“WHOEVER WANTS TO SEE THE RAINBOW MUST
LEARN TO ENJOY THE RAIN” (PAULO COELHO)
According to ESP (English for specific purposes) in teaching students whose language is
not English but we need it for a particular purpose such as: work or study.
We are in this English career mainly because we like this language and it is also a way to
acquire a good job, it is also a very important language that gives us many advantages in
different areas of our lives, for example to travel, do business and acquire friends from
other countries. Our experience in acquiring this language in general has been good, we
have met very kind people starting with our teachers who have been very patient with us in
this process, it has not been easy, there are times when we have been emotionally down
because we did not understand some topic but there are always our teachers, classmates and
family members who believe in us and encourage us to move on, it has been very satisfying
to see how much we have progressed, although we also know that there are many things to
improve but for that we are here to learn and improve. Our performance in the four main
English skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in some has been good and in
others perhaps regular writing and reading has been good but listening and speaking has
cost us more work but with practice and perseverance It is something that we have
improved a lot and we continue in constant progress, it is very important to learn this
language because we can acquire a good job, make trips to countries that we like and

nothing more satisfactory than being able to speak and understand each other with the
people of that country that we visit , It is also an excellent language to conduct business and
meet people from another country for this and many more reasons to make our way of
learning English more fun we use different activities to improve our learning we watch
movies with subtitles in this language to improve our pronunciation and learn structures
grammar, we listen to music, we listen to our teachers and we also practice with our
colleagues we try to speak for as long as possible in this language these are activities that
we like to do in English and they are also fun. There are various subjects which we would
like to learn in English because there are many articles, magazines and research with
innovative news found in this language, for example we would like to learn about
technology, medicine, entertainment, cinema and culture to carry out so many projects that
we have in mind, we practice English for two or more hours a day, this important language
is used mainly in class to communicate with the teacher or with our classmates, but we also
use it to communicate with friends and to search for information online. Our context has
influenced our learning in the motivation we have received from our family, friends and
teachers, people who motivate us to be constant in our learning process, who believe in our
abilities and show us that we are capable of learning this language and be successful in the
way we are going to do it.
INTRODUCTION
Description of context:
“WHOEVER WANTS TO SEE THE RAINBOW MUST
LEARN TO ENJOY THE RAIN” (PAULO COELHO)
The University of Córdoba is located at Carrera 6 # No. 77-305, Montería was founded in
1962 in Montería, Córdoba, Colombia, by a group of visionary professionals who saw the
great potential of the region. Originally, the idea of creating an institution that allowed the
youth of the department to enter higher education came from Doctor Elías Bechara Zainúm,
who was elected as the first rector of Alma Mater two years after its foundation. The
university began academic activities in 1964, enrolling a total of 101 students, 50 for the
Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and 51 for the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and
Zootechnics, of which 65 passed entrance exams and interviews.
Regarding the degree in English, which is the focus of these analyzes, the graduate in
Foreign Languages with an Emphasis in English demonstrates mastery of pedagogical
knowledge and English as a second language in the exercise of his profession, with holistic
and investigative training aimed at autonomously responding to the problems of his
environment and his needs for permanent training, with a high sense of belonging to his
profession, his work context and society. In specific terms, the English graduate may
assume roles such as:
• English teacher for the different levels and training needs of the Colombian educational
system.
The Bachelor Program in Foreign Languages with an emphasis on English began its work
in July 1998; In other words, it is a relatively young program with 17 years of existence
training teachers for the teaching of English as a foreign language and since the year in
question it has been recognized by the ICFES for university training. It received Quality
Accreditation for 6 years on September 6, 2010 according to resolution 7733, with a
renewed qualified registration, according to resolution 12649 of 2010 of the Ministry of
National Education.
For the University of Córdoba, the Bachelor's Program in Foreign Languages with an
emphasis on English is the standard bearer in foreign language education, it constitutes the
bastion of the university's activities and projections, it has a large number of graduates
taking part of the teaching staff with the highest number of affiliates at the University of
Córdoba, in addition to the Language Center of this institution (75 in the Bachelor's degree
and different programs of the University and approximately 70 in the English Center). The
graduates of the program in general are recognized in the local, national and international
environment as suitable teachers in the use of the language and for their pedagogical skills
that have allowed them to have access to national plants, always occupying the first places
in the competitions public of merits.
The English language has become an important language for all kinds of goals, whether
professional, personal or both at the same time. The English language allows us to see the

