Q1. Who were the Mughals?


Ans. a) The Mughals were the descendants of two great lineages of rulers.
b) From their mother’s side they were the descendants of Genghis Khan ruler of the
Mongol tribes of China and Central Asia.
c) From their father’s side they the successors of Timur the ruler of Iran, Iraq and modern-
day Turkey.

Q2. How did Babur establish and consolidate the Mughal Empire?
Ans. a) In 1526, he defeated Ibrahim Lodhi and the Afghan supporters at
Panipat.
b) In 1527, he defeated Rana Sanga, a Rajput ruler and allies at Khanua.
c) In 1528, he defeated the Rajput’s at Chanderi and established control over Agra and Delhi
before his death.

Q3. Enumerate Todar Mal’s revenue system.


Ans. a) Akbar’s revenue minister, Todar Mal carried out a careful survey of crop yield, prices
and areas cultivated for a ten years period, 1570 to 1580. On the basis of this data, tax was
fixed on each crop in cash.
b) Each province was divided into revenue circles with its own schedule of revenue rates for
individual crops.
c) This revenue system was known as zabt.

Q4. Why is Sultan Suleyman of Turkey’s reign called ‘a period of ideal governance’?
Ans. a) During Sultan Suleyman’s rule the Ottoman state expanded into Europe, seizing
Hungary and besieging Austria. Much of North Africa, all the way into Morocco,
acknowledged Ottoman authority.
b) The monarch was given the title of “Al Qanuni” (the lawgiver) because of the large
number of regulations (qanun) passed during his reign.
c) He made law to protect the peasantry from forced labour and extraordinary taxes. So,
the reign of Sultan Suleyman was remembered as a period of ideal governance.

Q5. Who wrote Akbar Nama? What does the book contain? Explain.
Ans. a) Abul Fazal wrote ‘Akbar Nama’, a three –volume history of Akbar’s reign.
b) The first volume dealt with Akbar’s ancestors and the second volume recorded the
events of Akbar’s reign.
c) The third volume is the Ain-i-Akbari. It deals with Akbar’s administration, household,
army, the revenues and the geography of his empire.
d) It also provides rich details about the traditions and culture of the people living in India.
e) The most interesting aspect about the Ain-i-Akbari is its rich statistical details about
things like- crop yield, prices, wages and revenue.
Q6. What is Mansabdari system? Explain.
Ans. a) The term mansabdar, refers to an individual who holds a mansab, meaning a
position or rank.
b) It was a grading system used by the Mughals to fix the rank, salary and military
responsibilities.
c) Rank and salary were determined by a numerical value called zat. The higher the zat, the
more prestigious was the noble’s position in court and the larger his salary.
d) The mansabdar’s military responsibilities required him to maintain a specified number of
sawar or cavalry men.
e) The mansabdar brought his cavalry men for review, got them registered, their horses
branded and then received money to pay them as salary.

Q7. How was the idea of ‘Sulh-i-kul’ formed by Akbar?


Ans. a) Akbar started discussions on religion with the Ulama, Brahmanas, Jesuit priests who
were Roman Catholics and Zoroastrians.
b) These discussions took place in the Ibadat Khana. He was interested in the religion and
the social customs of different people.
c) Akbar’s interaction with the people of different faiths made him realize that religious
scholars who emphasized ritual and dogma were often bigots.
d) This eventually led Akbar to the idea of ‘Sulh-i-Kul’ or ‘Universal Peace’.
e) This idea of tolerance did not discriminate between people 0f different religions in his
realm.
