E) Specification:
Thanjavur Netti Works (Thanjavur Pith Work) is made from pith. The pith is obtained from Netti, a
hydrophyte plant called as Aeschynomene Aspera. The artisans are skilled in this particular craft
and this art is traditionally and hereditarily transferred from their fore-fathers. The notable works
from Thanjavur Netti Works include models of the Brihadeeshwara Temple, Hindu Idols, Garlands,
door hangings and show pieces used for decoration. The Pith stems, i.e. hydrophytes are found in
and around the Thanjavur region and Mannargudi. The lakes around Pudukottai (Pudukullam &
Kallaperumbur lake) are surrounded with marshy land which favours the growth of the Hydrophytic
plant. The soil found in Thanjavur is favourable for the growth of the plant that is used for the
production of pith handicraft based in Thanjavur.
F) Description:
Thanjavur Netti works in the Thanjavur district (formerly known as Tanjore) is one of the primary
traditional art forms that have been famous all over the world. Thanjavur and Kumbakonam
(including areas in and around) are two towns in this district that have prolific artisans and
craftsmen who excel in this craft of making artifacts out of pit obtained from Hydrophyte family
Aeschynomene Aspera.
Aeschynomene Aspera is an aquatic plant which is considered as a minor weed of rice paddies.
The food stored in the stem of this plant forms the Pith. Pith cells lie at the center of the stem for
the storage of the food. Pith forms the core of the plant that grows in water. The leaf of the
hydrophytic plant looks like the leaf of Indian Gooseberry. The flower is yellow in colour.
They grow on the margins of wetlands, such as lagoons, tanks and lakes as well as in swampy
grassland. It also grows on the river beds in Thanjavur. It is also known as kidachi, Pent, Netti, etc.
with the biological name of' 'Aeschynomene indica' or 'Aeschynomene asperar. These hydrophytes
may also be obtained from small lakes and ponds in the region of Thanjavur.
Good quality pith is pure white in colour with soft surface and no cracks, while poor quality pith is
one with reddish core and a hard bark and has many nodes. They are very light and careful
handling is required. The pith is a very delicate material and highly brittle in nature.
The distinctness of the Pith artifact’s remains in the simplicity of its production. The artifact’s
created out of the pith obtained from the hydrophytic plants looks similar to the ones made in
marble and to the ones made in elephant’s tusk. They shine in a very elegant way. However,
products made from the Pith are brittle and break easily, unless kept carefully. Hence, most models
are preserved inside a glass box.
The Thanjavur Netti Works production is based in the Thanjavur District (majority of production is
done in the towns of Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Pudukkottai) Pudukkottai District in Tamilnadu
Like many other traditional crafts, Thanjavur Netti works had its origin in the ritual and religious
needs of the people. The pith was initially used for making garlands out of slices beautifully cut into
cylindrical and round shapes and then dyed with different colours. Bulls and buffaloes were
garlanded during 'Mattu Pongal', which is celebrated during January or February i.e. during
harvesting season. Mattu Pongal is celebrated very lavishly in the Tanjore region which was one of
the encouraging factors for progress of pith handicrafts.
In addition to this the Netti work is said to have been existed from the Maratha period as stated in
the Tanjore Gazette.
Documented records about Tanjore (as it was then called) gives out 'pith' as an important industry
for making of pith images and garlands, which was carried on by 'Nayudus', 'Marathas' and
'Musalmams' of that region. Record states that business flourished during that time. The pith was
Further, Gazetteer records of 1907 also states that, Pith work as an important industry and its
product was known to be used in 'Mattu Pongal' festival. Hence origins of pith works is an age-old
tradition.
I) Method of Production:
Netti (Pith) is the basis of any of the materials crafted in Thanjavur. It is obtained from the lakes
across Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Mannargudi. Netti is a special variety of pith (waterside weed),
used as raw material for developing the pith models. It is a milky-white, light weight sponge-wood
which is grown in marshy waterlogged areas. The biological name of shola pith is Aeschynomene
aspera.
Indica or Aeschynomene Aspera (bean family) and is an herbaceous plant. Only good quality pith
that is pure white in colour with soft surface and no cracks are used for production, while poor
quality pith with the reddish core and a hard bark (has many nodes) is discarded. The pith is very
light and careful handling is required. The pith is a very delicate material and highly brittle in nature.
The root is boiled, and dried in the sun. It is then cut to size and a pencil drawing is inscribed on it.
A rough carving is followed by the carving of finer details with a blunt chisel and it is polished with
sandpaper finally. The outer brown skin is removed by cutting with the help of a sharp knife. The
inner soft white portion of the stem is used to make the art pieces. The pith locally known as Netti
is cut into fine pieces of different designs and shapes as per the requirement of the product to be
made. For basic carving long knife is used and for detail and minute carving small knife is used.
The carved pieces are assembled together and stuck with adhesive into one piece of art. Blue
prints of the design or photos are used as reference to make the miniatures. It takes one day to
make small figures whereas l0 to 12 days to finish a detailed designed idol. It takes almost a month
to finish set of art piece of a place or temple. Sometimes customers send the reference of the art
piece they want to be made. Some pith works are painted with water colours to make it look
colourful and attractive.
Thanjavur Netti Works is famous for miniature works of Thanjavur temples and idol making. The
finished pith work is generally fixed to a wooden base and covered with glass to protect from dust
and moisture. This helps to preserve the works for years. For normal pieces ply wood made stands
are used as base, whereas for big and important pieces teak and wood stands are used.
Miniatures of rural and urban place are also made, which are decorated with lights. The art pieces
made of pith starts at the range of fifty rupees and goes up to lakh.
Raw Materials: Netti / Sholapith is a variety of weed of hydrophyte plant which is used as raw
materials for developing the artifacts. It is a dried milky white spongy plant material. It is also known
as "kidachi" in Malayalam and "Pent" in Telugu. The biological name of Netti/ Sholapith is
'Aeschynomene indica' or 'Aeschynomene aspera'. The 'netti' is the cortex or core of the plant and
is about 1 ½ inch in diameter. They are very light and expert handling is required. The core is light,
porous. Soft, and pliable and can be shaped to suit the imagination of the artisan. Good quality pith
is pure white and smooth with soft bark and no nodes, wherein poor quality weed is one in which
pith is reddish in colour with hard bark and has many nodes.
