UNDERSYANDING THE SELF

BY: NARUL, ALJEMAR J.

LESSON I. ACTIVITY 1. SPEECH WRITING

 Hello my name is Aljemar J, Narul. I live in Suterville Zamboanga city but originally I’m from
Tawi-Tawi, and I was born in Pulao Pinang Hinbah Tandubas Tawi-Tawi at agust 28, 2000 as
of now I am in the first year of college studying Drafting Technologies, at ZCSPC. I’d like to
tell you a little bit about my background, interest, achievements and my goals, I was born in
a small island called Pulao Pinang. Pulao Pinang located at Tawi-Tawi under the municipality
of Tandubas,
 I spent my first 18 years of life in Taqi-Tawi. When I arrived here in Zamboanga city I heard
some people talking negativity about Tawi-Tawi, I want you to know that Tawi-Tawi is a
peaceful island, they only wanted a freedom not gun.
 Before moving here in with my siblings I was sad and lonely cause this is not my Home town
and I don’t have friends yet. I was enrolled at Baliwasan Senior High School Stand Alone in
the year of 2018. During my Senior high school I took Technical Drafting (TVL) program. At
first I was upset of my strand, but lately I realized being Draftsman is rare to find. I got a lot
of friends and we build a lot of memories, but sadly we don’t have a final and formal
goodbye because of hard lockdown due to Covid 19.
 I like playing volleyball, basketball, soccer, Badminton, I feel free when I’m playing those
sports. Sometimes I got injured, but this won’t stop me to do what’s make me happy.
 My everyday activities included doing modules works, plying mobile legends, not girls heart,
watching Television, Anime, and go to Masjid. Sometimes I just doing Salah (prayer) at
home.
ANALYSIS

Where you able to write a speech? Did you find it easy or difficult? State your reasons below.

EASY Well, it is not that difficult as it seems. All it

requires is to take out time for your self. Go to a
quite place or just sit in one place without
thinking about any works that you might have to
complete and ask a very simple yet very
powerful question, “who am i?. take your time,
ponder over the question. You will see the
answer cover everything from the person you are
you are to the person you aspire to become stuffs
you want to do in your life, your plans and many
more.
DIFFICULT
APPLICATION

Explain the statements from the following philosophers, write your answer on the space provided.

1. “I think therefore I am” – Rene Descartes

He found that he could not doubt that he himself existed, as he was the one doing the douting
in the first place.

2. “ The unexamined life is not worth living”- Socrates.

Through this statement, Socrates means that an unexamined human life is deprived of the
meaning and purpose of existence. To become fully human means to use our highly developed
faculty of thought to raise our existence above that of mere beasts. For if we don’t think, we are
no more than animals, simply eating, sleeping, working and procreating.

3. “He who is not a good servant will not be a good master”- Plato
So we see why bad servants aren’t inclined to become good masters, why good servants tend to
make good masters, why good employees tend to make good manger. Those who do the work
know the work that must be done. Those who do the work know how the work is done best.
Those who do the work appreciate the work that’s done.
REFLECTION:
Choose one philosopher whose concept of the self is closely related to your own notion or life
experience. Explain the reasons of your choice. The essay should not be less than 100 words .

PLATO__

I remember growing up through the years, and I was always taught that once you die, your soul
would float up to heaven and that’s how you live the rest of your days. This was my conception
of the self; you would live out your days on earth but ascend to heaven once it was your time.
Plato’s conception of the self is different from mine and it’s very interesting. Plato describes that
your soul is immortal and that your body is just an obstacle for your body, that you gain all of
this wisdom from when your soul finally leaves your body. This is very different from what I was
taught during my childhood, and I think that Plato gives you a different way of thinking towards
the body and the soul.

Answer the following question honestly and write your answers in the space provided.

1. Explain top (5) words that best describe your personality. (10 points)

1 . Confident – my confidence came from my vision. I a, a big believer that if you Have a very clear
vision of where you want to go, then the rest of it is much easier.

2. Pride – I feel a scene of pride after solving a challenging problem.

3. Spoiled – I was spoiled and I was arrogant. I was very demanding, had a overblown Image of who I
was and got a reputation for being difficult. And rightfully so.

4. Faithful – Being faithful to god gives us great peace and assurance that, we will be brought through
by his promises of blessings and the reward of eternal life heaven.

5. Imaginative – I am alone but I am happy with my imaginative thoughts because my imaginative

though bring a smile on my face like a friend and leave tears in my eyes… charot!!
2. Elaborate influences of your family to your development as an individual.

> well a family pretty gives me physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental support in my development
from childhood until adulthood. Well this applies for everyone no matter how messed up it is. It
influences my character regardless of external factors like friends. From my family I learn how to deal
with different kinds of people as each family has a different character which needs to coped with. From
my parents I learn how to handle a relationship with a spouse since they conduct well with each other.
From my siblings I learn how to respect the elders because as the last born I face difficulties in
controlling my attitude because I have a bat manners called spoiled brat.

3. Enumerate social pressures that help shape one self.

> The social pressure of “being successful is normal, being failure is not.”
This social pressure made me stronger and proud of what I am or who I am. Except it caused me a lot of
grief and depression to a point where, if I am being honest, I was suicidal.

Would I have wanted it otherwise?

No, not at all.

If I didn’t fight this social pressure I wouldn’t have realized that there was no “social pressure” and the
only person I was in a “fight” with was myself.

4. Justify whether there is an aspect of oneself you would like to change.

> Anxiety.

I have suffered from this for so long. And the cause/trigger points of my anxiety are sometimes so trivial,
so unimportant, that after my feelings settle down – I actually feel like a kid.

Examples of meaningless things that trigger me:

When I am angry with someone, and they don’t pick up my calls, I stared to think I have lose them
forever. And that it is the end of our friendship which leads to so much of unhealthy stress.

If someone annoys me, I get anxious thinking about how I am going to confront them the next time I
meet them/ talk to them. I have a mental flowchart – what if X does not talk to me? What will I do then?
What if X talks to me? What will I do in that case?
Choose one of your favorite individual or family photo. Based on the pictures. Write an essay on how
culture has shaped your self-concept. The essay should not be less than 100 words.

In my early childhood I believe learning was based on cause and effect if I do this, then that will be the
outcome. This creates me “Beliefs” that become habituated. They become ingrained in your world view,
this is called conditioning, and it has an effect on your behavior that lasts a lifetime. Growing up I moved
into a wider social circle that impacted on my beliefs, school taught me that life is competitive, that we
are not born equal, that life is unfair, and not everyone is deserving of trust. Boy scouts taught me that
independence and self-reliance are critical skills, Youth theatre taught me about alternative
perspectives, motivation, dissimulation, and the importance of communication. All of these experiences
created the set of beliefs, attitude, approaches, and behavior that define me.

Definition of self:
Self stands for “I” which means you are.
Body and Mind are “what” you are because you always claim. My body and my Mind meaning both of
these belongs to you.
There is temporary “You” as that thinking self.
And, there is a permanent self in the form of presence of the intensity of individual awareness. Entrapped

It is through awareness, that true self, which makes the thinking mind awareness and conscious, when it
observes, watches and witnesses it’s own perceptual temporary self flowing recklessly in thoughts.
