Component Two: Description and Rationale


• This lesson will continue with our Christmas themed activities.
• This lesson will incorporate elements of literacy, physical skills, personal and social
responsibility and creative expression.
• Students will understand that sending someone a card is a way of showing that they are
special to us. The story we are reading before hand is mainly as a fun activity to focus the
students before the art activity.
Description: • Students will be able to exercise their fine motor skills but cutting card-stock and painting on
glue.
• Students will exercise their literacy by writing a Christmas message on the card along with
reading Aliens Love Panta Claus
• Differentiation Considerations - Fine motor issues and speech. A few students are just having
trouble developing their fine motor skills. Students will be able to further develop their skills by
drawing, pasting, glueing etc.

Students will learn that they can show how they feel about others through a holiday card.
Rationale:
Students will enjoy crafting their own special card to give to the person of their choosing.

• Ask students to direct their attention to the front board. (Hands on top, now we
stop)
• Behavioural reminders for students - remind students that Miss Hirsche will pick a
secret student at the end of the day. Reminds students to raise their hand before 5
speaking (Oh I can’t hear you if you don’t raise your hand!) Please wait in your
chair and raise your hand if you need me, don’t come over.
• If students are energetic or excitable that day then do 5 finger breathing exercise
before putting out book.
• Show students the book “Aliens Love Panta Claus”

Learning - Explain to students the importance of greeting cards and how they can be used.

- How do you show the people you love that they are special to you? Have you
ever received a card? Maybe for your birthday?
- Explain to the students that today we are making Christmas cards that you can
give to someone special at home! Mrs. Mahoney is passing out a piece of paper
right now and awe are going to write a message on it.
- Explain to students that the card has four lines on it. We are going to write
“Merry Christmas, Love, ______” You can copy my letters off the board, just
write your name instead of mine!
- Wait for students to complete writing the message. Once they are done writing
they will be instructed to cut out along the black solid line on the outside of the 35
card. Please wait patiently for your classmates once you are done.
- Once they are finished cutting, they can fold along the black dotted line. Show
students on exemplar lining up the pieces and folding slowly. If you need help,
raise your hand.
- Once this is complete they can paint white glue along the very top of the fold.
Stick Santa’s hat onto the glue. Once this is complete raise your hand for a
teacher to come find and help you. The teacher will help you glue on the eyes
and nose.
- Next students will paint on glue along the bottom and hat line using their
brushes. Next they need to fluff the cotton balls and stick them down onto the
glue making Santa’s beard and hair.
- Cards will be set aside to dry.