importance it has to achieve fluency and change the lives of those who speak it. As a main
point, it helps to pursue and obtain job opportunities, it is necessary to know how to speak
and especially to master this language in order to dominate the global market. It also helps
to achieve high percentages of entering university centers, understanding social networks
much easier, makes our mind entertain and reaches high levels of IQ.
In the way of using the language, the teacher has as a fundamental role to facilitate learning
and adopt its methodologies to encourage experimentation, also to facilitate autonomy and
flexibility; This helps the student to take responsibility in their own teaching and learning
process. Another way in which the teacher can fulfill this function is to lead the processes
that are related to the proper planning, implementation and a detailed evaluation of various
items for language teaching.
- LISTEN: The ability to listen is one of the most important in these four contents, this
allows the person who wants to learn to speak, write, master the English language to
receive it and learn it. It is the first skill that the human being receives when it comes to
languages and thanks to this, the person manages to have an easy learning in the correct
way.
- READING: Despite not being a highly developed skill, this is extremely important, as it
helps in the linguistic process and allows knowing how they are structured.
“WHOEVER WANTS TO SEE THE RAINBOW MUST
LEARN TO ENJOY THE RAIN” (PAULO COELHO)
- WRITING: It is the most difficult of the skills to develop fluency in the English language.
In order to be mastered, it must be allied under a strict repertoire of knowledge: vocabulary,
punctuation and grammar.
This language is intended for students and teachers to speak it among themselves and form
an interactive communication, which helps to develop many senses, especially that of
speaking and listening, through basic phrases or through simple questions, it can form a
habit where there is greater fluidity.
For students, the language will be essential in their classroom, during class or at certain
times as the situation requires it. As this becomes frequent, there is more opportunity for
this to become frequent in different places and settings, a bilingual meeting where the use
of the English language is required, a business conference, even for entertainment and
learning purposes.
Hutchinson and Waters (1987: 54) make a distinction between these kinds of needs and
learning needs. The latter refer to what students need to do to learn, what is the most
effective way of learning language and skills.
The main reason for students take the English course is because is mandatory or they need
it to get a job but they also notice the expectations as they acquire this language that go
beyond the obligation of learning this language for them it is exciting to be able to

understand the label of a product or a phrase said in a movie and also to be aware that this
language will give them many advantages. In general, they have a good attitude towards
learning this language, sometimes with moments of demotivation due to not understanding
some topics or not knowing how to pronounce a word, but they try to found help and learn.
According to the learning styles exposed by Alonso, Gallego and Honey, the students of
these courses must be active to enjoy new experiences and always have an open mind, they
must be reflective to observe the experiences from different angles to analyze data and
topics in which they need improve, many of them are aware that they must improve their
pronunciation and acquire more vocabulary so as not to fall short when having a
conversation.
CONCLUSION
facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences with other countries whose official
language is different from English, because it allows communication through a common
and widespread language. It also develops a set of knowledge, knowledge, skills and
individual characteristics that allows a person to perform actions in a given context is what
defines the competences. In the case of English, it is expected to develop communicative
competence, including linguistic, pragmatic, sociolinguistic competence. It is important to
emphasize that all these knowledge, skills and abilities develop, exist and are manifested in
a close way because they are closely related to each other. The development of each skill
such as speaking, writing, listening, reading, will allow the student to understand, express,
argue and analyze. Mastery of the four skills will determine whether the understanding of
the language is basic, intermediate, or advanced level.