There are certain small lakes. Ponds in the region of Thanjavur from wherein hydrophytes maybe
obtained.
Other tools that are used for this handicraft are mentioned below:
• Scissors for sculpting the precise detailing and various combinations.
• Geometry box for precise measurement and details.
• Glass case (it is used to cover the pith artifact).
• Glass cutter (lt is a tool used to make a shallow score in one surface of a piece of glass
that is to be broken in two pieces).
• Silicon carbide combination stone is used for sharpening knives, chisels. plane iron.
blades, etc. and
• Home-made glue/ paste.
J) Uniqueness:
K) Inspection Body:
The artisans traditionally practice the craft under the guidance and instructions of master artisans
which acts like an internal inspection mechanism.
L) Others:
i. The popularity of Netti works of Thanjavur region has resulted in wide customer base.
Products have been bought by customers from Russia, US, Singapore, Germany,
Malaysia and a few more foreign countries.
ii. Thanjavur Pith work is being promoted by, Poompuhar (Tamil Nadu Handicrafts
Development Corporation) a state owned organization. They have various centers
throughout the nation. i.e. in Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Thanjavur, and many
more places in the state of Tamil Nadu. Pith work artisans are encouraged to exhibit their
work in these showrooms so as to attract wider customer base.
iii. Thanjavur Pith works are usually undertaken by families and it is one of the main sources
of income in the region of Thanjavur. They are trained and engaged in this business.
Knowledge and skill is passed traditionally from one generation to another through 'Guru-
Shishya' method.
The Arumbavur wood carvings are primarily made out of the wooden logs of Indian siris (Poo
Vaagai, Albizia lebbeck), Mango (Mangifera indica), Lingam tree (Mavilangam), Indian Ash tree
(Othiyan – Odina wodier), Rose wood, Neem tree (Vembu – Azadirachta indica) are used for
making sculptures. The carvings in Arambavur Wood Carvings are often inspired by architectural
details on temple sculptures and carvings. The dimensions of the wood blocks used depend on the
wooden sculpture to be carved. The descriptions and designs which inspire the work lie in temple
architecture indigenous to the region. Usually, the statues are crafted at a size range from 1 to 12
feet.
The art form also draws inspiration from mythology and mythical deities. Numerous sculptures of
Lord Vinayaka, Goddess Saraswati, Lord Krishna, Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi can be seen in
Arumbavur Wood Carvings, along with auspicious motifs such as hamsa/mythical swans,
poomakhumbhal cornucopia, kaamadhenu, other floral motifs; temple chariots and temple cars
used during processions of deities, figures of Christ, Dasavatara panels, avatars of Goddess
Laksmi and vahanas for temple deities among numerous other designs. Presently, the Arumbavur
wood carvings revolves around idols and deities, temple chariots and temple car, door panels of
house, pooja rooms and temples, decorative figures, pooja mandapam.
F) Description:
The Arumbavur artisans receive an abundant supply of Vengai, Mango, Aththi and Mavilangam
wood because of the high availability of wood in Pachamalai Hills as well as the Thanjavur-
Kumbakonam belt. The presence of these varieties of timber in abundant quantities makes the
region ideal for the wood craft. In specific, if a customer needs the products in Teak (Tectona
grandis) / Rosewood (Eetimaram – Dalbergia sissoo) then, the logs would be given by the
customer itself directly from the Timber Mart.
The Arumbavur artisans employ great skill in measuring geometric proportions and scale of wood
and detailing required, from a single block of wood, for various wooden sculptures; from hand-sized
carvings to temple chariots and temple cars. Temple cars and chariots are used to carry
representations of Hindu gods. The dimensions of the wood blocks used depend on the wooden
sculpture to be carved. The descriptions and designs which inspire the work lie in temple
architecture indigenous to the region.
The Wooden sculptures are classified as two types based on the Structure namely, Full image
statue (A full structure is carved out of the wood) and Bas Relief statue (Lightly carved design over
the surface). Further the Wooden sculptures are classified as seven and more types based on its
Utility. The following are the wooden carvings made by the Arumbavur Artisans:
Among the above said works, temple cars are majorly made by the Arumbavur Artisans. The base
part of temple car is structured into three layers as Earthly life (King, Queen, Dancing girls,
The Vimana of inner sanctum (Garbhagriha) is considered as the purest part of a temple car. This
temple car is classified as many types. “Based on Wheel’s thickness and numbers, temple car is
classified as Full temple car, three-fourths temple car, half temple car by the temple car sthapatis.”
Arumbavur temple car sthapatis crafted more than 400 Temple cars and 5000 temple vahanas for
various temples all over Tamil Nadu and other states of India. The dwelling of maximum number of
Temple car Sthapatis at one single place is the unique feature of Arumbavur. “Temple Car works
means Arumbavur” is the victory for the Arumbavur native artisans’ craftsmanship, hardworking
nature and their contributions to the art.
While other wood carving art forms employ Red Sanders, Teak, Ebony, Madhuca etc., Arumbavur
Wood Carvings employ Mango, Rose Wood, Mavilangam, Vaagai and Aththi, exclusively. While
numerous art forms, today, are adopting industrial methods and machinery into their art forms,
Arumbavur Wood Carving solely relies on traditional instruments such as gouges, chalk, saw,
sandpaper, chisel, tiruppu till, elapp till, sittar uli, aakkur, malu, kottapuli, Kodari etc. for carving
wood into pieces of art. Instead of adopting machinery, the art form has chosen to employ multiple
artisans to work at different stages of carving i.e. sizing the wood, chiseling, carving the patterns
and detail etc.
Arumbavur Wood Carving is done at Arumbavur and around Veppanthattai Taluk of Perambalur
District.

Arumbavur is famous for its wood carving tradition which is of a religious nature and its community
of wood carvers have their origin in Madurai. The artisans (predominantly the Boyar Community)
used to go to the particular place where the temple car has to be made and stay in that temple for
a period of upto four years and complete the work. Then they migrate to another place, where a
new temple car has to be made. Like this, artisans led the nomad life and later a cluster of people
settled in Arumbavur around 250 years ago and did temple cars, other wooden statues, house
utility products, carpentry works.
