ° W GMT 1820H, officer of the watch
sighted the sun rise.

Declination of the sun is 23 ° S

What is the amplitude of the sun?
Amp = Sin-1( Sin dec / cos lat)

= Sin-1( Sin 23 ° ÷ cos 13 °)

= Sin-1 ( 0.40)

Amplitude = 23.6 ° S’ly

True bearing is 90 + 23.6 °

= 113.6 ° T

AZIMUTH AND AMPLITUDE
In solving COMPASS ERROR
Example
At Jan 1, 2020 in position Lat 13 °N
Long 179 ° W GMT 1820H, officer of the watch
sighted the Gyro bearing of sunrise 114° Pgc.
Gyro course is 050 ° compass course is 045°
Variation is 7°E.

Find the gyro and compass error and solve for

deviation
Gø = 114 ° Always minus
Tø = 113.6 °
GE= 0.4 ° W Compass best error west
GC= 050 °
TC= 049.6 ° E plus W minus
CC= 045 ° Always minus
CE= 4.6 °E Compass best error west
Var= 7 ° E (W) Always reverse the direction

Dev= 2.4 W Same name add, unlike name

minus and take the name of the
Larger value
Gø = 114 °
Tø = 113.6 ° C = 045 °
GE= 0.4 ° W D = 2.4 ° W
GC= 050 ° M = 042.6 °
TC= 049.6 ° V = 7°E
CC= 045 ° T = 049.6 °
CE= 4.6 °E
Var= 7 ° E (W)
Dev= 2.4 ° W
To find the True bearing / Azimuth
We can use the formula for Azimuth angle (Z)
By ABC method anytime of the day
