Problem I: The concentration readings in Table1 represent a continuous
response to a pulse input into a closed vessel which is to be used as a
chemical reactor. Calculate
(i) the mean residence time of fluid in the vessel t
(ii) and tabulate and plot the exit age distribution E.
(iii) Find the fraction of material leaving between 25 minutes and 30 minutes.

Problem 2: A sample of the tracer hytane at 320 K was injected as a pulse to
a reactor, and the effluent concentration was measured as a function of
time, resulting in the data shown in Table 2.

The measurements represent the exact concentrations at the times listed


and not average values between the various sampling tests.(a) Construct
figures showing C(t) and E(t) as functions of time.(b)Determine the fraction
of material leaving that has spent between 7.75 and 8.25 min in the
reactor, and (c) determine the fraction of material leaving the reactor that
has spent 3 min or less in the reactor.

• By plotting C as a function of time, using the data in Table E13-1.1, the
curve shown in Figure 1 is obtained.

To obtain the E(t) curve from the C(t) curve divide C(t) by the integral
which is just the area under the C curve, Area under the curve = 50 g min/m3

The shaded area represents the fraction of material leaving the reactor that has
resided in the reactor between 7.75 and 8.25 min. = 0.03 g. min/m3
Finally, we shall consider the fraction of material that has been in the reactor for a time t or
less, that is, the fraction that has spent between 0 and t minutes in the reactor. Calculating
the area under the curve, we see that 20% of the material has spent 3 min or less in the
reactor.

Problem – 3: Calculate the mean residence time and the variance for the
reactor characterized in problem 2 by the RTD obtained from a
pule input at 320 K.
