3. DESCRIPTION/SYNOPSIS
The topic of our project is Gombak quartz ridge where it is required for our team to find
any local NGO relating to the ridge as our project partner. Basically our project will introduce
what is quartz ridge as the whole. The scope that we need to include in our project are the
meaning of Quartz ridge, the meaning of UNESCO world heritage site. Besides, it also requires
us to find the answer to whether or not Gombak Quartz Ridge should be designated as a
UNESCO world heritage site also last but not least relating to our scope of study where we have
to discover the laws applicable in Malaysia to protect and conserve natural heritage sites.
In the early 20th century Gombak Quartz Ridge was known as Klang Gates Ridge which
is documented as the longest quartz formation in the world, spanning more than 14km long and
200m wide. From afar, the rugged and long, protruding ridge looks like the back fin of a sleeping
dragon. It is not surprising that locals call it the Dragon Back Ridge or Dragon Backbone.
It is the location of the Klang Gates Dam, which was built to store water for Kuala
Lumpur and the Klang Valley. The nominated site is built entirely of quartz, a natural mineral
with chemical composition of silicon dioxide (SiO2), formed when residual magma crystallized
and consolidated within vertical slab of dyke as the magma forced themselves through large
linear fissures within massive granitic rock known as Kuala Lumpur Granite about 200 million
years ago. Located just 20 minutes outside of Kuala Lumpur, the quartz hill and green
surroundings have been a temporary escape for nature lovers from the hectic city life. At the base
of the ridge is the suburban neighborhood of Taman Melawati. There were fears that the tranquil
and peace would not last. When the original plan for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) was
announced, the Quartz Ridge had been included as a tunnel would be dug under it.

4. PLANNING
● The instructions and topics were given by our lecturer, Dr Maizatun, and our topic
is pertaining to Gombak quartz ridge.
● Do some research on Gombak quartz ridge and prepare a list of competent NGOS
that are related with Gombak quartz ridge to be our project partner.
● After we have done our research, we found out that the relevant NGO that is
suitable to be interviewed relating to our topic is Taman Melawati Residents
Associations and Society of Eco Greater Melawati (SeeGem).
● We approach SeeGem and ask them if they want to be our project partner, in
which fortunately they accepted our offer.
● We prepared some questions to interview SeeGem.
● We had an interview session with the director of SeeGem, Mr. Kennedy, and her
assistant, Mrs. Salina.
● We went on a site visit to the entrance of the quartz ridge, Bukit Tabur and the
village nearby the quartz ridge.
● Implementation on ways to protect and conserve the quartz ridge.

8. EVIDENCES OF VISIT
Activities:
We were conducting an interview with Mr Kennedy and Mrs Salina from Taman
Melawati Residents Associations and Society of Eco Greater Melawati (SeeGem).
We were looking around the River Centre and talked with the residents who participated
in ‘Gotong-Royong’ activities.
17
2) Taman Melawati
Activities:
Mr Kennedy was showing us the Klang dam and panoramic views of Taman Melawati
which we can see from the bottom hill. From there, we can see how huge and long
Quartz Ridge is.
We found one type of stone from the hill where it seems like granite but we are not sure
about that since Quartz Ridge produces many types of volcanic rocks such as pegmatites,
metamorphic and plutonic rocks.
18
19
3) Entry point of Bukit Tabur at west loop entry in Kampung Klang Gates.
Activities:
Since it is divided into eastern and western, Mr Kennedy brought us to the entry point of
West Bukit Tabur where it is located in Kampung Klang Gates.
There is a trail map of Bukit Tabur where it is actually having around 17 stations in total
to arrive at the peak of the hill.
4) Main entry point of West Bukit Tabur at Hulu Gombak forest reserve.
Activities:
Mr Kennedy showed us another entry point of Bukit Tabur near the Jabatan Air Selangor
or it is known as Dragon Back track. It can be seen that the authorities have put yellow
black tape and lots of information such as warning sign boards around the area to warn
20
people not to use the track. However, Mr Kennedy told us that people are still using the
track and they even tore down the warning tape.
We have been shown that even though the forest has been reserved, there are still people
who throw the garbage and waste there.
We also found a crystal river behind the Jabatan Air Selangor. We have to walk down the
stairs to see the river. It is very rare and relaxing to see such clear water.

