Tutorial VIII-IX

1. We need to design a distillation column for separating 1-chlorobutane (1) and

chlorobenzene (2). Vapor Pressure of the pure species are given by the Antoine’s
equation:

2826 . 26
ln Psat
1 =13 .96−
T +224 . 10
3295 .12
ln Psat
2 =13 .9926−
T +217 .55 Pisat’s in kPa and T in C

For the design purpose we need p-x-y data for the above system. Obtain p-x-y table at
50C (minimum 7 data points). It is known that the system is non ideal in nature and
activity coefficients are given by, ln γ 1= A x 22 and ln γ 2= A x 21, with A=1.23.

2. An experimental determination of a VLE state for the ethanol/toluene system gave the
following results: standard Vapor Pressure at 45C, ethanol = 173 mm Hg, toluene =
75.4 mm Hg, x1 = 0.3; y1 = 0.634; PT = 183 mm Hg. Calculate (i) the liquid phase
activity coefficients (ii) What pressure would be exerted by the mixture having liquid
composition 0.5 at 45C ?

3. Check weather the following system will form an azeotrope or not ? Ethanol
(1)/Benzene (2) at T=900 C . Given that 1n1 = 1.66X22. If yes , find the azeotropc
composition and pressure.

4. A binary system of species 1 and 2 consists of vapor and liquid phases in equilibrium
at temp. T. The overall mole fraction of species 1 in the system is Z 1 = 0.65. At temp.
T, (a) 1n 1 = 0.67 X22 and 1n 2 = 0.67 X12 (b) P1sat = 32.27 kPa and P2sat = 73.14 kPa.
Assuming system follows modified Raoult’s law. Show whether or not the system
exhibits an azeotrope. If yes , find the azeotropc composition and pressure.

5. Check whether the system ethyle ethanoate(1)/n-heptane(2) at 343.15 K forms

2 2
azeotrope or not ? Given that for this system,(i) ln γ 1 =0 .95 x 2 and ln γ 2 =0 . 95 x 1 (ii)
P1sat=79.80 kPa and P2sat=40.50 kPa.

6. Water (1)/ hydrazine (2) system forms an azeotrope containing 58.5% (mole)
hydrazine at 393 K and 101.3 kPa. The vapor pressure of hydrazine at 393 K is
124.76 kPa. With this much information determine equilibrium vapor composition for
a liquid solution containing 20% (mol) hydrazine. The ratio of vapor pressure of water
to that of hydrazine is 1.6 and may be assumed to remain constant in the temperature
range involved. It is also given that, normal boiling points of water is 100C and that
2
of hydrazine is 114C. Assume that the system is well represented by ln γ 1 =Ax 2 .
