At the end of the lesson, students are able to solve the problem based on the
following situation:

A body plan is a particular set of morphological and developmental traits, integrated

into a functional whole the living animal. Features of organism, animal body plans
have evolved over time. Thus, to explore the major features of animal body plans,
similar body forms may have evolved independently in different lineages.

(a) Phylum Arthropoda can be found nearly all habitats of biosphere. By referring to
FIGURE 5, briefly state the unique characteristics of the arthropod as to make
them survive successfully in the biosphere.

FIGURE 5

There are several unique features of Phylum Arthropoda that allow them to survive in
the biosphere effectively. Firstly, they are able to avoid excessive loss of moisture from
their bodies because of their hard chitinous exoskeletons as well as defend the animal
from the predator. It also provides attachment points for muscles to move the
appendages. Next, there are also paired and joint appendages in Phylum Arthropoda
that enable efficient locomotion and versatile movement. Through this, they are able to
have a number of functions and gestures. They also have segmented body, several
segments are modified as tagmata that specialize in feeding, walking or swimming
tasks. Because of cephalization, they also have a number of respiratory organs,
allowing them to function in diverse conditions. They are capable of directing the air to
the tissues, thereby allowing a high metabolic rate. Besides, they have highly even
sensory organs such as eyes, touch, smell, hearing, balancing and chemistry have
been developed a receptor that helps them to warn themselves to any ever after
Phylum Arthropoda undergoes metamorphosis, using multiple sources for both larvae
and adults, so reduces intraspecific rivalry environmental changes.
(b) Phylum Chordata share a set of derive characters, through many species
possess some of these traits only during embryonic development. Briefly state
the unique characteristic for the chordate in the FIGURE 6.

FIGURE 6

Chordates include all animal (backbone) vertebrates and some invertebrates. The
characteristics of chordates are based on the following: first, notochord presence.
Notochord is a chord a flexible rod between the nerve cord and the digestive tube. It
provides skeletal support for much of the life of a chordate. Secondly, the cleft
pharyngeal. What pharynx open through multiple slits on the outside of an animal.
Enable water to enter the exit and mouth without going through the whole digestive tract
of the body. Act as suspension in invertebrate’s device for feeding. Modified for
gaseous exchange in aquatic vertebrates as gills break. Terrestrial in vertebrates,
before birth or hatching, die. Third, the presence of the hollow dorsal nerve cord.
Fourthly, the tail of the post-anal. It requires skeletal components and muscles that help
drive many aquatic organisms into the water. Ultimately, myotomes.
