Effective Paragraphs!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for guided
and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process the contents of
the learning resource while being an active learner.

iii
What I Need to Know

This module will assist you in encouraging the learners to share their personal
experiences, feelings and emotions in composing effective paragraphs.
Please help the learners in sharing their ideas and knowledge from their experiences
so that there will be collaboration and learning will be easy.
Answers are written at the back of this module. Inculcate to the learners the value of
honesty while answering this module.
For the learner
Paragraph writing is an essential skill. Some may know it already by instinct, while
others need additional support. A well-structured paragraph is the foundation of great writing.
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
1. define a paragraph;
2. identify the three key parts of a paragraph;
3. recognize the qualities of an effective paragraph; and
4. compose effective paragraphs.

What I Know
Identify the letter of the correct answer. Write the letter of the correct answers on your
answer sheet.
1. Supporting sentences are NOT used to:
A. start a new paragraph
B. support the topic sentence
C. focus on the main idea in a paragraph
D. include facts and details and examples that support the topic
2. What are the main parts of a paragraph?
A. Topic Sentence, Outline, Summary
B. Supporting Details, Outline, Thesis Statement
C. Topic Sentence, Thesis Statement, Concluding Paragraph
D. Topic Sentence, Supporting Details, and Concluding Paragraph
3. Which statement about paragraph is NOT True?
A. A paragraph is a group of sentences organized around a central topic.
B. Paragraphs are comprised of sentences, but not random sentences.
C. The cardinal rule of paragraph writing is not to focus on one idea.
D. Good paragraphs are made up of a series of good sentences.

1
4. Which is NOT a quality of an effective paragraph
A. Coherence C. Order
B. Factual D. Unity
5. People do it everyday. They log on to their favorite website and browse for hours,
checking out bargains. They dump every possible wish into their shopping carts, knowing
they can cast each one aside before they finalize their purchases. On the way, they may
enter a sweepstakes in the hopes of winning a trip to Boracay Island, or maybe even a
new SUV. And then, when they have decided on their purchases, they enter private
information without giving it a thought. With a keystroke, they release their personal data
into what may or may not be a secure zone. Despite what much of the public believes,
internet shopping is not safe.
What is the topic sentence?
A. People do it everyday.
B. Despite what much of the public believes, internet shopping is not safe.
C. They log on to their favorite website and browse for hours, checking out bargains.
D. With a keystroke, they release their personal data into what may or may not be a

Lesson
Composing Effective
1 Paragraph
A paragraph should be unified, coherent, and well developed. Paragraphs are unified
around a main point and all sentences in the paragraph should clearly relate to that point in
some way. The paragraph's main idea should be supported with specific information that
develops or discusses the main idea in greater detail.

What’s In

A. Read the following sentences about synthesizing information. Write the letter of your
answer on your answer sheet.

1. Which of the following is not considered when synthesizing sources?

A. Cite your sources. C. Carefully formulate your thesis.
B. Support your evidence. D. Summarize gathered information.
2. What is synthesizing written information?

3
5. Which of these statements is not true about synthesizing?
A. Primary and secondary sources must support main ideas and supporting details.
B. You are usually expected to rely on a single source and come up with your own point
of view.
C. Sources should be blended within your paper and quotations should never just be
dropped in a text.
D. Construct the body paragraphs by acknowledging different sources and highlights
where you can draw other conclusions.

Notes to the Teacher

The teacher must consider the prerequisite skills needed in the
development of this competency including the schema or background
knowledge which may reinforce learning. This module will help the

spiral progression.

What’s New

Read the short passage below. Then, answer the questions that follow. Write your answers on
your answer sheet.
The Wright Brothers
When you hear a plane fly overhead, it may not seem like a big deal, but just over 100
years ago, airplanes were a novel idea.
Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867. On August 19, 1871, his little brother
Orville Wright was born. The pair paved the way for human flight.
When the two boys were young, their father brought home a toy “helicopter” for
Orville and Wilbur. The foot-long toy was made of paper bamboo, cork, and a rubber band.
When the toy broke, Wilbur and Orville built their own. Building the toy interested them in
flying.
The two boys opened a bicycle shop in 1892, but still remained interested in aviation.
Wilbur began creating plans based on observations of birds and the work of other scientists.
The Wright Brothers began testing their theories about flight with kites. Finally, the brothers

4
traveled from Ohio to Kitty Hawk Carolina because the wind would be perfect for testing
their new glider. On December 17, 1903, Orville piloted the Wright Flyer to the world‟s first
controlled, powered human flight. Orville and Wilbur Wright proved that humans could fly in
airplanes!

Comprehension Questions:
1. Who piloted the first successful flight?
2. What spurred the Wright‟s interest in flight?
3. Where did they test their new glider?
4. Why did they take the glider to the Kitty Hawk?
5. How did Wilbur get ideas for his plans?
6. What was the significance of the Wright Brothers inventions especially in the field of
transportation?
7. How did the author develop the topic?
8. What supporting details were used to develop it?

