Experiment 8

Aim: To prepare crystals of pure copper sulphate from a given impure sample.

Theory: When hot and saturated solution of copper sulphate along with few drops of sulphuric acidis
cooled; we get crystals of pure copper sulphate.

Materials Required: Beaker glass funnel tripod stand. China dish glass rod burner and filter paper.

Procedure:

1 Take about 30 ml of water and add to it the small quantities of impure sample of copper sulphate at a
time.

2. Stir the solution several times till it dissolves completely.

Add few drops of dilute sulphuric acid to make the solution clear.

3. Filtre the solution with the help of filter paper and collect the filterate in china dish. The insoluble
impurities will be left on the filtre paper.

4. Heta the china dish on wire guaze till the crystallization point is reached .

5. Cool the hot saturated solution by keeping it undisturbed.

6. Decant off mother liquor carefully and wash the crystals with water

7. Dry the crystals in the folds of filter paper gently and store them in air tight plastics bags.

Observation

Colour of crystals- blue

Shape of crystals – Triclinic

Amount of crystals formed –

Precautions

1. Ad few drops of dilute sulphuric acid to the solution

2. Do not evaporate the entire solution
3. The filterate is evaporated up to the crystallization point.
4. The solution should be cooled very slowly.

Result: The blue crystals of pure copper sulphate are obtained.
