1. Input Data:

No. of levels (including ground & basement floor) = 6

Average level height = 4 m
Floor Area = m2
Exterior building wall area per floor = 420 m2
Wall Tightness = 2 (1=Tight, 2=Average, 3=Loose, 4=Very Loose)
Stairwell wall area per floor = 80.8 m2
Wall Tightness = 2 (1=Tight, 2=Average, 3=Loose)
Elevator shaft walls = m2
Wall Tightness = (1=Tight, 2=Average, 3=Loose)
The area gap around each stairwell door = 0.024 m2
Outside design temperature = 41 deg C
Stairwell temperature = 25 deg C

Stairwell door width = 1.8 m

Stairwell door height = 2.1 m
Force to overcome door closer = 53 N
Distance from door knob to
edge of knob side of door = 75 mm

2. Assumptions:
The pressure difference between stairwell
and building at stairwell bottom = 20 Pa
.
Critical Velocity = 1.524 m/s

4. Height Limit Check:

Maximum allowable pressure difference

between the stairwell and the building = 40.56 Pa Eq (11) ASHRAE Application HB 1999, Ch.51

Height limit below which satisfactory

pressuriation is possible = 54.0 m

5. Calculations:
Abo Flow area between the building and outside per floor = 0.088 m2
Asb Flow area between stairwell and the building per floor = 0.033 m2

B Pressure difference per height due to stack effect = 0.592 Pa/m

Eq (1) ASHRAE Application HB 1999, Ch.51
Psb Pressure difference between stairwell top and the building = 32.47 Pa
Eq (17) ASHRAE Application HB 1999, Ch.51
5.a Simple stairwell pressurization:
Q Flow rate of the pressurization air = 0.845437 m3/s (= 1791 cfm)
Eq (18) ASHRAE Application HB 1999, Ch.51
5.b Canadian stairwell pressurization:

In this system, an exterior stairwell door opens automatically uopn system activation. In addition, the lower
three floors will be considered opened, while the others doors will be considered closed.

I. Opened doors section:

Pressure difference at the bottom of the section = 20.00 Pa
Pressure difference at the top of the section = 24.16 Pa
Flow factor = 3.94 m/s
Open stairwell flow area = 1.54 m2
Effective flow area = 0.09 m2
Flow rate from this section = 1.04 m3/s (= 2204.226 cfm)

II. Closed doors section:

Pressure difference at the bottom of the section = 27.51 Pa
Pressure difference at the top of the section = 36.98 Pa
Flow factor = 4.76 m/s
Effective flow area = 0.03 m2
Flow rate from this section = 0.47 m3/s (= 994.5356 cfm)

III. Exterior stairwell door:

Pressure difference at the exterior door
(~ at 1.5m height) = 23.67 Pa
Open exterior stairwell door effective flow area = 1.54 m2
Flow rate from this section = 7.68 m3/s (= 16262.85 cfm)

The total flow needed to pressurize the stairwell

at the above conditions is the sum of these three
separate flows = 1.04 + 0.469369 + 7.675211
= 9.18 m3/s
(= 19461.61 cfm)
