The Life of Gregorio ‘Goyo’ Del Pilar (Paulo Avelino) a youngest generals during the
Philippine- American war who fought in the Tirad pass. During the Philippine- American war,
Gregorio Del Pilar led them under President Emilio Aguinaldo and who trusted the most. The
film combines historical fact with fictional elements to serve a narrative theme. The American
soldier forces controlled the Manila, Tarlac, Neuva Eciji, and Pangasinan who under controlled
with Americans. The cinematography was delivered organized and the relevant to the real story,
the theme inside the film was really detailed with creativity and how the audience to convince
that the film was really happened and who fell during the battle for our freedom, our soldiers and
Gregorio Del Pilar was tasked to led the Philippines revolutionary forces against to
Americans, they always chasing peace and freedom for our country and they can sacrifice their
own life and ready to die for the nation. The brigades and soldiers were gathered under the
General Goyo and the President to defend our country and they have a chance to fight back
against the enemy, we chasing the freedom and we fight for it but freedom become still difficult
to achieve. Soldier who died while fighting they left their home to fight for freedom and to save
their lives while the soldiers holding a rifle and they don’t know if they will die or stay alive and
they don’t know if they will return after the war. Chasing freedom and there’s no escape in war
instead of running away and surrender to them, Surrendering is not the way of getting a freedom
you need to fight for it and what is your fighting for. They need to fight, not just for their own
but they are fighting and sacrificing for their own life for the freedom of the motherland. I would
like to prove that we know how to fight with dignity and honor because there’s no more room for
doubting and we need to fight what we want and what we want to achieve. They accept whatever
fate in the name of this love to our country, love the country is one of the important thing need to
fight for.
Goyo is also known as “Agila”, he loved by many especially the ladies, and the people
look up to him. “You are the eagle” A rank of a soldier with a high position but position and rank
doesn’t define who you are as a soldier and general. Because sometimes Goyo chose to sleep
while fighting while his countrymen fell while fighting and President Emilio Aguinaldo
betraying them and running way from the battle, it is a sign that we’re not fighting for our
freedom but we are fighting for ourselves and dignity. In the first place, our real enemy is
ourselves stated by General Luna and after he was killed by President Aguinaldo and they are
right to call us children. Apolinario Mabini said “When a person of low rank has done a small
good deed, we can regard it as noble. But if this small good deed is all that a person of a higher
rank has done, it is negligence. The Revolution failed because it was badly led, instead of
supporting those who have genuinely served the country, Aguinaldo made them useless,” This
statement show that we’re not really fighting for our freedom because of the wrong person brings
us to death, we’re going to die if we always looking at our rank and position. But our death was
honored if we fight for our nation. According to Louise Ferrer (2018), there is a side of Goyo
that Filipinos do not know or have not seen. Underneath all his charm and success lies an internal
struggles, and it just goes to show that in every battle, even the strongest, most idolized heroes
freedom. But we don’t achieve it if we don’t know how to fight a real freedom and never look at
the luxurious life we have. Goyo see himself flying above the sky, flying like an eagle, and eagle
whose never fall down. But General Goyo defined himself as an eagle without a wing and never
flies. But General Goyo was also noble hero, who died fighting against Americans. But the film
defines too many personalities of soldier and leader, a general who spent his time in war, and
died. A leader who teach them who to fight without strategies, a leader who gives orders to fight,
a leader who bring them from death, a leader who sit on chair and watching while his soldier
died at the battle, and a leader who has a honor by their countrymen but pledging to the
American flag.
