INTERPRETATION
CONTEXT:
‘Michael in the Bathroom’ is a song of Be More Chill starring George Salazar (Michael)
who felt alone during a party with his friend. The whole time, he hid inside a bathroom
thinking that he should’ve just stayed at home instead of attending a party where he does
not belong. He wanted the time to pass by so fast so that the party will come to an end and
he’ll be able to come out and just go home. There is regret on his part for coming to that
party but as the song goes by, I can say that there is acceptance in his part that a present
situation can somehow be different from the past.
TEXTUAL EVIDENCE:
The textual evidence in this song is that Michael faces the life challenge of being alone, out
and unaccepted. We can notice this on the following lines of the song:
I could stay right here or disappear, and nobody'd even notice at all
I'm a creeper in a bathroom 'cause my buddy kinda left me alone
But I'd rather fake pee than stand awkwardly, or pretend to check a text on my phone

Based on the lyrics, it is clear that Michael feels out of place during the party so he’d
rather stay inside the bathroom since no one is there to join or accompany him and no
one will ever notice if he’s still present in the party or not.
In here, it is directly stated that Michael is in the bathroom by himself and is solo in all the
thoughts that wander in his mind. Not feeling that sense of belongingness makes him feel
the grief of staying inside a place where he is actually out.

This song is basically intended to open up the minds of the listeners that teenagers
(mostly but not limited to) that there will come a time that we may feel out of place,
looking for attention and sense of belongingness but we still have ourselves. We still got
the courage to overcome the things that we fear through the most possible way we may
think of. We must love ourselves and never rely our happiness to others. We still have a
long way to go rather than pleasing others just for the trend of being ‘in’ always.