In 1950s, well trained artisans started their own workshop (“Pattarai”). In addition to the commercial
craft works, they facilitated the training for the new comers. Youngsters from the community
availed this training on their own interest and mastered it. Currently, there are 200 wood carving
artisans’ families are residing at this place. These craftsmen follow the rule of iconography
described in the Shilpa Shastra. The Shilpa Sastra provide detailed instructions on how to fell the
different timber trees, in what seasons and even how to season the timber so as to prevent cracks
and unequal drying. They also lay down prohibitions against using the wood of trees that are struck
down by lightning, storms or knocked down by elephants and floods etc.
I) Method of Production:
Raw Materials:
1. Vaagai / Indian Siris (Albizzia lebbeck): The vaagai tree is a light demander, frost tender, it
has a good natural lustre with a coarse texture. This wood is believed to have special
properties, their leaves fold up at night giving the impression of a sleeping tree. The wood
though soft and pliable, is strong and weathers all conditions. The temple vahanas are
made out of lebbeck.
2. Mavilangai (Crataeva religiosa roxburghii): The Mavilangai tree is a wild or cultivated tree
which occurs on glades and the edge of a forest near rivers and lakes.
3. Aththi (Ficus racemosa):The Aththi tree is a large deciduous tree, grows to a height of 7-10
metres. It has smooth white bark which is best suited for ornamental purpose. The temple
vahanas are also made of aththi.
4. Rosewood (Dalbergia sissoo): The rosewood used for the carvings are strong and heavy,
taking an excellent polish. The colour varies from a golden brown to a deep purplish
brown, with darker brown streaks and have a rose scent.
5. Mango (Mangifera indica): Mango wood is categorized as hardwood because of its
strength, density, attractive looks and of course durability that allows it not to wear out
quickly and keep their high luster texture for many years.
6. Iluppai maram /Mahua (Madhuca longifolia): Mahua is a medium-sized deciduous tree,
which grows to a height of 16-20 m. The crown is rounded with multiple branches. The
bark is grey, vertically cracked and wrinkled, exfoliating in thin scales. Temple cars are
made out of Mahua tree.
7. Teak wood (Tectona grandis): The teak wood is hard wood usually brown in colour with
good grains and texture. Temple cars are also made out of teak wood.
Tools used:
Artisans use variety of tools for the production of wood carvings. List of tools employed is
enumerated as follows:
i. Chisels, Ruler (Uli): Artisans use variety of chisels (3", 2", 1.5", 1.25", 1") for shaping and
crafting the sculpture. They use thulavu uli, aenthal uli, 'SeruvaUli' for carving, 'tiruppuuli'
for turning the screw, 'SitraUli' to carve small idols, 'Ezhuppuuli' to smooth the surface
planer for levelling, 'KeethuUli'for light incisions, 'pattauli' which is a flat, broad chisel,'
dokkuuli’ small chisel and 'Tachchuli' pointed chisel.
ii. Hammers, 'suthiyal'
iii. Measuring Tape, scales
iv. Handsaw. 'vaal': saw also called 'Rambam’’
v. Screw divers
vi. Files
vii. Cutting tools/ cutting pliers
viii. Spanners
ix. Drilling Machine
x. Puffing Machine
xi. Sandpaper
Process of Production:
The dimensions of the wood blocks used by the artisans depend on the wooden sculpture to be
carved. The wood to be carved is seasoned by natural processes such as exposing it to changing
weather conditions. The artisans carve the wood in many stages which include rough carving,
smoothening, sandpapering etc. which are furnished here under:
1. In the first step, the wood is sized and cut as required by the artisans.
2. Subsequently, a layout of the design to be carved is drawn on the cut wood using chalk.
3. The wood is then chiselled along the layout for a roughly-carved wooden sculpture with
finer details.
4. The rough carving is then smoothened with the help of smaller chisels. The finer details
are carved at this stage.
5. The wooden sculpture is then polished with sandpaper for obtaining a smooth finish.
6. The sculptures are then painted with natural colours, with lacquer or given an antique
finish. Enamel paints are also used, at times. Enamel paint is often preceded by a
limestone coating.
J) Uniqueness:
1. While other wood carving art forms employ Red Sanders, Teak, Ebony, Madhuca etc.,
Arumbavur Wood Carvings are especially made out of Vaagai, Mavilangam, Aththi,
Mahua, Mango Tree’s Wood.
2. The Wood Carving is done completely by hand and the immense talent and expertise of
the wood carvers is evident in every figurine made.
3. While numerous art forms, today, are adopting industrial methods and machinery into their
art forms, Arumbavur Wood Carving solely relies on traditional instruments such as
gouges, chalk, saw, sandpaper, chisel, tiruppu till, elapp till, sittar uli, aakkur, malu,
kottapuli, Kodari etc. for carving wood into pieces of art.
4. Instead of adopting machinery, the art form has chosen to employ multiple artisans to work
at different stages of carving i.e. sizing the wood, chiseling, carving the patterns and detail
etc.
5. Being carved out of a single block of wood, great attention and care is required, along with
no ordinary amounts of skill and finesse, in creating detail given that a single error could
damage the entire piece. Additionally, the carvings are deemed to be the one of the only
sculpting which uphold the religious sanctity of the wood carving tradition. Further, the
process of carving the wood is also deemed to be unique as the sculptors use tools which
are locally made.
K) Inspection Body:
The artisans traditionally practice the craft under the guidance and instructions of master artisans
as per the traditional treatise on wood carving which acts like an internal inspection mechanism.

(Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
E) Specification:
Telia Rumal cloth involves a number of intricate handmade work with cotton loom displaying a
variety of design and motifs in 3 particular colours, namely, Red, Black and White. The process of
preparation uses gingelly oil and natural vegetable dye which gives it a distinct and unique quality
in the form of its texture and smell. The defining components of Telia Rumal
1. Loom: They are woven on pit looms, the measurement of which is 7 feet in width, 21 feet in
length and 5 feet height with pit size of 2 feet width, 4 feet length and 2 ½ feet depth occupying
an area of about 150 Sq. Ft.
