. Find the measure of
Sol. Since ABCD is a rectangle, AC = BD

i.e. AO = OB = OC = OD
In
ABO = BAO (Angles opposite to equal sides are equal)
Also,

Thus,
Now, in AOB,
According to the angle sum property of a triangle

37 + 37 + AOB = 180o

Sol.
0.353535353535 + 0.472472472472
= 0.826007826007

3. The sides of a triangle are 7.2 cm, 7.2 cm and 10.2 cm. without drawing the figure, how will you
convince your friend that measure of one of its angles is nearly ?
Sol. Sides of a triangle are 7.2 cm, 7.2 cm and 10.2 cm
Let sides be AB = 7.2, BC = 7.2 and AC = 10.2
Now
Adding the square of length of two smaller sides,
AB2 + BC2 = (7.2)2 + (7.2)2
AB2 + BC2 = 51.84 + 51.84
AB2 + BC2 = 103.68 ……(1)
And the square of length of the largest side
AC = (10.2)
AC = 104.04 …..(2)
From equation (1) and (2)
AC2 = AB2 + BC2
So, (Pythagoras theorem)

4. is a parallelogram. Find BD, if AB = 8 cm, AC = 34 and seg AB Seg BD

Sol. Since the diagonals of a parallelogram always

bisect each other,

AO = OC = 17 cm and OB = OD
Since, seg AB seg BD

So, in
According to the Pythagoras theorem
(AO)2 = (AB)2 + (BO)2
(17)2 = (8)2 +(BO)2
289 = 64 + (BO)2
(BO)2 = 289 – 64
(BO)2 = 225
BO = 15 cm
Also, OB = OD = 15cm
BD = OB + OD = 15 + 15 = 30 cm

8. The lines containing alternate sides of a regular polygon intersect each other at an angle of 108 o what
is the number of sides of polygon?
Sol. Sides of the regular polygon are always equal. Since the line containing alternate sides of the
polygon intersect each other at 180o one sector of angle 180o contains 3 sides of the regular polygon.
Now only 2 sectors of 180 o are possible,

PACE IIT & MEDICAL: Mumbai / Delhi & NCR / Goa / Akola / Kolkata / Nashik / Pune / Bokaro / Dubai # 3
Because, 180 + 180 = 360
Thus, no. of side = 3 + 3 = 6
Thus no. of sides of a polygon is 6.

9. A, B and C can complete a work in 8, 16 and 24 days respectively. They together started the work.
But C left work 1 day before completion. So A alone completed it. Find the number of days required
to complete the work.
Sol. Let the total work to be done be W.

Speed of working of A is per day

Speed of working of B is per day

Speed of working of C is per day

If all of them work together

Speed

Speed =

Time taken to complete the work =

So, A, B and C work together for 3 days and then C leaves.

So work done =

Work remaining =

Now, speed of A and B together =

So, time taken by A and B together,

Thus A and B work together for 1 day and then B leaves

So, work done =

be obtained by cutting the cube. What would be the maximum number of cubes
Sol. Volume of the largest cube

Let the number of 5 cm cube be x. And, the number of 3 cm cube by y

Now, volume of 5 cm cube

And volume of 3 cm cube

Now, according to the given condition

125x + 27y = 5832
Also, x + y must be maximum
Since volume of 3 cm cube is less, its quantity should be maximum
For x + y to be maximum
So, If y = 216x = 0

Sol. Since seg PR || seg AC, seg PT || seg PT || seg BC and seg TR || seg AB
P, T and R are mid-points of sides AB, AC and BC respectively
So, PT = TR = PR
Hence, PTR is an equilateral triangle

Squaring both sides again
We get,
(a2 + b2 + c2) =[–2(2ab + 2ac + 2bc)]2
(a2 + b2 + c 2) = 4(ab + ac + bc)2
(a2 + b2 + c 2)2 = 4(ab + ac)2 + (bc)2 + 2(ab + ac) (bc)
(a2 + b2 + c2) 2 = 4(a2b2 + a2c 2 + b2 c2 + 2a2 bc+2ab2 c+2abc2 )
(a2 + b2 + c 2)2 = 4(a 2b2+ a2c 2 + b2c2 + 2abc(a + b + c))

15. In l(AB) = 20, l(AC) = 21, l(BC) = 29 and B – D – E – C , l(BD) = 8, l(EC) = 9. Find the
measure of the angle DAE.

Sol. AB = 20, AC = 21 and BC = 29

Now, 202 + 212 = 292
i.e., AB 2 + AC2 = BC2
is a right angled triangle, right angled at A,

Since the angles are always in proportion to the side opposite to their

Hence,

16. AB and CD area parallel roads. S and M are homes of Sameer and Mahesh at the midpoints of the
roads. Straight roads AC and BD intersect each other at E. If d(AE) = 5.85 km, d(EC) = 1.95 km,
d(BD) = 9.76 km, then which is the shortest route from Sameer’s home to Mahesh’s home? Why?

Sol. AC = AE + EC = 5.85 + 1.95 = 7.8
BD = 9.76
AC < BD
So AC is the shorter route
So, shortest route between two homes is M – C – E – A – S
Ans: (S – A – E – C – M)

17. If 4 – A = A – B = B – C = C – D = D – 5, then find A : B : C : D

Sol. 4–A=D–5 ; 4 –A = A – B
A + D = 9……(1) ; 2A – B = 4…….(2)
C–D=D–5 ; A–B=B–C
2D – C = 5……(3) ; 2B – C = A…….(4)
B–C=C–D
B = 2C – D …..(5)
From equation (3) and (5) : From equation (1) and (2)
B = 2(2D – 5) – D : 2(9 – D) – B = 4
B = 4D – 10 – D : 18 – 2D – B = 4
B = 3D – 10 …..(6) B + 2D = 14 ……(7)
From (6) and (7)
3D – 10 + 2D = 14

From (2)

From (5)

18. In the following figure segment AB is a diameter of the circle. A chord CD is perpendicular to the
diameter AB at H. The length of AB is a two digit number and the number obtained by interchanging
the digits is the length of the chord CD. Find the length of the chord CD. Find the length AB, if l(OH)
is a rational number.

PACE IIT & MEDICAL: Mumbai / Delhi & NCR / Goa / Akola / Kolkata / Nashik / Pune / Bokaro / Dubai # 35
Sol. Let length of segment AB be xy
So, length of chord CD will be yx
Now, any chord of a circle is always shorted than its diameter, because longest chord of a circle is its
diameter.

xy > yx
10x + y > 10y + x
9x > 9y
…….(1)

Now length

But OC = radius =

And,

It is Given that I(OH) is rational number

(xy) – (yx) must be perfect square ……(2)
Thus only values of x and y that satisfy equation (1) and (2) simultaneously are
x = 6, y = 5
xy = 65 and yx = 56

And: (AB = 65, CD = 56, l(OH) = )
