 The Power Supply (See Annexure 2)
 The Breadboard (See Annexure 1)
 Resistors (See Annexure 2)

III. Theory and Background

This lab has two parts, in first part student will learn how to use basic lab equipment while in
second part student have to identify the value of resistor using Color Coding and have to
compare it with the measure (using multimeter)

Figure 1: Color Codes of Resistor

Table 1.1: Color Code's Value

Digit Color Tolerance Color Band 5 colors

0 Black 5% Gold 1% Brown
1 Brown 10% Silver 0.1% Red
2 Red 20% No color band 0.01% Orange
3 Orange 0.001% Yellow
4 Yellow
5 Green
6 Blue
7 Violet
8 Grey
9 White

R= (1st Digit)(2nd Digit)(Number of Zeros=3rdDigit)± tolerance

Figure 2: Digital Multimeter
The button is pressed
to measure resistance.

Notice that for measuring both voltage

and resistance, the positive (red) pin is
connected in the same socket

Consider your DMM and the pictures given above. What is the Maximum
value of voltage and current that the DMM can measure?
Answer:- Our Multi meter can measure Maximum Voltage up to 100V and
maximum Current up to 20A
IV. Procedure
You will be explained important functionalities and procedure of using different equipment
available in the lab which you will be using in subsequent labs.

Figure A Figure B
Consider Figure A and B above. Utilizing what you have learned in this lab and in class
about nodes, explain in which configuration the resistor is short or active. Explain.
(Refer to Annexure 2 for further help)
In Figure A as we have studied that nodes in a column are interconnected with each
other as we see the resistor in figure A is connected to the nodes belong to same column
without any gap so we can also say that it is connected in parallel to the circuit, the
resistance of wire is very less than the resistor So current will prefer to flow through the
wire so No current will flow through the resistor that’s why circuit in figure A is
Short
In Figure B as we have studied that nodes in a column are interconnected with each
other and at the gap they are disconnected as we see the resistor in figure B is
connected to the nodes belong to same column but there is a gap in between the nodes
so these nodes are not similar so current will flow through the resistor that’s why the
circuit in figure B is Active

V. Review Questions

1. How to connect Multi meter to measure voltage in a circuit, In series or In Parallel?

In order to measure Voltage using a Multi meter It should be connected in Parallel to the
circuit whose voltage is to be measure.
2. How to connect Multi meter to measure Current in a circuit, In series or In Parallel?
In order to measure Current using a Multi meter It should be connected in Series to the
circuit whose voltage is to be measure.

3. Ideally how much should be the resistance of Multi meter when measuring voltage in a
circuit?
As we know in order to measure Voltage using Multi meter it should be connected in
parallel to the circuit, as we know current is divided in parallel circuits so the resistance
of multimeter should be very high(approaches to Infinity) it should not change the
amount of current going through the element between those two points where it is
connected to measure voltage.
4. Ideally how much should be the resistance of Multi meter when measuring current in a
circuit?
As we know in order to measure Current using Multimeter it should be connected in
series to the circuit as it has been used for measuring current that’s why its resistance
should be very low (approaches to zero) so that it do not disturbs the current flowing
through the circuit.