2. Material: The material is made from pure cotton.
3. Colours: All the Telia Rumal are in three colours only; White, Black and Red.
4. Designs/Motifs: All the designs and motifs are derived from the traditional geometrical
pattems which represent flower and leaves, half-moon designs, namely: Maddikaya,
Omkaram, Padava, Chandrudu, Hastam, Pachees, Bhucharakam, Swastik, Vimanam,
Simham, Chillaka, Gadiyaram, Muggu, Suryudu, Pakshulu and Mallepuwu.
5. The special characteristics of Telia Rumal designs are that they are hand woven and there
are no prints on the handloom materials.
F) Description:
The pattems in the Telia Rumal consist of a variety of images, based around the sub-divisions of a
square. These include the dot, square, cross, chevron, rectangle and various stepping motifs. The
initial patterns used were strictly geometric but Telia Rumals made after 1930s incorporated
figurative designs such as Maddikaya, Omkaram, Padava, Chandrudu, Hastam, Pachees,
Bhucharakam, Swastik, Vimanam, Simham, Chillaka, Gadiyaram, Muggu, Suryudu, Pakshulu and
Mallepuwu which required higher weaving skills.
The traditional Telia Rumal is restricted to only 3 colours, viz. red anything from crimson to orange
red, brown red and maroonish red), natural colour (white) and black (black or brown), sometimes
with a hint of yellow to orange or pink. If the patterned center field is predominantly dark, i.e., black
or brown, then the plain outer border will be red. If the center- field is predominantly red, the outer
border will be dark. These plain borders have delicate white lines which cross at the corners of the
kerchief, to form a fine grid which is created by the Ikat process.
The main area in which Telia Rumal is produced is Puttapaka village, Narayanpur Mandal, Yadadri
Bhongir District, Telangana State. The Puttapaka village is at a distance of 7.7 km far from Mandal
Main Town Narayanapur. Puttapaka is located 35.7 km distance from its District Main City
Nalgonda. It is located 56 km from Hyderabad of Telangana Region in Andhra Pradesh. The GI
producing region lies between17 6' 54" North Latitude and 78 56' 9" East Longitude.
Telia Rumals are eminent throughout the world for its elegant design and pattems and for its
natural dyeing methods. A classical 19s or early 20s century Telia Rumal is a square cotton cloth
dyed in a harmonious colour scheme of deeply saturated red and brownish black with a creamy
white background a shade which is the result of the pre-treatment of the cotton yam. In fact, the
name Telia Rumal oil refers to the oily touch of the cloth. Later pieces, especially those made after
independence have a rather harsh colour scheme of synthetic red, purple or violet and black.
The tradition of double Ikat textiles in Andhra Pradesh date back to the late 19th century. Some of
the earliest varieties of Telia Rumals are simple in design, but skilful in application, with the weft,
warp and double Ikat technique and geometric designs. Much of these telia fabrics were used by
Muslim nobles in Hyderabad. These Rumals were also called Asia Rumal, and thousands of these
telia rumals have been exported to Persian Gulf, Middle East, Aden, East Africa, Singapore and
Burma. Until 1930's these Telia Rumals with geometric pattem were woven in Chirala and the
surrounding villages in Guntur. While the traditional designs kept to the squares within squares
formats which later evolved and now incorporates a number of figurative designs made of
geometric pattems.
The entire Padmashali community has been recognised for their efforts in encapsulating years of
ancient culture in their pieces of (art) work. Furthermore, they were also highly involved in the
The history of Telia Rumal is very vast. It has been in existence since time immemorial, and it is
only because of the efforts of some famous designers and some hard working artisans that Telia
Rumal is getting international acclaim. Its importance as an art form can be understood from the
fact that an Australian University has introduced a course on it.
During the Nizam's dynasty, Puttapaka a small backward village of Telangana region of Andhra
Pradesh had about 20 families engaged in handloom weaving who were patronized by the rich
Muslim families, damsthanams & Nizam rulers. The officers working in the court of the Nizam used
to wear Chituki Telia Rumal as a symbolic representation of status and even the village heads
used to adom these Rumals.
Traditionally, Telia Rumals have been the cloth offered at the dargah of Ajmer Sharif in Rajasthan
with some devotees offering fifty or even hundred cloths. Telia Rumals were worn as veil by
princesses at the erstwhile court of the Nizam of Hyderabad; as a turban cloth by Arabs in the
Middle East; and continue to be worn as a lungi by fishermen in coastal Andhra Pradesh. The
Rumals were exported in large numbers to Myanmar, West Asia and East Africa in the l9th and
early 20s centuries.
I) Method of Production:
Dyes and Raw material to be used in the production process are the following:
• Cotton yarn
• Sheep dung
• Castrol seed pods are bumed to create ash for mordanting of the cotton yam
• Gingili Oil
• Recycled Cycle Tubes
• Twine
• Graph paper
• Steel rods
• Vessels
• Fire wood
• Dyes (Alizarin, Alum, Erakasu)
• Mud tubs
• Wooden sticks
• Hand Gloves
• Sketches
• Loom
• Loom accessories
• Wooden stand (x shape)
• Charka
PRE-TREATMENT OF YARN
The yam is steeped for 24 hours in the solution prepared with sheep dung. Then, any remaining
foreign matter is removed by twitching the yarn. Apart from that, castor-seed shells are burnt to get
ash which is further mixed with gingelly oil, to get a thick solution. The yarn which has been treated
with the sheep dung solution, will then be soaked in the above solution in small quantities and
washed for about 15 min, squeezed and sundried. Thereafter, the whole process is repeated, in
the sun, for 16 days, before washing and drying. Now, the yarn is ready for preparation of warp and
weft. This process makes the yam completely saturated and soft. The castor seed pod-ash
contains alumina which ensures richer, deeper and intense red colour, when dyed with alizarin.
This yarn develops a peculiar oily-smell due to use of oil in yarn treatment which leads to terming
of this square Rumals as Telia Rumal.
PRE-DYE TREATMENT
2/80s and 2/120s count cotton yarn divided in l0 bundles. Fresh sheep dung water with castor seed
powder ash mixed with water and Gingili oil Liquid (added to the ash water) divided into l0 equal
parts to treat the l0 bundles.
