DESIGNING A PRODUCT OUT OF LOCAL,

RECYCLABLE SOLID AND/OR LIQUID

MATERIALS IN MAKING USEFUL PRODUCTS
(Part 1)
for SCIENCE 5
QUARTER 1/ WEEK 7
FOREWORD

The Self- learning Kit will serve as a guide to our beloved Grade 5
learners in developing their skills most particularly in designing
product out of local recyclable materials available in their
community. Making this waste into useful product not just for
themselves but also to the people around them. In addition, this
essential skill that they will learn will equip our learners with very
nurturing values that is love for our environment.

The different activities prepared for this competency aims to

develop their knowledge in the specific skill based on the most
essential learning competency in Science 5 which will be very
useful for them in their daily lives.

This Self- Learning Kit is divided in three parts:

What Happened? (Agham- Balikan Challenge) in this part the l

Learners will review the past lesson by answering the different
activities tailored for them based on the MELCS.

What I need to Know? (Agham- Kaalaman) wherein this part

of the SLK the learning competency is being discuss or
explained using examples, illustrations.

What I have Learned? (AghaMatalino Challenge) measures

the learners’ level of mastery in the designing product out of
local recyclable solid and/ or liquid materials into useful
products.
OBJECTIVES:
K Classify materials that can be reduce, reuse and recycle
S Identify recyclable materials that can be reduce, reuse,
recycle
A Work diligently on the different activities

LEARNING COMPTENCIES:

Design a product out of local, recyclable solid or liquid materials

in making useful product (S5MT-Ieg-3)

I. WHAT HAPPENED “Yes, you right my little

brother. I am Mariel, your
partner in learning while
having fun. I will help you in
“High five dearest Grade 5
this lesson about identifying
learners, I am Michael your
recyclable materials. So, what
new best friend who will
help you in classifying are we waiting for, let’s begin
materials that can be the journey towards learning
reduce, reuse and recycle.” while in quarantine.”

1
PRE-ACTIVITIES/Review:

AGHAM- BALIKAN Challenge

1. Sci-Identify – Copy the table in your notebook. Group the

materials listed in the box as to useful and cannot be used
again.

Useful Cannot be used again

plastic drinking bottle toilet paper

juice wrappers paper towels
old newspapers/magazines styrofoam
softdrink cans plastic bags
scrap papers pesticides

2
II. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

AGHAM- KAALAMAN

DISCUSSION:

You already know how to recognize useful and harmful materials.

Now you can apply what you learn in the management of waste at
home.

Today you will also learn the other ways of waste management
through the 3R’s.

REDUCE

To reduce simply means lessen the use of unnecessary materials.

This can be done by using less materials that are readily disposable
either biodegradable or non- biodegradable.

You can do the following:

1. Buy rechargeable batteries instead of disposable batteries for

gadgets.

3
2. Buy products in bigger packs than those packed in small
sachets.

REUSE

To reuse means to use again or find other ways to use a material

1. Use reusable containers when packing, storing food or

drinks, and even when buying drinks.

4
2. Donate clothes and other useful materials to some
organizations that conduct relief operations during
calamities.

RECYCLE

To recycle means, create a new product using a material that

has already served its purpose. Recycling is different from reusing.
Recycling produces a new material out of discarded ones, while
reusing uses the same material again, for the same purpose.

5
III. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

AGHAMATALINO Challenge

EVALUATION/POST TEST:

AGHAMatalino Challenge # 1
Directions: Think of any useful products that can be made from
the following recyclable materials. List as many as you can or each
item. Copy the table in your notebook.
Materials Useful Product of the recyclable materials
1. old calendar
2. scratch paper
3. plastic spoon
4. coconut leaves
5. empty milk box

AGHAMatalino Challenge # 2
Given are some of the waste materials in our surroundings.
Directions: Copy and classify each material in their proper column.
Do this in your notebook.
Plastic bottle Tissue papers Old magazines Styrofoam
Candy wrappers Plastic bags Tin cans Paper plates
Card boards Insecticides Aerosol sprays Glass bottle

Reduce Reuse Recycle

6
AGHAMatalino Challenge # 3
Directions: Tell whether each of the following situation is
an action that shows how to Reduce, Reuse or Recycle. Write
your answer in your notebook.

_________1. The Grade 5 pupils of Mr. Alcoriza make use of old

newspaper in making ornaments out of papier
mache.
_________2. Every time we go for shopping, my mother always
buys products in bigger packs than those in small
sachets.
_________3. During the lockdown many people make use of
their time in planting, using empty plastic bottles.

SYNOPSIS ANSWERS KEY
This Self- Learning Kit aims to discuss the lesson
in Science Grade 5 as part of the most essential
learning competency which is to design a
product out of local, recyclable solid/ or liquid
materials in making useful product.

The leaners are expected to come up with their

own local made recyclable materials using their
creativity and ingenuity with the help of their
beloved parents while they are at home.

So, join us in learning how to design a product

out of local, recyclable materials into useful
ones, while enjoying your stay at your homes.
