WHAT IS IT
Compound words are words formed by putting two or more words together
to form a new word with a new meaning. To understand the meaning of the
compound word, it is important to determine the meaning of each word that makes
up the new word.

Example:

+ =

https://bit.ly/2XhZv8Y https://bit.ly/30ojvJ3 https://bit.ly/2PiwFAT

ice berg iceberg

meaning: solid meaning: mountain of meaning: floating ice that
state of water glacier has separated from glacier

However, there are times that the meaning of each word does not lead to the
right definition of the compound word.

4
Example:

+ =

https://bit.ly/3k2J6Pr https://bit.ly/39QWO3t https://bit.ly/31aRofD

hot dog hot dog

meaning: having a meaning: a highly meaning: a long, tube-
relatively high domestic mammal shaped, cooked sausage
temperature closely related to gray usually eating in a long roll
wolf

To understand the meaning of the compound word, we can use context clues,
like synonyms, antonyms and other word parts that may serve as the definition of the
word.

Examples:
1. You got a new timepiece which is like my two-year-old wristwatch.
The compound word in the sentence above is “timepiece”. The meaning of
this word can be found in the sentence itself, that is “wristwatch”. If you observe,
the word “wristwatch” is a synonym of the word “timepiece”.

2. I bought this heavy-duty bag because it can withstand under long use.
The compound word in the sentence is “heavy-duty”. The meaning of this
word is “can withstand under long use”. The definition is found within the
sentence. This means that we can use other word parts in the sentence to get the
meaning of the compound word.

Types of Compound Words

1. Closed compound words are those that are combined as one word.
Examples:
iceberg, someone, seaplane, newspaper, grandmother

2. Open or Separated compound words are those that are not combined as one
word but are still taken as one unit.
Examples:
guest house, shopping complex, electric fan, time zone, golden rule

5

hyphen ( - ).
