Populism refers to political activities or ideas that claim to promote the interests and opinions of
ordinary people.
Populism is a political approach that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns
are disregarded by established elite groups.
If we want to introduce change politics in the country, we do want to keep abreast of the dynastic
leadership patterns and see to that extent we can better educate our citizens, our voters on the negative
implications of these dynasties and then to try and support those immediate reforms that can make a
big difference immediately but as well as the longer term investments that we need in order to reap
dividends not just for our economy but also for our political system and I’m referring to stronger and
more inclusive education health and social protection and then finally even as we see that we’re
investing in education, we’re investing in health, we’re reducing poverty even though it’s sort of slow,
that the pattern of inequality that we face in the country is still something that we need to address in a
very big way if we’re to see the risk of populism contained and mitigated over time otherwise. It appears
that if you look at the international evidence and also evidence here in our country that the risk of
populism is going to be real and it’s going to be palpable as long as many of these structural inequalities
remain.
Alternative leaders – make the citizen stronger rather than showing their weaknesses.
False promise of populist
1. In your own understanding, describe what is Political Dynasty and Populism
Political Dynasty refers to the situation wherein two or more family member are occupying
elected positions on the office or local government. This political dynasty has been established
many year ago specially on the provincial areas because the cities or so called “lalawigan” there
is a small area wherein the elected official are coming from the elite family or group in that area.
Political dynasty comes from two forms which are the Thin-dynasty and Fat-dynasty. Thin-
dynasty refers to the “sunod-sunod”, meaning the elected official comes from the family who
has background in the politics or even one of the member is already been elected. While the fat-
dynasty refers to the “sabay-sabay”, meaning two family member simultaneously serving in the
office or local government. As political dynasty continuously emerge, the economy and social
health of the people will not change because the elected officer have the same principle and
interest that only them will benefit and it will cause great poverty.
Populism refers to political activities or ideas that claim to promote the interests and opinions of
ordinary people. This populism is very common especially here in Manila or in every part of the
country when the election is near around the corner. Many candidates pursue and convince or
persuade the ordinary people in every part of the country to vote for them in exchange of
raising the interests and needs of the people. Populism is a political approach that strives to
appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite
groups. But the elites or the candidates take advantage of this populism especially on the
situation that they are already elected. They turn a blind eye on the promises that they make on
the people who actually need those promises because it might help them to survive the day of
living. Populism is very effective on this kind of era where there is existing social division among
individuals wherein the elite take advantage of the interests and need of the ordinary and poor
people.
2. With the general election just around the corner, what are your takeaways in Dean Ron’s
Mendoza’s discussion?
Youth-participation in nation building. Youth are the hope of the nation. With the growing
population of the youth especially nowadays, they serve as the voice of every people in the
country to demand for change in this bad service that the government gives to us. As the
election draws near, many youth or so called millennials are already registered voters to
exercise their rights and it is very important to do it because as millennial itself, I have the voice
and power to elect and choose the new leaders of my country that will serve and gives us the
needs and the rights that we deserve. SK or Sangguniang Kabataan have also great influence to
the youth as they might serve as an example to everyone to vote wisely and never waver their
principles and dignity because it is very important to have new leaders that will actually listen to
their people.
Looming social divide and inequality among people. As Dean Ron Mendoza said, there is an
existing social class and inequality among people until this day and this is because of the elite
who take advantage of the people around them and the situation they are in. One common
example of this is when the election is near, all of the candidates who belongs to the elite family
reach the poor and ordinary people in order to say sweet things and promise something in order
to gain their trust and support. In this situation, the populism is happening but when the
election is done and they gain their desired position in the government, the promises they made
to the people are already bury along those sweet words and sentences they make during the
election. If this social divide and inequality among people remains, the economy and social
health of the people will not improve and it will only cause great poverty because the privilege
and the power belongs to the elite who is not really interested on the poor people because of
the social class that is existing. In order to mitigate it, as a youth who holds the power to elect,
we should elect new leaders that is capable of listening to it people and ignores personal
interest because this is the start of mitigating this problem.
Political dynasty is the cause of great poverty until now because most of the people that has
been elected on certain positions are family member and they are after only on their interest
and not to the needs and interest of their people. With this, we need alternative leaders or new
leaders that will surely listen to its people and to mitigate the effect of the long run political
dynasty of the family member. Political dynasty serve no purpose but only to cause poverty and
self-desire on those elites who are in position without even concerning on their people and
country.
