Assignment 1

Q1. Determine the composition of equilibrium vapor over a liquid mixture consisting of
10 mol % water, 50 mol % acetic acid and 40 mol % acetone at 80 oC, assuming that
the components obey Raoult's Law.
[The Vapor pressure of the components at 80 oC are water -47.33 kPa, acetic acid
-27.32 kPa and acetone -219.77 kPa].

Q2. A mixture of benzene and toluene boils at 95 oC under a constant pressure of 101.3
kPa. Assuming ideal behaviour (Raoult's Law), calculate the composition of the boiling
mixture.
[Vapour pressures of pure toluene and pure benzene at 95 oC are 155.56 kPa and
63.98 kPa, respectively].

Q3. The vapor pressure of n-hexane and n-octane are given in the following table.
Assuming that Raoult's law and Dalton's law applies construct t-x-y* and x-y* plots for
the system at a total pressure of 101.3 kPa.

T 0C 68.7 79.4 93.3 107.2 121.1 125.7

p-Hexane 101.3 136.6 197.3 283.9 399.9 455.9

(kPa)

p-Octane 16.1 23.1 37.1 57.8 87.2 101.3