Here are some photographs of us with our NGO partner, Mr Michael Kennedy and Mrs Salina
after the interview and another site visit.

10. RECORDED VIDEO ON OUR VISIT
For the interview session, we were not allowed to record any audio or video. Thus, we have
made a compilation video of our activities done by us along the site visit. Here we present to
you.
23
11. INTERVIEW SESSIONS WITH SEEGEM
Question: When we told our friends that our task is on quartz ridge, most of them responded with
a question: what is quartz ridge? Are you aware that many Malaysians still do not know and are
concerned about the existence of the quartz ridge itself? And how do you plan to introduce the
quartz ridge to the Malaysians?
Answer: The older generations and residents in Ulu Klang know of the existence of the quartz
ridge. It is on the tourism map in Selangor as one of the attractions. But, we did not plan on
introducing or promoting it publicly as we did not want to invite the developers especially as we
believe there should be no development to be made to the quartz ridge.
Question: Based on our research, there are few species of plants including crystals that only grow
in that Quartz ridge. Therefore, we would like to ask you to what extent the uniqueness of Quartz
Ridge has been introduced to the society or nation?
Answer: The uniqueness of the Quartz Ridge has been listed in the Eco Greater website. It can be
accessed by anyone who would like to know about it. However, the aim of the organisations is
not to show to the public what Quartz Ridge initially was because they assume everyone who
lives in the Klang valley area already knows the place or else you cannot regard yourself as a
person who lives here.
Question: As we know that quartz ridge consists of minerals and crystal. Is there any illegal
experiment done towards the crystal at quartz ridge, and if so, are there any approaches relating
to the protection of the crystals?
Answer: Recently, the experiment towards the crystals at Quartz Ridge seems to cease. Years
ago, illegal mining was done at the quartz ridge but no action was taken. However, the crystal at
24
the quartz ridge has no gold in it which makes it have no value. Consequently, the crystal is just
meant to be experimented and not for accessories purposes.
Question: On the news back in 2019, there were proposals of using the Quartz Ridge as to build
a tunnel to link Gombak and Bentong, ECRL, EKVE, and TNB power line also developers
would build condominium and apartments in which may cause a big disaster to the Klang Gates
Quartz Ridge environmentally. Because we believe that it might be continuing, so we would like
to know if there are any legal steps that have been taken by the authorities or organisations to
prevent this from happen?
Answer: Through MPS, engage with government, locus standi, local interest, there is always
precaution from the society. However, as the royalty has more interest in this, therefore the
economy prevails. So, quite difficult to prevent the developer as they can easily get the royalty.
Question: Researchers found that at the Klang Gates Quartz Ridge was built up by intrusion
quartz vein which the fractures can cause the rock fall failure and it might be dangerous if the
rock tower suddenly fell during the visiting period. What are the steps that have been taken to
ensure that the place is safe without interrupting the environment?
Answer: The intrusion had caused no dangerous rock falling. It was just a minor rock falling
when people used to hike but it was not sufficient to consider it as major rock falling and
dangerous to people. In other words, the rocks had eroded whenever people used to climb to the
top.
Question: Based on a few articles by New Straits Time, I believe that you are against any
development which is not in parallel with the ecosystem of Klang Gates Quartz Ridge. So, if in
the future there will be a sustainable eco development to be made in the quartz ridge, what would
you say on that?
Answer: We believe that the quartz ridge should stay as it is. This is because we don't want the
quartz ridge to be like GeoPark in Langkawi. The quartz ridge should be left alone so that it can
serve its purpose and significance to the environment and to us.
25
Question: Bukit Tabur, known as one of the famous hiking locations, is a part of the ridge. As
you’re one of the organizations who is actively engaged in protecting nature, do you encourage
the public to go hiking there or is their hiking activities could threaten the cleanliness of the
ridge?
Answer: We did not encourage the public to go hiking at Bukit Tabur, due to safety reasons.
Currently the trail is closed, it is illegal and deemed trespassing to hike up Bukit Tabur without
permits from The Selangor Forestry Department. However, many are not aware about this and
the fact that some locals encourage the visitors to go hiking there can bring any possible dangers.
