II. Introduction
As life was snuffed out of him, great did he become. Rizal is known to have
given hid life for his beloved muse, the Philippines. In all his undertakings, he knew
his ultimate goal was to lift up his motherland at the risk of his own life.
Understanding what he went through at various stages in his life opens a different
avenue of Rizal being a man first, then a martyr.

Explain
Rizal decided to leave Paris in January 1890 for Brussels for two reasons. (1)
the high costs of living; and (2) because of too many invitations to social gatherings,
which hampered his literary works, particularly his second novel, El Filibusterismo.
In spite of protests from his family and friends, Jose Rizal decided to return
home. On June 26, 1892, accompanied by his sister Lucia, Rizal arrived in Manila.
For the following reasons: (1) he wanted to discuss with Governor-General Eulogio
Despujol about his Borneo project; and (2) to establish La Liga Filipina in the
Philippines.

Elaborate
Rizal started to write his second novel in October 1887, while he was in
Calamba and finished it in Biarritz on March 29, 1891. It took him three years
to write his second novel and the next thing on his mind was to publish the
novel. Owing to his generous friend Valentin Ventura, he was able to print
the novel on September 18, 1891 at Ghent, Belgium (“Jose Rizal:
Correspondence with Fellow Reformists”, 2011).
As the La Liga gained favorable audience on that same night, new officers of
the league were elected.

was abundantly fruitful. He continued to better himself by his practice of
medicine, pursuit of scientific studies, continuing his artistic and literary
works, and widening his knowledge of languages. By this time Rizal exile was
finished, he became knowledgeable of 22 languages and dialects, including
Bisaya, Malay and Subanon,
Rizal’s behavior and talents brought positive impressions on Spanish Captain

C reator of all things, true Source of light and wisdom, lofty origin of all being,
graciously let a ray of Your brilliance penetrate into the darkness of my
understanding and take from me the double darkness in which I have been born, an
obscurity of both sin and ignorance.
Grant me the talent of being exact in my explanations, and the ability to express
myself with thoroughness and charm.
Point out the beginning, direct the progress, and help in completion; through Christ
our Lord. Amen.
T hank You, Lord God, for opening my eyes to the light of Your wisdom. You
have delighted my heart with the knowledge of truth. I ask You, Lord, help me
always to do Your will.
Grant that I may grow in grace, wisdom and virtue, that Your name may always be
glorified, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
