Episode 6 provides opportunities for me to have a more in-depth study of factors that
affect the development of a learner. Focus will be on the early experiences and characteristics
of the learner as describe by the family and other significant others.

MY LEARNING ESSENTIALS

Urie Bronfenbrenner ‘s Bio-ecological model presents the learner within the context of
layers of relationship system that make up the learner’s environment. The layers are:

 Microsystem includes the structure such as one’s family, school and neighborhood.

 Mesosystem is the connection between the structures in the microsystem.

 Exosystem is the bigger social system which includes the city government, the
workplace and the mass media.
 Macrosystem is the outermost layer which includes cultural values, customs and law.

 Chronosystem is the element of time, patterns of stability and pacing of the child’s
everyday life.

MY MAP

To realize my Intended Learning outcomes, I will work my way through these steps:

 Select a learner from the class whom you have observe

 Interview the teacher about the characteristics.
 Conduct a home visit to your selected learner’s residence.
 Interview the parents about
- the rules they implement at home concerning their child’s schooling.
- the learner’s activities and behavior while at home.
 Describe the family in terms of
- number of siblings.
- number of siblings in school.
 Identify the factors in the home environment that might affect the learner’s
 school performance.

Field Study 1: The Learner’s Development and Environment

 Reflect on how a teacher can communicate effectively with the home.

General Instruction: Use the activity form provided for you to document your
observations.

MY TOOLS
Read the following carefully before you begin to observe. Then write your observation
report.

AN OBSERVATION/ INTERVIEW GUIDE FOR HOME-SCHOOL LINK

Interview the Learner

1. Make a general observation of the learner. Describe him in each domains of
development:
 Physical-body built and height (thin, chubby, underweight, overweight), level of
physical activity (fast, slow, lethargic, active, etc.)
 Social-interaction with teachers and classmates (loner, shy, sociable, friendly,
gets into fight, liked by others, etc.)
 Emotional (moods, temperament, cries easily, loses temper, happy, shows
enthusiasm, excited, indifferent, etc.)
 Cognitive (appears to understand lessons, copes with the lessons, excels, lags
behind, shows reasoning skills, turns in assignments and requirements, etc.)

Interview the Teacher

1. What are the most noticeable characteristics of the learner? (emotional disposition,
behavior and discipline, sense of responsibility, study habits, academic performance,
relationship with peers, relationship with adults, social adjustment)
2. How does the teacher communicate with the parents? How often? What do they
discuss? Agree on?

Interview with Parents

1. Conduct a home visit. Once there, observe the home set-up. (Home is orderly, family
pictures in the living room.
2. Use the Interview Questions on the next page. Just ask the questions with which you
feel comfortable.

Field Study 1: The Learner’s Development and Environment

Conclusions
Write here your conclusions based on your findings.

The term home and school are very allied in each other. These two places have a big role in each
learners’, it can give the learner an ideas, thoughts, theories as well as information’s, not only for the
four corners of the room but also it can teach each and everyone how life is very elated, both of them
can impart each learner to active not only physically, mentally, socially, emotionally and also spiritually
aspect. Therefore, I conclude, that home-school connection of the learner is really helps a lot in the
development of each learner.

Recommendations
Write your recommendations.

My recommendation to the learner is she must interact to others for as she will have a lot of
friends. It is normal to be cautious during first time they met, but we do not know what others
think, some of them are very mindful in the first impression”, so all we need to do is talk to
them with respect and do not be shy when they are asking about you.

MY ANALYSIS

Your findings and recommendations in the Learner Development Profile will help
you answer the questions here.

1. From your home visit and interview, what do you think is the style of parenting
experienced by the learner? Explain your answer.
Authoritative is the style of parenting experienced by the learner. The parent of the
learner especially the mother is strict when it comes answering the modules of her
daughter. She is very particular in the time. But all I can say is both parents of Juvy are
very endearing and supportive to their child.

2.Relating your data with what you learned from child development, what family
factors do you think contribute to the development and over-all adjustment of the
learner in school.

As I relate the data that I gathered through interview, I may say that a family is
one of the essential parts of the learner’s motivation. It is greatly affecting the
over all growth of each learners. if his/her family positively encourage and
motivated their children therefore, positive response will give back by their
children. These things will be the guide of their child to be more actively
participated the things or activity that being done in their school.

Field Study 1: The Learner’s Development and Environment

3. Does the communication between the home-school have an effect on the learner? If
yes, what are these effects?
Definitely yes, because as we recall what elders taught us that, if what is the attitude
and even the way that talks the children in their home is definitely it will the same in the
school. Through their behaviors, gestures as well as on how they communicate to
others it will be the guided both home and school. And the effects of this is the child will
be supervised well whether he/she in their home or in school. The very

MY REFLECTIONS/ INSIGHTS

1. Reflect on your family’s orientation. What can you say about your parents’ way of
disciplining you? Do they have rules? How did it affect you as a person and as a
learner?
Authoritarian is the type of parenting that I experienced. Both of my parents are very strict on
me because I am the eldest among my brothers. There’s a lot of rules that they impart to me.
They have high expectations regarding on my academic matters. It really affects me to mold as
a person because of that experiences, it is very helpful in each one of us to have a very serious
type of parent. I am so blessed that they are parents, because of them I really appreciate what
life it is. And very grateful that every problem, circumstances as well as issues that we may face
is absolutely granted and have an enough solution on that kind of difficulties.

3. As a future teacher, how would you establish good home-school collaboration? How can
you work well with the parents? How can you help them? How can they help you?

As a future educator, I will establish good home-school collaboration by ensuring

that all of my students/learners’ will apply what they learned in the school to their
homes. To collaborate to with their parents is I will going to have communications
regarding on their child. I can help them through giving advices, and they may
help me through elaborating further what are those things that going to be learned
with or without on the learning materials.