There have been a series of accidents on the trail and recently, there was a case of French tourist
who died in fall there. Furthermore, due to the hiking activities there is rubbish around the place
and this surely could affect the image of Gombak Quartz Ridge as it is listed as one of the
UNESCO world heritage sites.
Question: We are aware that Gombak Quartz Ridge is one of the UNESCO world heritage sites.
In your opinion, what is the ridge best attraction for it to be listed under UNESCO heritage site?
And do you believe that with this achievement, the ridge could be protected and preserved from
being exploited?
Answer: There are certain criterias for the places or any ridge to be listed under UNESCO world
heritage sites and Gombak Quartz Ridge fulfil the requirements. One of the criterias is, first the
ridge must be unique. The ridge is not unique only due its size, but its shape and also the beauty
of the landscape. The ridge is also believed to be the longest quartz in the world which is 200
meters wide and 14 km long. This is one of the special features of Gombak Quartz Ridge and for
further understanding of the criterias, it can be found in the UNESCO website.
12. IMPLEMENTATION
When we met our project partner, they did tell us that they didn't intend to publicise the
quartz ridge as they want to avoid developers eyeing the quartz ridge. Therefore, instead of
26
publicizing the quartz ridge we suggest that we publicise the importance of quartz ridge so that
the people would know the benefit of it and work together to preserve the quartz ridge. Since we
are students, we aim to create awareness among our friends. For instance, we can set up a booth
around the university area to preach on the importance and the beauty of quartz ridge by
distributing flyers or brochures providing the said information on it. Furthermore, students are
urged to visit River Care & Environment Centre (RCEC) which is founded by our project
partner, SeeGem. The representative from SeeGem, Mr Kennedy encouraged students to come
and be involved with their activities as it will help us to engage with nature. Also, Mr Kennedy
hopes that more students take an active approach to nation building with nature and the
environment as its center and use the GREduAction, a method of learning by practical approach.
It is believed to be a better approach for students to feel how important our environment is to the
world today.
15. REFLECTION
To summarise, there are many things we have learnt throughout the process of making
this project successful. Since the day we have been assigned the topic, we were so lost as we
because of the lack of knowledge on what exactly a Quartz ridge is and what is the importance of
it as compared to the other topics assigned to the other groups. So, we went for a consultation
with our lecturer for the first time and we also did some research about it. It is however not
adequate to summarise our understanding towards the purpose of this project which requires us
to go for a site visit.
After making an appointment with our NGO, Kennedy Michael, Secretary for TMRA and
Deputy Chairman of the Society of Eco Greater Melawati, we were conducting an interview with
him and his secretary, Mrs Salina. The residents of Taman Melawati were having the ‘gotong-
royong’, cleaning and planting when we first arrived at the River Care and Environment Centre
(RCEC). We got a chance to talk to them and they even invited us to the cabin (Picture 1) to
show us everything about RCEC. We were so lucky as our main partner, Mr Kennedy Michael,
was guiding us the whole site visit. He brought us to many places around Taman Melawati to
give us a very clear understanding of what is actually Quartz Ridge and we ourselves got to see
places which are to say very relatable and close to Quartz Ridge. Since we have seen our own,
we agree that Bukit Tabur is actually not recommended to hike as the hill is actually quite steep
27
and dangerous (Picture 2). Because of that, there are already lots of cases that have caused death
since last year (Picture 3 and 4).
Nevertheless, this project somehow makes us appreciate the environment more and
interestingly, we started to develop our interest towards the environment by updating any
information from social media. It does make us realise that the environment actually plays a very
important role to the society and nation in terms of life of all creations as well as the economy
and heritage of our country in line with the Sustainable Development Goals which has been
adopted in Malaysia since the 1970s. In conclusion, we have more understanding about what is
actually Quartz Ridge as a whole now as compared to the zero knowledge that we had at the first
time and we realise that it has so much related to our course, environmental law and society.

1) Question: When we told our friends that our task is on quartz ridge, most of them
responded with a question: what is quartz ridge? Are you aware that many Malaysians
still do not know and are concerned about the existence of the quartz ridge itself? And
how do you plan to introduce the quartz ridge to the Malaysians?
Answer: The older generations and residents in Ulu Klang know of the existence of the
quartz ridge. It is on the tourism map in Selangor as one of the attractions. But, we did
not plan on introducing or promoting it publicly as we did not want to invite the
developers especially as we believe there should be no development to be made to the
quartz ridge.

