2. Verb Phrase

4. Adjective Phrase

5. Gerund Phrase
A gerund is a verb ending with –ing, but, it works as a noun and
can act as a subject, object, or complement in a sentence.

Ex : a) than narrowly avoided driving off the cliff.

b) Eating ice cream on a hot day can be a good way to cool
off.

6. Participial Phrase
Phrase that looks like a verb, but actually functions as an
adjective; it modifies a noun in the same sentence.
Participial phrases will always start with a participle. A participle
is formed from a verb, but it acts as a noun or an adjective.

The participle in a participial phrase can be either the present

participle or the past participle.

https://englishsentences.com/
• The present participle of a verb expresses the action of a verb,
specifically in the present. It will always end in –ing, every
single time.

• Meanwhile, the past participle of a verb is not always as easy

to pick out. They usually end in -ed, for regular past participles.
But irregular past participles are out there, ready to try and
confuse you. Don’t let them, though, because you already use
most past participles without knowing that they’re called past
participles!
Verb Infinitive Present Participle Past Participle
To smile Smiling Smiled
To hang Hanging Hung

Example :
• The woman, smiling and waving, said hello
• Framed and hung, the painting lit up the room
7. Preposition Phrase
A preposition is a word that connects two phrases or ideas
in a sentence. Prepositions are used to specify when,
where, how, and why. The purpose of using a prepositional
phrase is to provide additional information about a noun,
verb, adjective, or adverb.
Example :
• Today is the first day of the month. The first day is part
of the month.
• I take my coffee with milk and sugar. My coffee
includes milk and sugar.
• Yesterday, we met in the auditorium. Where we met
was the auditorium.
• She likes all colors except for yellow. All colors does
not include yellow.
Gerund and present participle phrases are easy to
confuse because they both begin with an -ing word.

Definiton of Clause
What is Clause?

A group of words which consist

of a subject and a predicate.
Clause is divided into two
forms, namely independent clause and
dependent clause.
A clause contains only one
subject and one verb.

Independent Clause

1 Independent

another clause to form a complete
sentence.
Example of Independent Clause :
• My name is Lily.
• I travel extensively.
• I’m visiting China this summer.
• We really love pandas.

subject and a verb.
Has both subject and object. It can stand alone
as a complete sentence because it gives a
complete meaning.
Ex : ‘he is sleeping’

A phrase is a group of words that does not

consist of a subject and predicate.
