    Frame meaningful sentences using the given clues to
    answer the following questions.

    I. Answer the following questions after reading the lesson ‘The Three Questions’
    ○ Who is the author of the story “The Three questions”?
    Clues- Leo Tolstoy
    ○ What was the hermit doing when the king came to visit him?
    Clues- ...digging the ground in front of his hut
    ○ “Here comes someone running” – who came running?
    Clues- A bearded man/ stranger….
    ○ What did the wounded man promise the king?
    Clues … that he would serve the king as his most faithful servant.
    ○ Why did the king want to know the answers to the three questions?
    Clues ...because the king thought that he would never fail at anything if he knew the
    answers to his three questions. He believed that knowing
    II. Complete the following sentences by adding the appropriate parts
    of the sentences given in the box.

    ○ Many wise men answered the king’s questions but their answers were so varied that
    the king was not satisfied.
    ○ Someone suggested that there should be a council of wise men to help the king act
    at the right time.
    ○ Someone else suggested that the king should have a timetable and follow it strictly.
    ○ The king requested the hermit to answer three questions..
    ○ The king washed and dressed the bearded man’s wound but the bleeding would not
    stop.

    III. Answer the following questions on the basis of reading of the poem ‘
    Coromandel Fishers’

    1. What does the phrase ‘The leaping wealth of the tide’ refer to?
    Clues- fish

    2. Why is the wind compared to a child?


    Clues- ...the wind after blowing all night has stopped blowing at dawn so it is compared
    with the child who has cried all night and is sleeping calmly in the early morning.

    3. ‘The wind lies asleep in the arms of the dawn’ which figure of speech is used
    in the given line?
    Clues-Personification

    4. Which figure of speech has been used to describe the sea?


    Clues- Metaphor

    5. Why do the fishermen prefer the dangers of the sea to the comfort of the land?
    clues- … the fishermen prefer the adventurous life on the sea rather than the comfort of
    the land and enjoy facing the waves, seeing them dance and feeling the salty spray on
    the face.

    IV. Answer the following questions on the basis of the reading of the poem ‘ Grannie’

    1.When did the speaker feel safe?


    Clues- ...he felt safe with his grandmother and her smile was like a warm shawl, she was a
    protective barrier between the child and all the things that worried and frightened him. She
    gave him a sense of security and a feeling of being loved.

    2.What had happened to the speaker in France?


    Clues- was wounded while fighting in the Second World War...

    3.What did grannie do when the speaker wrote to her and asked her to visit him?
    Clues- ..she came to the hospital to see him