What Is It

What is a paragraph?
Paragraphs are composed of sentences, but not random sentences. A paragraph is a
group of sentences organized around a central topic. In fact, the cardinal rule of paragraph
writing is to focus on one idea. A solidly written paragraph takes its readers on a clear path,
Master the paragraph, and you‟ll be on your way to writing “gold-star” essays, term papers,
and stories.
Good paragraphs are made up of a series of good sentences. Paragraphs also provide
structure and flow to your text. In addition to that, effective paragraphs are not only unified,
they are fully developed, which means that they don‟t leave any insignificant questions in
readers‟ minds.
Parts of a Paragraph
A basic paragraph structure usually consists of five sentences or more. The topic
sentence, three supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence.
1. Topic Sentence
The topic sentence is often the first sentence in a paragraph. It introduces the main
idea. A good topic sentence summarizes the main idea of the paragraph. This informs the
reader what the paragraph will be about. However, the topic sentence may also be found at
the middle where it functions as a transition sentence or at the end of the paragraphs where it
summarizes the previous details

5
Example:
Parents can help their children be successful in school by encouraging them. Since
children usually enjoy playing games instead of studying their boring lessons, parents have to
take responsibility to monitor their study and to remind them to do their homework at home
after school. Parents should also encourage their children to study by buying story books with
pictures, or they can buy textbooks or videos that help children learn to spell or read. But the
best way to encourage children to study efficiently is it to reward them when they get an “A.”
As a child, I experienced this. My parents gave me gift if I had studied well. I was very
excited. So, if parents really want their children to succeed in school, they need to pay
attention to their children‟s studies and encourage them.
https://www.slideshare.net/sushantan94/topic-sentence-supporting-details
2. Body or Supporting Details/ Sentences
Supporting details come after the topic sentence, making up the body of a paragraph.
They give details to develop and support the main idea of the paragraph. They should give
supporting facts, details, and examples.
3. Conclusion or Closing Sentence
The closing sentence is the last sentence in a paragraph. It restates the main idea of
your paragraph. In writing conclusions, restate the main idea of the paragraph using different
words.

In order to write a good paragraph, students need to understand the four essential
elements of paragraph writing and how each element contributes to the whole. But the secrets
to paragraph writing lay in four essential elements, which when used correctly, can make an
okay paragraph into a great paragraph. The four elements essential to good paragraph writing
are: unity, order, coherence, and completeness.

Four Elements of an Effective Paragraph

1. Unity
Unity is the most important characteristic of a good paragraph. It defines that all
sentences in a paragraph should speak about one single idea or one main subject. Unity in a
paragraph begins with the topic sentence. Every paragraph has one single, controlling idea
that is expressed in its topic sentence, which is typically the first sentence of the paragraph. A
paragraph is unified around this main idea, with the supporting sentences providing detail and
discussion. In order to write a good topic sentence, think about your theme and all the points
you want to make. Decide which point drives the rest, and then write it as your topic
sentence.

7
Example:
For my family, Sunday is undoubtedly the best day of the week. We get home from
church around 12:30. After a late lunch the day seems to stretch before us unendingly.
Usually, my brothers and I leaf through the extra-thick Sunday paper (with full-color
comics!) for a while, and then postpone our homework, choosing to nap or go for a ride
instead. Occasionally, there‟s an old movie worth watching on television, or at least a golf
tournament, which my dad snores through on the recliner in our warm living room. And, of
course, it‟s always nice just to sit in the shade with a Coke or lemonade while the afternoon
floats by.
As shown in the sample paragraph, all supporting details work together to develop the
topic sentence.
2. Order
Order refers to the way you organize your supporting sentences. Whether you choose
chronological order, order of importance, or another logical presentation of detail, a solid
paragraph always has a definite organization. In a well-ordered paragraph, the reader follows
along easily, aided by the pattern you‟ve established. Order helps the reader grasp your
meaning and avoid confusion.
Evidently, in the given model paragraph above, order is achieved through the use of
chronological sequence of ideas.
3. Coherence
Coherence is the quality that makes your writing understandable. Sentences within a
paragraph need to connect to each other and work together as a whole. One of the best ways
to achieve coherency is to use transition words. These words create bridges from one
sentence to the next. You can use transition words that show order (first, second, third);
spatial relationships (above, below) or logic (furthermore, in addition, in fact). Also, in
writing a paragraph, using a consistent verb tense and point of view are important ingredients
for coherency.
And, of
course, it‟s always nice just to sit in the shade with a Coke or lemonade while the afternoon
floats by.
In the given paragraph under unity coherence was achieved through the use of
transition words like after, usually, and occasionally.

8
4. Completeness
Completeness means a paragraph is well-developed. If all sentences clearly and
sufficiently support the main idea, then your paragraph is complete. If there are not enough
sentences or enough information to prove your thesis, then the paragraph is incomplete.
Usually three supporting sentences, in addition to a topic sentence and concluding sentence,
are needed for a paragraph to be complete. The concluding sentence or last sentence of the
paragraph should summarize your main idea by reinforcing your topic sentence.

Independent Assessment 2
Read and analyze the following passage. Then answer the questions that follow. Write your
answers on your answer sheet.
Everyone should be required to take a course in first aid. For example, the need to
administer artificial respiration may arise when a friend or relative drowns in the lake at a
school celebration or a family picnic. Or, for instance, a buddy might fracture an ankle or be
bitten by a rattlesnake on a camping trip, requiring help. Also, it is often helpful to know how
to treat a burn from a gas stove or a smoldering fireplace since such injuries occur frequently.
Moreover, it is common to become involved in an auto accident with passengers suffering
from shock; clearly, the injured would benefit from quick, simple medical assistance.
Nevertheless, very few people take the time to learn the simple rules of first aid. As a result,
many people, injured or ill, endure more pain than necessary. Therefore, everyone should
take a first aid course.