2) Question: Based on our research, there are few species of plants including crystals that
only grow in that Quartz ridge. Therefore, we would like to ask you to what extent the
uniqueness of Quartz Ridge has been introduced to the society or nation?
Answer: The uniqueness of the Quartz Ridge has been listed in the UNESCO website. It
can be accessed by anyone who would like to know about it. However, the aim of the
organisations is not to show to the public what Quartz Ridge initially was because they
assume everyone who lives in the Klang valley area already knows the place or else you
cannot regard yourself as a person who lives here.
3) Question: As we know that quartz ridge consists of minerals and crystal. Is there any
illegal experiment done towards the crystal at quartz ridge, and if so, are there any
approaches relating to the protection of the crystals?
Answer: Recently, the experiment towards the crystals at Quartz Ridge seems to cease.
Years ago, illegal mining was done at the quartz ridge but no action was taken. However,
the crystal at the quartz ridge has no gold in it which makes it have no value.
Consequently, the crystal is just meant to be experimented and not for accessories
purposes.
4) Question: On the news back in 2019, there were proposals of using the Quartz Ridge as
to build a tunnel to link Gombak and Bentong, ECRL, EKVE, and TNB power line also
developers would build condominium and apartments in which may cause a big disaster
to the Klang Gates Quartz Ridge environmentally. Because we believe that it might be
continuing, so we would like to know if there are any legal steps that have been taken by
the authorities or organisations to prevent this from happening?
Answer: Through MPS, engage with government, locus standi, local interest, there is
always precaution from the society. However, as the royalty has more interest in this,
therefore the economy prevails. So, quite difficult to prevent the developer as they can
easily get the royalty.
5) Question: Researchers found that at the Klang Gates Quartz Ridge was built up by
intrusion quartz vein which the fractures can cause the rock fall failure and it might be
dangerous if the rock tower suddenly fell during the visiting period. What are the steps
that have been taken to ensure that the place is safe without interrupting the environment?
Answer: The intrusion had caused no dangerous rock falling. It was just a minor rock
falling when people used to hike but it was not sufficient to consider it as major rock
falling and dangerous to people. In other words, the rocks had eroded whenever people
used to climb to the top.
6) Question: Based on a few articles by New Straits Time, I believe that you are against any
development which is not in parallel with the ecosystem of Klang Gates Quartz Ridge.
41
So, if in the future there will be a sustainable eco development to be made in the quartz
ridge, what would you say on that?
Answer: We believe that the quartz ridge should stay as it is. This is because we don't
want the quartz ridge to be like GeoPark in Langkawi. The quartz ridge should be left
alone so that it can serve its purpose and significance to the environment and to us.
7) Question: Bukit Tabur, known as one of the famous hiking locations, is a part of the
ridge. As you’re one of the organizations who is actively engaged in protecting nature, do
you encourage the public to go hiking there or is their hiking activities could threaten the
cleanliness of the ridge?
Answer: We did not encourage the public to go hiking at Bukit Tabur, due to safety
reasons. Currently the trail is closed, it is illegal and deemed trespassing to hike up Bukit
Tabur without permits from The Selangor Forestry Department. However, many are not
aware about this and the fact that some locals encourage the visitors to go hiking there
can bring any possible dangers. There have been a series of accidents on the trail and
recently, there was a case of French tourist who died in fall there. Furthermore, due to the
hiking activities there is rubbish around the place and this surely could affect the image
of Gombak Quartz Ridge as it is listed as one of the UNESCO world heritage sites.
8) Question: We are aware that Gombak Quartz Ridge is one of the UNESCO world
heritage sites. In your opinion, what is the ridge best attraction for it to be listed under
UNESCO heritage site? And do you believe that with this achievement, the ridge could
be protected and preserved from being exploited?
Answer: There are certain criterias for the places or any ridge to be listed under
UNESCO world heritage sites and Gombak Quartz Ridge fulfil the requirements. One of
the criterias is, first the ridge must be unique. The ridge is not unique only due its size,
but its shape and also the beauty of the landscape. The ridge is also believed to be the
longest quartz in the world which is 200 meters wide and 14 km long. This is one of the
special features of Gombak Quartz Ridge and for further understanding of the criterias, it
can be found in the UNESCO website.
