Structural Assesment Report
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This report is prepared to assess the structural condition of an existing building located at Wellawatta,
which is to be used as an Educational Building by ACBT. Most of the spaces in the existing building will
be used as class room building while there will be few office spaces for the administration staff . It is
proposed to have a light weight roof (most probably a steel roof structure) over the existing fourth floor
slab, so that the space beneath the roof can be used as an interior space.
The reasons for the Structural assessment are as follows.
(A). To ensure that the Structure is adequately safe now and will it remain so in the future.
(B).To ensure it can be used for intended purpose (as a class room building) now and in the future with a
appropriate retrofitting scheme if necessary.
2.2.1 COLUMN
There are no apparent defects in the structural columns. (See Figure 2.1).
2.2.2 SLABS
From the visual observations, it can be seen that slabs soffit is not perfectly leveled (Construction
Defect)..There is no signs of flexural cracks in the slabs.
There is a severe spallng of concrete and reinforcement corrosion in Balcony slabs at the rear side of the
building. (See Figure 2.2)
From Visual Observations, the structure does not exhibit any sign of distress due to self weight (dead
loads) of the structure. However the performance of the structure due to occupant loads ( to be used as
class room building) to be evaluated after conducting following tests to establish the material strengths.
B-Steel
B.1 The position, cover of the steel reinforcement with Cover Meter Tests.
(1). Structure does not shows any signs of distress due to dead loads (self weight) at present,
however the adequacy of the structure due to loads imposed by the function (live loads) has to
be evaluated by caring out material testing of structural elements as set out in Section 3 of the
Report.
(2). Spalling of Cover/ Exposure of Slab Soffit Reinforcement should be repaired on immediate basis
to ensure the durability of the Building.