The yarn for these Rumals require 'mordanting', a treatment that facilitates bonding of dye to the
cotton fibre cellulose. The Telia name refers to steps in the mordant treatment that impart an oily
nature to the fabric. The first part of the treatment requires the yarns, having been soaked
overnight in water, to be washed by hand in a bath made from fresh sheep dung. After washing
very thoroughly, the yarn is squeezed out and hung in the sun for 24hours.
Meanwhile, pods from the castor plant are burnt and the ash is mixed well with water. After soaking
for several hours, castor oil is added to the liquid and the mixture is dried in the sun. When it tums
slightly white, it is ready to use. The top liquid is decanted, and water is added to the residue put
aside for subsequent treatments. The yam treated with dung is submerged in the oil-ash mixture,
washed well for 15minutes, then squeezed out and stored overnight. In the morning it is kept in the
sun. In the evening, the oil treatment is repeated and continued for sixteen days. If the time is
short, the treatment can be hastened by giving two oil treatments daily for eight days.
The yarn is then wound onto cones or cylinders in preparation for making the warp. The yarn is
taken to the padduguadda (warping machine), a large wheel that enables the correct length to be
wound quickly. A mechanism on the wheel creates crosses of the yarnat strategic places, enabling
the sequence of yam to be kept in order. After winding, yam markers are tied around the crosses,
helping the person counting threads to keep them in the correct sequential order.
PRODUCT PREPARATION
Telia Rumal is a very intricate and laborious double ikat weave. As the name suggests the yarn is
treated with oil. The products used for the treatment of the yarn are sheep dung, castor pod ashes
Each of the warp and weft threads are individually positioned on the loom prior to beating the slay,
hence it's crucial for the weaver to ensure perfection. Only 3 colors are traditionally used - red
black and white in geometrical designs. Weaving a Telia Rumal needs a great amount of practice
and perfection for the warp and weft to be meticulously converted to an artistic design. The number
of motifs makes it more complex and difficult to dye the colours in the predetermined places on the
fibre.
Warp: The Yam is then wound onto cones or cylinders in preparation for making the warp. The
yam is taken to the padduguadda (warping machine), a large wheel that enables the correct length
to be wound quickly. A mechanism on the sequence of yarn to be kept in order. After winding yam
markers are tied around the crosses, helping the person counting threads to keep them in the
correct sequential order.
The designs which are already prepared on a graph is drawn on the warp, Then the wrap is folded
for design purpose. This warp will be openly spread and will be colored from light to dark shade.
After tying with rubber it is dyed in the light shades and dried and the same process will go on for
light colour to dark shade. After completion of the dying process rubbers are removed and the warp
is opened in the full length and then the design warp is placed. Then the warp is taken out in the
street and is spread wide open to avoid disturbance in the design for every metered length is tied
with twines in sections and then the wam is taken on to the loom and continues to weave with
required weft.
Weft: The weft is taken to the "ASU" (local term) an apparatus having one side one peg and other
side several pegs. These pegs are pegged on a wooden frame which is in the shape of an arc. The
distance between the two pegs is equal to the width of the fabric the number of pegs used
depending upon the design and the remaining process is same as in the case of warp. After
completion of total tie & dye process of weft, the entire yam which is on the "ASU" is wounded on
"parivattam" then it is wound on the "pims" the pims will be in serial order, The weavers will weave
the fabric weaving The weaving process is operated by pulling a cord in the center of the loom.
When weaving the plain fabric borders, this can go extremely fast but with the double Ikat central
design, each throw of the shuttle has to be carefully checked to ensure precise design intersection.
However, there is always an unavoidable slight movement of yam that creates a feathered' edge to
the motifs. At this beginning stage adjustments are made to any imperfections of alignment by
tightening or loosening the heddles to loosen any yams that are twisted or stuck together. A master
weaver can weave the full length of eight Rumals in 4 or 5 days, however the average weaver
could take several weeks to complete the piece.
The weaving continues until all Rumals have been completed. When finished, the fabric is
starched. When dry, the product is inspected for any flaws that are then mended. This finishes the
length process. Because the greatest time is taken with the creation of the tie & dyed warp and
weft, more than one set of threads is normally prepared at one time. The amount will vary
depending on the number of repeats across a design and also how many threads are in each unit
of the design. Too large a bundle of threads should be avoided. Some fine curved designs have
many units but very few threads in each group, helping to create smooth curving lines rather than
sharply stepped outlines. As a consequence, more duplicate warps could be tied at one time in
such groups. On average, eight warps containing eight Rumals each would be prepared together.
An equal amount of weft is prepared to complete the weaving of the warps, helping to rationalize
the time spent in preparation.
The process of tie & dye design requires the fixing of the designs and patterns before the warp and
weft and coloured the threads forming the design tied and dyed repeatedly to bring in the right
colour at the right place and the interlacement of the threads produces the design on the fabric.
The dyeing over the warp and weft are spread out for weaving on a loom.
As patterns and designs emerge, the impact impart elegance and beauty to the woven fabric. Tie
and Dye techniques may be applied on the warp threads (Warp Ikkat) or the weft threads (Weft
Ikkat) either of which is called single ikkat or they may be applied on warp and weft threads in such
a way that the designs overlap each other called Double ikkat in single as well as double ikkat
,warp and weft Threads which are tied and dyed as per design should not only be positioned
accurately in proper sequences in weaving as required by the design and its colour scheme but
also should be accurately secured to prevented shifting, displacing or entangling 'with this highly
sophisticated ikkat technique complicated motifs appear exactly the same on either side of the
fabric.
J) Uniqueness:
The process of creating a Telia Rumal is a very intricate and laborious double Ikat weave.
Uniqueness of the dyeing and weaving cluster is based on the usage of the following natural
materials:
i) Natural alizarin dyeing.
ii) Sheep dung.
iii) Castrol seed pod ash.
iv) Gingili oil.
A triumvirate of traditionally used colours, namely: red, black (earakasu) and white are used in the
traditional process of producing Rumal. The fabric used in the creation of Telia Rumal is 100%
cotton as no other fabric can support the traditional process used in its production. The unique
feature of Telia Rumal is that when it is worn as a turban in summer it keeps the head cool and
when it is worn in winter It keeps the head warm.
