An eye opener on campus journalism

The declining performance on the succeeding Regional Elementary Schools Press Conferences is
an alarming issue which needs an action immediately thus, upgrading the journalistic skills of School
Paper Advisers should be prepped especially on the least participated categories.
According to the Division Journalism Coordinator, Mrs. Maria C. Moscare, the division standing
has been consecutively lowered. Although, individual contests marked well, still the overall
performance fared dismally for the reason that on group contests the division performed not so well.
Because of that terrified development on campus journalism, there must be a timely and
separate enhancement training for mentors and pupil writers in order to equip the necessary skills.
With the assistance of the knowledgeable facilitators and new skills acquired there is no reason that the
division will fare well in the regional competition and up to national level.
Furthermore, the teaching of campus journalism should go beyond the competition mode. Pupil
writers should be trained to write for life not only for competition because for a 21 st century writers
there is a wide room for creativity in providing more effective avenues to practice. It is imperative then,
that the value of campus journalism should be recognized.
Thus, enhancement training is an eye opener for them to work more on campus journalism.

Martial law for peace

As expected, the two chambers of congress overwhelmingly approved President Duterte’s
request for a five-month extension of martial law in the entire Mindanao. The approval came on the
heels of a survey taken after martial law was imposed, which showed the President enjoying public
approval and trust ratings in the dizzyingly high 80s percentage. The congressional approval of
President’s request merely sealed that mandate.
The President asked for extension as he noted that the threat posed by the Islamic State-
inspired Mautes persisted in Marawi, with the terrorist leadership still intact. He also linked the Marawi
siege to previous terrorist attacks in several provinces and cities in Mindanao as he emphasized the risks
of IS-Maute threat spilling over other areas.
While using the extension of martial law to the fullest, the government at the same time must
find other ways of neutralizing the terrorist threat. Senators have promised to review the Human
Security act or Republic Act 9372. Passed ten years ago, the law against terrorism has not been applied
by police, who fear provisions, the government could have a powerful tool for tracking down and
neutralizing the Mautes, their sympathizers and affiliates.
At the same time, commitments to bring development to the rebel-affected areas of Mindanao
must go beyond rhetoric. Insurgencies feed on poverty, social injustice and bad government. Without
these elements, even perpetual martial law will not end armed threats in Mindanao.
