I.

Rationale

The line between Education and Learning is getting thinner as the generation pass by; with the traits
of modern society. As well in reading, teaching reading comprehension to non-readers and
frustration level readers today is different from the past. Teachers need to focus on
extensive comprehension instruction with all students, not just successful readers. This action
research investigated two classes of grade one pupils and one class of kindergarten of Malacampa
Elementary School (Main). They have undergone reading assessment test to know their
level of reading performance. This action research discusses the causes and reasons of
reading difficulties of non-readers and frustration level readers. It also presents multiple
strategies that have proved to be successful in a kindergarten and grade one classroom, as well as
strategies used and found to be successful by other teachers. As new best practices in
reading instruction are developed and researched, teaching strategies need to evolve as well.

II. Problem Statement

This study aims to make an action plan for the frustration reading level pupils of grade one
and kindergarten class of Malacampa Elementary School and answer the following
questions:

1. What is the reading level of kindergarten and grade one pupils?

2. Why pupils in kindergarten and grade one were at frustration level?
3. How pupils in kindergarten and grade one will be helped by the teacher to address the
difficulty in learning to read.
4. How does the academic performance of frustrated readers be described?

III. Methodology

 The researchers will use Mathewson’s (1994) model, which is based on a

tripartite view of attitude, suggests that attitude toward reading
encompasses evaluative beliefs about reading, feelings about reading, and
readiness to read. These three components in Mathewson’s model are
expected to influence intention to read or continued reading, as well as
further affect aspects of reading behavior such as attention, strategy use,
and reading comprehension.
 This action research will use descriptive correlational method. Descriptive
research involves description and interpretation of conditions that currently
exist. The main aims are to describe the nature of condition as it exists at
the time of study and to explore the causes of the particular situation.
