Subject & Predicates

A subject is the person or thing


that is doing an action or the
person or thing that is the
focus of the sentence.

The predicate of the sentence


is the part that contains the
action.
Simple Subject & Complete Subject
Simple subject- just the subject, no
descriptors Ex: The young students
enjoyed the game.
Complete subject- the subject and
descriptors Ex. The young students
enjoyed the game.

Simple predicate & Complete

Simple predicate- verb or verbs that


connected to the subject. Ex:The old
brown polka dot box was under the
table.
Complete predicate-a part of a
sentence that contain the action. Ex: The
hero rescued the crowd.

What are Clause?
A clause a group of words containing a
subject and predicate and functioning
as member of a complex or compound
sentence.

An independent clause is a group of


words that contain a subject and verb
and expresses a complete thought

A dependent clause is a group of words


that contain a subject and verb but
does not expresses a complete thought.

Two example of a independent clause:

 John studies in the cafeteria for his


chemistry quiz
 We walk to school

Two dependent clause example:


 Where was he born .
 When the cake is done baking.

Noun Clause
A noun clause is dependent Clause
that act as a noun. Not Clause begin
with words such as: How, That,
What, Whatever, When, Where,
Whether, Which, Whichever, Who,
Whoever, Whom, Whomever and
Why.

 Noun Clause as subject Ex:


That she do not pass the exam is
obvious at this point.
 Noun Clause as Object Ex:
I don’t know who is he.
 Noun Clause as Object of preposition
Harry is not the best provieler of what
Margie needs.

Adverb Clause

An adverb clause(adverbial claues) is a
dependent clause that modifies a verb
adjective or another adverb.It begins with a
subordinating (dependent) conjuction.
It tells how when where why or to what
extend.

Adverb Clauses of time:


When he comes,he will tell us the story.

Adverb Clause of place:


You can put it wherever you like

Adverb clause of condition:


Whether ram gives him money or not he will speak
the truth

Adjective clause
An adjective Clause is a dependent clause that
like an adjective modifies a noun or pronoun.
An adjective Clause being with words such as
that, when, where, who, whom, who is, which
and why.
Example of who:
Mr. Brandon who is the manager of bentley press is coming to visit us
Example of whom:
The lady to whom you speak just now is my teacher.
Example of whose:
Josh whose brother is my neighbor has gone to England.
Example of which:
Our team which has won the cup will return tomorrow
Example of what:
I didn’t hear what you said
Example of that:
The dog that performs the most tricks will win the prize I
