MODULE TWO

TEACHING IN ELEMENTARY SCIENCE

MODULE 2

Activity 1.

Based on the sample above. Create a process skills activity on grade 5 science.
Activity 2: Based on the process skills above critic the work. (Suggest comments)

Effective instruction and assessment as it relate to science inquiry.

Activirty 3: Read the journal downloaded on our group chat and answer the following questions and
email it.

The Content of Science: Conceptual Learning Students will identify and classify different types of
concepts

Summary :
This study investigated the effectiveness of inquiry based instruction in improving the
mathematics and science achievement of fifth graders in a rural elementary school in
south Alabama as measured by standardized achievement scores. Standardized
achievement test scores in mathematics and science over a 6-year time period were
analyzed in order to compare
the group percentile rank of fifth graders in mathematics and science when teacher-
directed instruction was utilized with the group percentile rank of fifth graders in
science and mathematics education following the application of inquiry based classroom
instruction.

Reflection :
Inquiry-based learning helps students make their own connections about what they
learn. Their curiosity helps them engage and gain a deeper understanding of topics and
content, instead of primarily memorizing and recalling rules, ideas or formulas.Through
inquiry, students engage in research around interesting ideas and essential questions.
Questioning, critical thinking, and the creative development of new knowledge through
inquiry are as important (if not more so) to learning as information finding through
research

Application :
As a future teacher i will ensure that students can access strong research materials to
answer their questions, as well as activities like dramatizations, presentations, and role
plays that help them unearth new materials.
It is critical as a teacher to provide an opportunity for scientific inquiry as the process of
a scientific inquiry builds trust in the classroom, allows the students to take risks with
their ideas and learnings. Skills and habits of mind are developed in both the student
and the teacher.

Activity 4: Read this journal downloaded on our GC and answer the question and email it.

Construction of concept maps and concept webs will be presented as a strategy for concept
development.
Definition:
A concept map or conceptual diagram is a diagram that depicts suggested relationships between concepts.
[1] Concept maps may be used by instructional designers, engineers, technical writers, and others to
organize and structure knowledge.

A concept map typically represents ideas and information as boxes or circles, which it connects with
labeled arrows in a downward-branching hierarchical structure. The relationship between concepts can be
articulated in linking phrases such as "causes", "requires", or "contributes to".[2]

The technique for visualizing these relationships among different concepts is called concept mapping.
Concept maps have been used to define the ontology of computer systems, for example with the object-
role modeling or Unified Modeling Language formalism.

Sample of concept map:

Summary :
The paper gives insight into a few concepts of teaching and learning, especially at the higher levels of
education. Many countries make it mandatory for teachers to undergo formal course on education
principles where the concepts of teaching and learning are taught. However, this exposure to teachers is
non-existent for professional teachers who enter into teaching profession without any exposure to
formal training in education. This sometimes may act as a constraint in the process of effective teaching
and learning process

Reflection :

There has been a change from the Traditional role to the Modern role in the present context. The
learning increases when the teacher builds on the previous experience of the student. However,
individual’s learning differs and each individual learns at his or her own pace. Identifying the slow
learners and individual attention of the teacher may be required. Thus, effective learning is to a great
extent based on experiences. Direct experiences are student centered and participation in problem
solving. While in indirect experience, the contents are carefully designed and organized by teacher.

Application:

‘As a future tacher we tend to think that teaching is all about teachers and our role; in fact themost
important aspects of the educational process are the students and what they learn.’This leads us to
consider what we mean by 'learning'. As you read the educational literature and, more specifically,
educational psychology, you find many differences in theories and definitions.

Activity 5: From the two journal read. Construct at least one concept map from the chosen
journal.