Another unique feature of Rumal is that when it is worn as a lungi by the fishermen the smell of the
fabric attracts fish while the nature of the fabric keeps the salt away from the fabric so the lungi
does not get wet and become uncomfortable for the wearer. This yam develops a distinct oily-smell
due to the use of oil in yam treatment which lingers even after the creation of Rumal thereby
adding on to the uniqueness of the product. Telia Rumal can only be created using traditional
handloom process and by not any other mechanical means as otherwise the very quality of Rumal
will be lost.
The special characteristics of Telia Rumal designs are only woven and there will be no prints on
the handloom materials. The traditional vegetable dyes used in the production of Telia Rumal have
huge number of medicinal benefits. Unlike chemical dyes vegetable dyes do not contain
carcinogen. After each wash the vegetable dye enables the fabric to retain its colour and not fade.
In fact, Telia Rumal becomes brighter after each wash because of the presence of oil in it.
The Telia Rumal includes geometric designs namely: Maddikaya, Omkaram, Padava, Chandrudu,
Hastam, Pachees, Bhucharakam, Swastik, Vimanam, Simham, Chillaka, Gadiyaram, Muggu,
Suryudu, Pakshulu and Mallepuwu.
The inspection body is constituted consisting of the below mentioned persons to keep the check
upon the quality of the products.
l. One Representative from Craft Council of Telangana
2. One Representative from Craft Council of India
3. One Representative from Department of Handlooms, Government of Telangana
4. One Representative from the Consortium of Puttapaka Handloom Cluster – IHDS
5. Three (03) Producers of Telia Rumal.
This inspection body shall act independently to ensure the quality check upon the goods and will
keep the check on the quality, manufacturing and mechanism of the goods.
L) Others:
The work of the Telia Rumal community has been recognized globally and has received various
accolades from places of international repute which include UNESCO, Cheonglu International Craft
Biennale Award and also the Shilpguru Award as well as the National Master Weaver Award.

bless the newly married couple. In local traditional practice during Sohrai festival and in Khovars –
made in local marriages, ritualistic mural paintings are being made on the walls, such paintings are
distinct in nature and due to events in which it is being practiced it is being referred as Sohrai-
Khovar painting.
F) Description:
“Sohrai-Khovar Painting” is a traditional and ritualistic mural art being practiced by local tribal
women during local harvest and marriage seasons using local naturally available soils of different
colours in area of Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand. Mural of Sohrai-Khovar painting is a profusion
of lines, dots, animal figures and plants, often representing religious iconography such as the
mythic tree of life or Pashupati (a horned image of Lord Shiva as the lord of animals).
Such mural paintings are being practiced by women of different local tribes, and some other

The traditional term “Soh” means to drive away and “rai” is a stick in local language, denoting the
early domestication of animals for agriculture and accumulation of wealth. Sohrai is a traditional
harvesting festival, which is being celebrated for domesticated animals- helpful in their agriculture
and daily life. The Sohrai festival which marks the beginning of harvesting season is of five days.
On the second day of the festival, which is devoted for invoking blessings from Bongas (spirts
which are worshiped) for individual homes, when the cattle are sent to the fields in the morning to
graze, in their absence, the womenfolks decorate their huts by this traditional ritualistic painting
over the walls.
Since domesticated animals are important part of their life in terms of agriculture and daily life and
for which they celebrate this festival, a ritualistic symbol of Pasupati (lord of animals) is
predominantly found in drawings made during Sohrai. This mural paintings generally have
drawings of some ritualistic geometrical structures and motifs of local animals, birds, plants, and
local wildlife. Similar practice of painting in mural is being made in mural form, during local
Such ritual practice of painting making is traditionally being practiced only by local tribal women
and is a matriarchal practice in which tradition of such art passes from mother to the daughter. The
local population of Hazaribagh in which the practice of such paintings are more prevalent may be

Distinct Pattern Strong aesthetic value with combination of rhythmic and lyrical
patterns of geometries including triangle, circle, ovals, and curves
along with animals, trees, birds and flowers which have
traditionally been found in local forest and the area.
Primarily two kinds of murals – Comb-cutting and Simple
Technique.
Ritualistic belif Related to the tradition belief, ritual, life & surrounding environment
including different abstract natural forms and motifs of forests,
trees, animals, birds, flowers. Purainpat (forest of lotuses), along
with ritual symbolic designs or patterns like Mother Goddess and
Pashupati (Lord of animals) are very common characteristics.
Based upon different areas and specific tribes of Hazaribagh among which Sohrai- Khovar painting
is being practiced, it has gathered different specialties in respect to characteristics. Based upon
The Sohra-Khovar painting is primarily being practiced only in district of Hazaribagh, however in
recent years for promotional purpose it is also being practiced in some other parts of Jharkhand.
The Hazaribag district of the State of Jharkhand is situated in the north east part of North
Chotanagpur Division. The boundary of this district consists of districts of Gaya (Bihar) and
Koderma in the north, Ramgarh in the south, Giridih and Bokaro in the east, and Chatra in the
west.
Hazaribagh plateau, the part of Chotanagpur Platue is the northern tract of the massif divided by
the Damodar River from east to west, with the Ranchi plateau lying to the south. The Hazaribagh
being a part of Chotanagpur plateau is surrounded by forests having different hills like Sitagarha,
Bamanbere and Canary Hill.
There are availability of different types of soils in the region of Hazaribagh having differences in
mineral content and therefore in pigmentation. Due to the presence of iron, soil of Hazaribagh is
generally red in colour, whereas at many places, the presence of mica makes it pink also. Lower
soil of Hazaribagh is yellowish white in colour, whereas sandy loam soil is found around the
Damodar River basin giving the white colour to the soil. The presence of manganese in the region
also makes the availability of black soil in the region.
River Konar, a tributary of Damodar River traverse through the Hazaribagh town, whereas the
Barakar, the Damador, the Haharo (in Barkagaon range), the Garhi (in Tandwa Range) and the
Barsoti river (in Barhi Range) are other rivers flowing in the region of Hazaribagh.
