Syllabus:
Environmental systems – natural and engineered; General requirement for water supply, sources, quality and
quantity of water, intake, pumping and transportation of water; Basics of water quality parameters: Physical,
chemical and biological characteristics of water and their significance, Environmental legislations and
standards; Chemical reaction kinetics, Schematic and flow diagram of water treatment plant; Engineered
systems for water treatment: sedimentation, coagulation, filtration, disinfection and adsorption; Water
distribution system: Network of pipes, Distribution reservoir; Generation and collection of sewage
(wastewater), Sewerage systems, Design of sewerage system, Schematic and flow diagram of sewage treatment
plant (STP); Primary, secondary and tertiary treatment of sewage (wastewater); Basics of microbiology,
Biological wastewater treatment systems: Aerobic processes - activated sludge process and its modifications,
trickling filter, Anaerobic Processes - anaerobic reactor – Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor,
Wastewater recycling and reuse, Sludge handling, treatment and disposal.

Module-wise Syllabus:
Module I: Introduction to the course; Environmental systems – natural and engineered

Module II: Water and wastewater quantity estimation – General requirement for municipal water supply,
sources, quantity of water, population forecast, water demand for various purposes, estimation of municipal
wastewater generation, Variation in water demand and wastewater generation
Module III: Water supply and distribution system – Intake structure, pumping and transportation of water,
water distribution system - distribution reservoir, network of pipes
Module IV: Wastewater collection system – Collection of sewage (wastewater), Sewerage systems, Estimation of
storm water flow, design and laying of sewers, sewer appurtenances
Module V: Basics of water quality parameters – Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of water and
wastewater, Environmental legislations and standards – water, soil (irrigation), air and noise pollution
Module VI: Chemical reaction kinetics – Reaction rate and order, effect of temperature on reaction rate, analysis
of reactor system - Batch reactor and continuous-flow reactor, completely-mixed reactor and plug-flow reactor
Module VII: Unit operations in water treatment plant – Schematic and flow diagram of water treatment plant,
various processes of water treatment - sedimentation, coagulation, filtration, disinfection and adsorption
Module VIII: Unit operations in sewage treatment plant (STP) – Schematic and flow diagram of sewage
treatment plant (STP), Primary, secondary and tertiary treatment of sewage (wastewater), Basics of
microbiology, biological wastewater treatment systems - Aerobic processes - activated sludge process and its
modifications, trickling filter, Anaerobic Processes - anaerobic reactor – Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket
