CURRENT TRENDS AND ISSUES IN NURSING EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION

A profession is a dynamic integration of various faculties of knowledge. Since nursing education


is a professional education, it is dynamic by its own nature and thereby giving rise to trends. Let
us see some of the current trends in nursing education

CURRENT TRENDS IN NURSING EDUCATION

The changes that are occurring in the social and cultural life of the society as a result of the
impact of advancements in the science based technology are broadly described as modernization.
Modernization has paved the way for the emergence of many trends and issues in the field of
education. The trends and issues pertaining to education are immense.

1. Paedocentric: Students are the primary focus on education nowadays. The interest is shifted
from subject matter to child. The subject matter is not the focus butt the education system
focuses mainly on the student’s needs. Over all development of the child is given importance
than the content ara of teaching.
2. Teacher’s role: The role of a teacher was giving instructions in the form of words and acted
as a dictator. Now the role has taken its position as a friend rather than a dictator. Teachers of
today are considered as a facilitator of learning, who prepares students to actively participate
in teaching learning process rather than spoon feeding or cramming.
3. Activity centered: Unlike in the past, education is activity centered. Learning by doing is
given more emphasizing. Lessons to be learned are replaced by performing tasks to achieve
the goals.
4. Creative education: Creativity enhancement is the most important trend in classrooms.
Creative education is a good medium to develop original thought and intervention.
5. More community participation: Education is seeking more community participation for
solving its problems. The presence of parent-teacher association is a classic example for
community participation in education.
6. More reliance on technology: Technology exerts influence on education as a tool for
teaching and learning. Judicious use of educational psychology in the development and
practice of educational technology has increased its user friendly nature considerably.
7. Increased acceptance of non formal type of education: study centers and regional centers
for non formal education have started in many parts of the world as a part increasing need for
education. Distance education and correspondence education have took a special position
among youth.
8. Restructing traditional programme: In order to meet the emerging challenges of
globalization, the traditional education programmes are getting restructured in the form of
more acceptable type of education. For instance, Traditional BSc Botany subject got
restructures to Applied botany in many universities.
9. Increased opportunities for higher studies: A Large number of colleges and course that
give a promising career for the students are starting nowadays in many parts of the world.
The option for higher studies also is increasing as a major trend in this world.
10. Methods of appraisal: The evaluation system has changed from merely assessment of
cognitive skills to assessment on other abilities integrated with cognitive abilities.
11. Innovations in teaching and learning: Innovations like laptop, LCD etc improved the
quality of education in classrooms which will pave way for he overall development of a
student.
12. Educational Quality assurance: Educational quality assurance is a process for monitoring
and evaluating efficiency and effectiveness of educational provision and to institute remedial
measures as and when needed. In India, education is flourishing in an unprecedented manner,
naturally this will lead t dilution in the quality of education in the absence of proper quality
control measures.
13. Emergence of individual as a teaching unit: Each and every individual is unique. Teachers
have started to realize the abilities of individual students and have started to give care based
on individual difference and view individual student as a single unit. The concept of
classroom as a whole is disappearing.
14. Commercialization of education and presence of foreign universities: As the number of
people getting education is less in our country. Government started undertaking specific
programmes for students and integrating non- governmental organizations for enhancing
education. In addition, a lot of foreign universities are attracting students to have specialized
education for the students.

ISSUES IN NURSING EDUCATION

1. Curriculum changes: Flexible curriculum designs are evolving to facilitate diversity of


educational opportunity and overcome barriers of distance and time. These curricula are
often competency based, focused on outcome and emphasize student participation and
responsibility for learning.
2. Innovations in teaching and learning: In nursing education, lot of innovations is taking
place in the areas of teaching and learning. Invariably, these innovations lead to
intellectual development, personal development and career development.
3. Educational quality assurance : Educational quality assurance is a process for
monitoring and evaluating efficiency and effectiveness of educational provision and to
institute remedial measures as and when needed. In India, nursing education is
flourishing in an unprecedented manner; naturally this will lead to dilution in the quality
of nursing education in the absence of proper quality control measures.
4. More reliance on technology: Technology exerts influence on nursing education as a
tool for teaching and learning. Judicious use of educational psychology in the
development and practice of educational technology has increased its user friendly nature
considerably.
5. Emphasis on high tech touch approach: High tech touch approach in nursing care was
devised to preserve the human component of nursing care without undermining the
advantages of technological advancements in the field of patient care. Present day
nursing education is preparing the students to maintain the human element of nursing
while caring the patients with the help of sophisticated gadgets.
6. Preparation of global nurses: Nursing education is all set reap benefits created by
globalization and liberalization by way of preparing students with a global perspective
through providing learning experiences to enrich student’s knowledge in English along
with the attainment of objectives.
7. Transnational acceptance: Nursing educational programmes in one nation is widely
accepted by other nations. In fact, this transnational acceptance is the main reason for the
development of nursing education in countries like india.
8. Ensuring a promising career: Unlike many other professional educationprogrammes,
nursing education ensures a promising career either nib India or abroad. A study
conducted by Johnson and Johnson reveals that nursing education will maintain this
status for at least for the coming 20 years.
9. Emergence of new specialties: In par with the developments in the medical and allied
fields, nursing education is also offering new specialties to meet the needs of the
community.
10. Increased opportunities for higher studies: Different from the past many institutions
are offering programmes such as post- certificate BSc nursing, MSc nursing, Mphil, Phd.
An eligible candidate can easily purse higher education without much time lag.