The name ‘Sohrai’ is said to have derived from a paleolithic age word—‘soro’, meaning to drive
with a stick. One of the oldest art forms of wall painting, this tribal art has the history of more than
5000 years and can be traced somewhere between 7,000-4,000 BC. The Sohrai-Khovar art
tradition is evidenced in the prehistoric Mesolithic rock (7,000 BC) in form of rock cave art in the
hilly ranges of Hazaribgah district of north Jharkhand. However, such art has been in practice
locally since time immemorial but the local origin may be traced from such pre-historic age only.
Such ancient rock art was first discovered, on a Mesolithic rock in form of ancient art at Isco,
Hazaribagh in 1991 and which was followed later by the discovery of around a dozen prehistoric
rock art sites of more than 5,000 years old, in the North Karanpura Valley of Hazaribagh. The
history of such form of art is related to prehistoric age, and such historical fact came into light in
1991 by the discovery of Isco rock art site, in nearby area of Hazaribagh. Subsequently over twenty
such painted shelters have been discovered. Furthermore, hundreds of motifs associated with the
Mesolithic rock art found in palaeoarchaeology sites like Isco, Nautangwa Pahar (Salga),
Hazaribagh and several shelters in the Satpahar range (formerly in Hazaribagh, but now in Chatra
district, i.e. Thethangi, Raham, Sidpa, etc) carry rock paintings with motifs found in the Sohrai-
Khovar paintings of Hazaribagh. Many of these sites are also acknowledged by the Archaeological
Survey of India in 1992- 1993. The rock art was studied in 1993-95 by Erwin Neumayer of Vienna,
a renowned authority on Indian rock art, and S.B. Otta, Head of the Prehistory Department of the
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Nagpur. Both authorities dated the rock art to the Meso-
Chalcolithic period.
Linking these ancient rock drawings and the practice of present day drawings on their walls by
locals, a renowned ethnographer Erwin Neumayer in his book “Lines on Stone, The Prehistoric
Rock Art of India” notes as follows:
“A comparison between ancient rock pictures and modern house wall pictures often discloses
strong stylistic and thematic analogies. The close study of housewall pictures teaches us, that the
pictures are an ideologic construct, which in many cases is defined much more by its use during a
particular festival-season than by its shape, which although the iconography might be fixed- will be
recognised even if the artist has not kept to many of the necessary features of this convention.”
It is being claimed that the following upon the similar patterns and styles once used to create ‘Isko’
and other rock arts in the region like Satpahar in Hazaribagh district, earlier this form of art making
which was prevalent in caves, got shifted to the houses once the civilisation developed and local
people shifted themselves to houses with mud walls.
The traditional term “Soh” means to drive away and “rai” is a stick, denoting the early
domestication of animals for agriculture and accumulation of wealth. Sohrai is an ancient word
carrying traditional significance enacted in ritual paintings done only by tribal and traditional women
artists.
Traditionally during the Sohrai festival (harvest festival) which is being celebrated on the 16th
Kartik, the day after the Dewali, village houses are being painted by tribal women as a ritual of
thank giving for a good harvest with mural paintings, whereas in marriage season similar murals
are being made the walls of Khovars. After the name of Sohrai festival and Khovar in which such
murals are being practiced, such paintings are being referred as Sohrai-Khovar painting. This
Ritualistic art being made on walls of their houses are to welcome the harvest and to celebrate the
cattle in case of Sohrai festival and to bless the newly married couple in case of Khovars. Durring
the Sohrai festival women clean their houses and decorate their walls with such murals, whereas
during marriage such murals are being made by women in the wall of Khovars (Nuptial chamber).
Describing the love of colours and application of those on their walls in form of naturally available
local soils of different colours, ET Dalton- an ICS officer of British Period in his book “Descriptive
Ethnology of Bengal” writes about the Santals of this region in 1872:
“They paint their walls in alternate broad stripes of Red, White and Black – native clays and
charcoal furnishing the pigments……”
D H E Sunder, a British officer of erstwhile British India in the “Final report of the survey and
settlement of the Palamau government estate, Palamau district, in Chotanagpur, Bengal, Seasons
1894-95 to 1896-97” describing the rituals of marriage ceremonies being practiced in adjoining
region writes:
“…… Two baskets are then brought and the bride and bridegroom step on one and then on the
other and so enter a hut, the walls of which are painted with circles called Kohbar.”
Sarat Chandra Roy, who is also known as the father of Indian Anthropology, the first Indian
ethnographer, and as the first Indian anthropologist, in his famous book “The Oraons of Chota
Nagpur: Their History, Economic Life, and Social Organization”, published in 1915, has referred the
following picture depicting a outer wall of the house of a Oraon of this region showing the drawings
made over the wall, which can easily be identified as Sohrai-Khovar painting as it has drawing of
“Purainpat”, the making of which is still a distinguished prevalent practice in their drawings of
Sohrai-Khovar painting by local tribals.
S.C Roy as the editor of pioneering Journal of Antropology in India, Man of India, in an edition of
1921, recording about the practice this wall painting among Ho tribes of Chotanagpur (Hazaribagh
is the part of old Chotanagpur region) under the title “Ethnographic notes and queries”, writes:
William George Archer, who wrote as W. G. Archer, served as a British civil servant in nearby
areas and was an art historian, and later become a museum curator of prestigious Victoria and
Albert Museum, London, along with his wife Mildred Archer who was also an Art Historian of high
repute had published their first known publication in Axis magazine of London which was a well
known abstract publicising magazine of contemporary art as “Santhal Painting” in year 1936. The
pictures published by them under the title “Santhal Painting” with their background in form of
abstract is the depiction of mural paintings being drawn in adjoining areas of this region on mud
walls. The geometric designs, drawings of elephant and woman in their published picture of murals
of nearby areas can still be correlated with the prevalent art practice of Sohrai-Khovar painting.
“The paintings themselves are done by the women in terracotta and ochre, obtained from oxides in
the soil ….”
Further describing the uniqueness of such painting imbedded in their traditions, they mention:
“With their common style the paintings form part of tribal stock, developed by family sensibilities
and matured by repetition.”
