Introduction

A server is a computer designed to process requests and deliver data to another computer
over the internet or a local network. A well-known type of server is a web server where
web pages can be accessed over the internet through a client like a web browser.

Server Normal Functions

Server normal functions are the basic software features that comes preinstalled and pre-
configured along with the server operating system during the installation process.

The current configuration of server normal functions, also have the option to modify its
values by providing computer information, updating and customizing the server. It also
helps evaluate if the server is running smoothly with no errors, and if there are no
unexpected behaviors, such as network connectivity problems.

ACTIVITY:

Directions: Write your answers below.

1. What is a server?
2. What are the normal functions of a server?

Competency: Configure network services (TLE_IACSS9-12SUCS-IIIf-j-IVa-j-38)
Objective: Configure Windows Server 2012 R2 and network connections

Concept Notes:
WINDOWS SERVER INITIAL CONFIGURATION TASKS:

The Initial Configuration Tasks (ICT) is the first page after logging on to a clean install of
Windows Server.

Activation - helps verify that your copy of Windows is genuine, and that it has not been
used on more computers than the Microsoft Software License Terms allow. Activation
helps prevent software counterfeiting.

Activate Windows - shows the activation status for the installed operating system. Not
activated is displayed if an administrator has not provided a product key or has provided a
product key but has not yet activated Windows either online or by telephone. Activated is
displayed, together with the Windows product ID, if an administrator has provided the
correct product key and activated the operating system.

Set time zone - field is where you can change the date, time and time zone settings of the
system clock in which the computer is located.

Configure networking - sets up network connections that provide connectivity between

your computer and the Internet, a network, or another computer. If first time in installing
the server, then provide the name of the computer.

Three Programs That Enable Automatic Updating and Feedback:

1. Windows automatic updating checks the Microsoft Update Website for available
updates for your computer’s operating system, and depending on your preferences, can
install the updates automatically, or wait to install updates until you have approved them
for installation.

• Windows Error Reporting allows Windows to send descriptions of problems on your

server to Microsoft and look for steps you can take to solve them. Windows Error
Reporting is enabled by default, and the default setting is “Yes, automatically send
summary reports. Notify me if there are possible solutions to the problem.”

• Customer Experience Improvement Program collects statistical information about

your system configuration, the performance of some components of Windows, and certain
types of events. The
recommended and default setting is “Yes, I want to participate in the Windows Server
CEIP.”

2. Download and install updates check for the latest software updates for the currently
installed operating system manually.

• Add roles wizard lets you install and configure the roles, or primary functions, you want
the server to perform, such as file sharing with the File Services role.

• Add features lets you install the features, or supporting functions, you want the server to
perform, such as backing up files with the Windows Server Backup feature.

• Enable Remote Desktop allows other users on a network to connect to the computer by
providing the computer’s name or IP address, and typically, logon credentials. Connected
users see the remote
computer’s desktop and can use its installed programs as if they are working on a local
computer.

3. Configure Windows Firewall is turned on by default. Roles, role services, and features
are installed with appropriate firewall settings.

ACTIVITY:

Directions:
I. Identification: Identify the statement as described in each item. Write your answer on the space
provided.
__________ 1. Helps verify that your copy of Windows is genuine
__________ 2. Provides connectivity between your computer and the Internet, a network, or
another computer
__________ 3. Allows Windows to send descriptions of problems on your server
__________ 4. Turned on by default
__________ 5. A window that initially pops up after the server operating system finishes its
startup process
II. True or False: On the space provided, write True if the statement is correct and False if it is
wrong.
__________ 1. The enable automatic updating and feedback link lets you check for the latest
software updates for the currently installed operating system manually.
__________ 2. Things like Windows Aero 3D user interface and multimedia features are
installed and/or enabled by default.
__________ 3. The default setting of Windows Error Reporting is “Yes automatically send
summary reports. Notify me if there are possible solutions to the problem.”
__________ 4. Add roles lets you install features, or supporting functions, you want the server to
perform, such as backing up files with the Windows Server Backup feature.
__________ 5. Enable Remote Desktop allows other users on a network to connect to the
computer by providing the computer’s name or IP address, and typically, logon credentials.

Concept Notes:
PROVIDING COMPUTER NAME
By providing a computer name, you may find the server easier to access remotely and
easier to recognize in reports and logs if you assign it a name that is meaningfully useful.

Steps to change or update the automatically assigned computer name:

1. Left click “Start”, right click “Computer” and left click “Properties”.
