well destroy the whole port together with some of the surrounding territory. Later, America started
developing an atomic bomb.

Ans. Undoubtedly Einstein was genius. This side of Einstein is known to the world vividly. But
Einstein along with a science genius was not just concerned with his discoveries and inventions, he
also alerted political parties of the destructive side of the science. Learning and pursuing something is
simple but taking its responsibility makes you stand out. After seeing the destruction caused due to
bombing, he started a campaign for peace and democracy. Hence, he is rightly called the world
citizen.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree

Summary
In the poem ‘The Lake Isle of Innisfree’, poet William Butler Yeats pours out his feeling of moving
and settling near the lake isle of Innisfree. He shares his plans of actions he would pursue there. He
would build a small hut of clay and wattles. He would do farming by sowing nine rows of beans for
his consumption. He would carry out apiculture by rearing honey bees and listen to their buzzing. He
would watch the morning Sun unveil from the cloudy sheets and hear the cricket sing. At midnight he
would watch the mesmerizing glimmers of the lake and at noon he would watch it bright and purple.
Though he is away in the city, he deeply wishes to go and settle in the peaceful place of Innisfree.

Poetic Devices-
1. Repetition- I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree
2. Rhyme Scheme-
3. Imagery- Creating mental picture on the minds of readers.
Eg. Veils of the morning, noon a purple glow
4. Alliteration- hive of honeybee
Lake water lapping with low
5. Personification- cricket sings
Veils of the morning
6. Metaphor- clouds are compared to veils

Thinking About the Poem-

Q.2. By now you may have …………
Ans. Innisfree is a serene place with pristine surroundings such as, the water lapping in the lake,
buzzing of honey bee, singing of cricket etc. It’s a place free from pollution and undemanded noise of
the city. The poet wants to relax in the lap of nature after having a long hustle- bustle of city life.

II. 2. Look at these words;

…..peace comes….
Dropping……..
What do these words…………..?
Ans. The above lines describe the rising of Sun from the midnight darkness and dawning with
beautiful sun rays. This experience is cosmic for the poet. He also mention the peace felt in the
singing of crickets amid silence of nature which is accompanied by more beautiful sounds of nature.

GUIDELINES FOR DIARY WRITING

A good diary entry does contain the following features:

1. A good diary writing contains the place, the date, the day and even the time of writing. For
example:
Agra
20th July, 20XX
Friday, 8:00 p.m.
2. A diary doesn’t need any formal heading. However, it is optional. If you want, you can give a
suitable heading.
3. The style and tone are generally informal and personal. However, it depends on the subject.
4. Sometimes the tone can be philosophical and reflective too. You can freely express your viewpoints
and feelings.
5. As the diary is writer’s personal document, the diary entry doesn’t need any signature.

A Practice Question-

While going home you came across many children on the roads at crossroads with begging bowls in
their hands. You are shocked and disgusted at this unflattering picture of a country which boasts of
being a major economy in the world. Record your experience in your diary.

Dear Diary,
They say that India is emerging as a major economy in the world. But it is truer that India has the
largest army of poor people, paupers and beggars. Hence, millions of people in India are condemned
to begging. I am shocked to see hundreds of shabby looking people in rags shouting in woeful tones,
“Baba, give me something for God’s sake”. If millions of children live in such inhuman conditions,
dirt and poverty, it is a matter of shame for the government and the civilized society of India. Every
child must have a constitutional right to get proper food, clothes and education. It is true that begging
has also become a lucrative profession for some bad characters. They kidnap small children and raise
them to beggars. Millions of hands in this country don’t get any jobs to earn a living. They resort to
begging.

Chapter 3 Iswaran the Storyteller

Think About It-

Q.1. In what way is Iswaran an asset to Mahendra?
Ans. Iswaran was a devoted helper of Mahendra. He would accompany Mahendra wherever he was
posted without any compliant. He cooked for Mahendra, washed his clothes, cleaned his
accommodation and entertained him by telling stories in his own captivating style. He would procure
cooking supplies to even desolate places and cook sumptuous dishes out of it. Story telling was his
strong suite and hence Mahendra did not need a television.
In my opinion, it would have been a tedious task for Mahendra to settle at places without Iswaran.

Q.2. How does Iswaran describe……..

Ans. He would say- the road was deserted……….page 13….spread out.
Iswaran would magnify and exaggerate a simple scene to leave a vivid impact on the mind listener
and keep him captivated the story. His stories left imagery on the mind of the listener.
Q.3 How does he narrate………….
Ans. Iswaran would narrate about a tusker that escaped from the timber yard and began to roam
about- the elephant would break fences like matchsticks. It would smash fruit stalls, mud pots and
clothes. Elephant would enter in a school ground and pull out the football goal-post, tear the football
net, flatten the drum and uproot shrubs. When all the teachers would get frightened of the wild beast
and climb up the terrace of the school building, Iswaran as a junior class boy would muster up all his
courage and embark on a strife to chase away the tusker. He would whack its toe nail using a cane that
he grabbed from teachers and the elephant would collapse.
In my opinion, the story does appear plausible as he was too little to face a wild animal when it has
lost his sense.

Q.4 Why does the author say that Iswaran………

Ans. Iswaran’s expertise in telling stories would leave Mahendra captured in the story. Iswaran’s
stories were loaded with suspense and thriller. Along with being a wonderful cook, he would also
cook captivating stories for Mahendra and Mahendra never felt a need of television.

Q.6 Can you think of some other ending for the story?
Ans. Kindly write on your own.