“The necessity of these paintings in Santhal life — a life based on agriculture and with no margins,
a bare “rice” culture — would prove, if any proof were needed, the “naturalness” of an abstract
style.”
The Santals which are major tribal inhabitants of the Hazaribagh region apart of some other parts
of India, Charulal Mukherjea in his book The Santals, describing about the artistic characteristics of
this tribe mentions “Santal walls are the beauty-spots of the hamlet. Here the inner artistic craving
of the primitive tribe has displayed itself in a realm of phantasy. In some places, we saw the walls
painted with a variety of colours, white, yellow, black, red and chocolate; sometimes with one
colour and sometimes with alternate stripes, again with queer patches of triangles and rectangles”.
Somnath Chakraverty, in his paper “Interpreting rock art in India: a holistic and cognitive approach”
in XXIII Valcamonica Symposium, 2009 describing the link of ancient rock art found on different
sites of Hazaribagh region with the present practice of Sohrai-Khovar painting, writes as follows:
“In Jharkhand state the rock art sites are related to a local legend of ‘Kohbar’ or marriage booth of
a tribal king and the newlywed couple spent the night of their marriage in the rock shelter already
decorated with paintings. Some of the sites, located near the Kiul river and in the bordering areas
between Bihar and Jharkhand are also known to the local villagers as - Kohbar and local rivulet is
identified as - Rani Gadar or after the unknown queen. The figurative motifs, often stylized horse
riders, single or in groups, two persons carrying another within a palanquin or marriage - litter,
symbolic designs and other unidentified motifs are common.”
I) Method of Production:
Raw Material
The “Sohrai-Khovar Painting” has traditionally been painted on mud house walls but in recent years
it is being painted on other canvases too. Raw materials used for Sohrai-Khovar painting also
changes with the use of canvases. However due to addition of new other canvases, few materials
Depending upon the use of different canvases for Sohrai-Khovar painting, following different kinds
of materials is being used painting of this art.
The Natural earth soils which are naturally available in Hazaribagh district (a platue region) is being
used to make “Sohrai-Khovar Paintings”. The different types of soil are as under:
There are two techniques used to produce the murals viz. Comb-cutting technique and Simple
technique.
Comb-cutting Technique
Comb-cutting Technique is a technique of producing such murals mostly being used by Kurmi
women in the few villages of Hazaribagh. In Comb-cutting technique- a layer of black or dark grey
manganese-rich clay is first applied on the wall. Once it dries, a second layer of whitish kaolin clay
is applied. When the second layer is just set but not fully dry, the designs are scraped onto the wall
using a broken comb or a similar toothed instrument. This scratches of comb in form of drawings
over the wet kaolin clay revealing the blackened surface below, resulting into designs comprising
multiple delicate black lines on a whitened surface, giving a unique form of murals.
Simple Technique
To make this mural painting tribal women firstly coat the wall with a layer of white mud, and while
the white layer is still wet, they draw the painting with their fingertips or with chewed sal wood
Towards making the ritualistic mural paintings of Sohrai-Khovar, the red line is drawn first as
according to their belief it represents the blood of the ancestors and is helpful in further procreation
and fertility. The next line is black which signifies eternal dead stone and mark of the God, Shiva in
their customary ritualistic belief. The next all-encompassing outer lines stand in their traditional
values of protection, fidelity, and chastity. The white is painted with the last year’s rice, grounded
with milk into gruel, this represents food.
Process of Painting
To make this Sohrai-Khovar painting tribal women adopt the following indigenous method:
J) Uniqueness:
The Sohrai-Khovar painting is unique due to its distinctive characteristics in respect to following
factors:
Features
This tribal indigenous form of practicing art in mural form is being used to decorate their houses at
different traditional occasions. Depiction of murals on their mud houses in colour of Red, White &
Black with strong aesthetic value are combination of rhythmic and lyrical patterns of geometries
including triangle, circle, ovals, and curves along with animals, trees, birds and flowers which have
traditionally been found in local forest and the area. Depictions in their such non-narrative murals
are related with their tradition belief, ritual, life & surrounding environment, which includes different
Geographical distinctness
A. Artisans of Sohrai-Khovar painting, which are largely tribal and village people, are traditionally
being found only in particular geography i.e Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. The Sohrai-Khovar painting of
Hazaribagh is done by local Santal, Oraon, Munda, Agaria, Kurmi, Prajapati, and Ganju of
Hazaribagh.
B. Materials used are distinct, as different kinds of soils which are being used for different colours
in Sohrai-Khovar Painting are locally available soil only. The natural availability of such different
soils (which are distinctly being used for Sohrai-Khovar painting as colours) together in any
particular region is the distinct feature of the region of Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. The twig toothbrush
(Datwan), which are being used as painting brush for different canvases, are manually chewed
twigs of Saal tree- a plant available in local forests.
K) Inspection Body:
Each Sohrai-Khovar painting are treated with the natural earth ochre colours & epoxy binders to
ensure durability, which ensures genuine quality in terms of material used, pigmentation and others
through experienced supervision of Artisans.
An inspection committee has been constituted to regulate the use and control the quality of the
production of Sohrai-Khovar Paintings of Hazaribagh.
L) Others:
Many articles on this art have appeared in important museum and ethnographic journals apart of
leading magazines.
The Films Division of India has made an important film on this art in 2000, which won the
prestigious Rajat Kamal Award given by the President of lndia. More recently a film has also been
produced on this art in Germany.

Can a registered Geographical Indication or authorized user be removed from the register?
Yes, The Appellate Board or the Registrar of Geographical Indication has the power to remove the
Geographical Indication or authorized user from the register. The aggrieved person can file an appeal
within three months from the date of communication of the order.
In December 1999, Parliament passed the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection)
Act 1999. This Act seeks to provide for the registration and protection of Geographical Indications relating
to goods in India. This Act is administered by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks,
who is the Registrar of Geographical Indications. The Geographical Indications Registry is located at
Chennai.
The Registrar of Geographical Indication is divided into two parts. Part ’A’ consists of particulars relating to
registered Geographical indications and Part ‘B’ consists of particulars of the registered authorized users.
The registration process is similar to both for registration of geographical indication and an authorized user
