TUTORIAL 2

1. For the system ethyl ethanoate(1)/n-heptane(2) at 70oC (343.15K),

ln 1 = 0.95x22 ln 2 = 0.95x12
P1sat = 79.8 kPa P2sat = 40.5 kPa

Assuming the validity of Eq. (10.5),

a) Make a BUBL P calculation for t/T = 70oC/343.15 K, x1 = 0.05

b) Make a DEW P calculation for t/T = 70oC/343.15 K, y1 = 0.05
c) Show that azeotrope exist at t/T = 70oC/343.15 K and determine the azeotrope
composition and pressure

2. A liquid mixture of cyclohexanone(1)/phenol(2) for which x1 = 0.6 is in equilibrium with its

vapor at 144oC (417.15K). Determine the equilibrium pressure P and vapor composition y 1
from the following information:

ln 1 = Ax22 ln 2 = Ax12
At 144 C (417.15K), P1 = 75.2 and P2sat = 31.66 kPa
o sat

The system forms an azeotrope at 144oC (417.15K) for which x1az = y1az = 0.294
