Explain
Some historians refer to the 19th century as a long century in Philippines history because
of the numerous changes that happened during this period. In terms of political and economic
changes, the brief occupation of Manila by British forces in 1762-1764 and the rapid
development of economic in Europe made Spanish administrators in the colony rethink their
policies so as not to get left behind by their neighbors and to prevent another incident such as
the British occupation from happening again in the near future.

Elaborate
What were the most important economic changes in the Philippines during the 19 th
century?
 The reforms were the abolition of the Galleon trade and the opening of the
Philippines to world trade in 1830. This enable not only the increase in economic
activities in the country and the entry of firms from other European states but also the
entry of foreign ideas mostly through the form of books and other printed media
during that time.
 Rizal was able to read various European literature such as Alexander Dumas’ The Count
of Monte Cristo and the Three musketeers.
 Andres Bonifacio the leader of the Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng
Anak ng Bayan (KKK) was also able to read literature on the French revolution that later
on influenced some of the works of both individuals.
 The nullification of the slave raiding activities of the Moro, also led to the Development
of agricultural lands and discovery of new frontiers in the Philippines. Eventually
created a change in social and economic class in the country with the principalias and
mestizo benefitting from the changes, thus the consequent emergence of local elite.
 Rizal’s family was considered one of the local elite in the province since they owned a
large blocks of lands from the friar estates in Calamba.
 The development however did not help in bridging the gap between local elite and
the poor and marginalized sectors in the country instead it leads to different revolts
such as the Basi Revolts in Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte during early 19th centuries.
 The revolts showed the gap between rich and poor because they were directed not only
against the Spanish authorities but also to the babaknang or the elite in the two
province.
 The implementation of the Cadiz Constitution in 1812 provided a brief legal
justification for the quest for equality since it was stated in the document that all
citizens of Spain, including those in the colonies, were equal under the law.

Education and the Rise of the Ilustrados

 All these reforms perhaps the most notable was the increase of educated Filipinos
as the colonial government, under directives from Spain, also started to reform
educational institutions in the Philippines.
 Filipino and Chinese Mestizo elite families were able to capitalized on the opening to
the world sent their children to school to take professional courses not only in the
Philippines but also in Europe.
 With their education and exposure outside the country, these individuals, who later
were referred to as ilustrados: core of a new emerging movement that asked the
colonial government for much needed reforms in the Philippines.
(GE 9 – The Life and Works of Jose Rizal)
 This movement called the reform and propaganda movement: it has a more
nationalistic and racial dimension fueled by the sufferings and discriminations
experienced by Filipinos under the Spaniards.
 It was also supplemented by the liberal policies applied by the liberal
administrations of Spain in the Philippines such as Cadiz Constitution in 1812.
 It also drew inspiration from the earlier efforts of the native secular priests: Padre
Jose Burgos, who fought for equal rights among the clergy in the 1860’s.
 He moved along with the students’ involvement from different higher institutions to
gain equal rights, however, was interpreted by the Spanish administrations and
friars as an attempt to overthrow the government leading to massive
breakdowns made against students along with some local elite.
 Burgos, along with fathers Jacinto Zamora and Mariano Gomez, were executed on
February 17, 1872.
 Rizal was born amidst all of these political and economic reforms and turmoil’s. He
belonged to a local elite family who was fortunate enough to send him in school in
the Philippines and was able to study in Europe.
 He participated in the propaganda movement while he was studying in Europe. Later
on, he moved back to Philippines in 1892 establishing the La Liga Filipina.
 For Rizal revolution was a means of emancipating the Philippines from Spain
based on his letter to fellow propagandists and such as Jose Alejandrino, Antonio
Luna. Marcelo H. Del Pilar, and Ferdinand Blumentritt. Also to the founder of
Katipunan, like Andres Bonifacio and Deodato Arellano, were member of Rizal’s La
Liga Filipina.

Prayer before Study

by St. Thomas Aquinas

C reator of all things, true Source of light and wisdom, lofty origin of all being, graciously let a
ray of Your brilliance penetrate into the darkness of my understanding and take from me
the double darkness in which I have been born, an obscurity of both sin and ignorance.

Give me a sharp sense of understanding, a retentive memory, and the ability to grasp things
correctly and fundamentally.

Grant me the talent of being exact in my explanations, and the ability to express myself with
thoroughness and charm.

Point out the beginning, direct the progress, and help in completion; through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Prayer after Study

T hank You, Lord God, for opening my eyes to the light of Your wisdom. You have delighted
my heart with the knowledge of truth. I ask You, Lord, help me always to do Your will.

Bless my soul and body, my words and actions.

Grant that I may grow in grace, wisdom and virtue, that Your name may always be glorified,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
