PRONUNCIATION MASTERY

INITIALS

34 syllables in Chinese do not contain any initial. These are indicated with a ø symbol. They
are listed below:

a, ai, ao, an, ang, e, en eng, er, o, ou, yi, ya, yao, ye, you, yan, yang, yin, ying, yong, wu, wa, wo,
wei, wai, wan, wang, weng, yu, yue, yuan, yun

EASY INITIALS
The easy initials have no major distinguishable difference from English, which means there is
not much need to put nearly as much attention on them compared to the “Tougher” or
“Problem” initials. They are listed below along with every simple final they can be combined
with:

la, lo (very rare), le, li, lu, lü

TOUGHER INITIALS
These initial sounds do all exist in English, but they are not pronounced as you might think.
They are worth spending some extra time on to get right. They are listed below along with
every simple final they can be combined with:

D
da, de, di, du
G
ga, ge, gu
T
ta, te, ti, tu
P
pa, po, pi, pu
K
ka, ke, ku
H
ha, he, hu

PROBLEM INITIALS
These are the ones we will focus on most throughout this course. Why? They don’t exist in
English! Not to worry though, we know exactly how to train you on the 3 new tongue positions

Many of these pronunciations are not pronounced how you might assume they are. All will
become clear as we progress through the course together.
