    “Hurt”

    “I will let you down, I will make you hurt”. This is a quote from the song, and I

    think that this is one of the most important ones because it sums up the main idea of the

    song. I think that the meaning of the song “Hurt” is that he thinks that he has let

    everyone down in his life and that he is upset with himself about it. The two artists that

    sing this song are Johnny Cash and Nine Inch Nails. The main difference between them

    is that in Cash’s video, he talks about his own life and in the Nine Inch Nails video he

    shows pictures and videos of people in the war. They sang the song in 1995, and Cash

    sang it in 2002. ​The song "Hurt" was actually written by a singer from Nine Inch Nails,

    and when he sings it he portrays an audience that has been hurt in their life. After he

    sang the song, Johnny Cash sang a new version that was incredible, so he got the

    credit for the song, which also is meant to be for people who may regret things in their

    life or have been hurt in some way.

    I know that many people think of this song as a sad one, especially the Johnny

    Cash version. This is because it was one of the last songs he had ever sang, and also

    because both him and his wife died within a year of the filming of the video. There is just

    so much sadness behind the story of this video and the lyrics of the song, it makes you

    emotional. There is not much background information for the Nine Inch Nails version

    because the music video is just a live performance of the song with clips of war and

    veterans in the background.

    You might think that since the song was sung by two different people it has two

    different meanings, which is actually not true. I believe that both of them have the same

    meaning, it is just shown in different ways. For example, in Cash’s video it shows clips

    of when he was younger, then it comes back to where he is now where he is talking

    about his “empire of dirt”. In the Nine Inch Nails video, there are clips of the war, and the

    soldiers that were in the war. I think that these examples prove that the meanings of this

    song are that there are consequences and sometimes regret goes along with those.

    Both of these videos also use the pathos appeal. This is because from the examples I

    have talked about before and the main ideas, it shows us that the way the writers

    appeal to the audience is definitely by using emotion.

    Another main idea about this song that both artists portray is pain. For example,

    a couple of the lyrics are “beneath the stains of time, the feelings disappear” and

    “everyone I know goes away in the end”. I think that both of these prove that there is a

    meaning of pain behind this song. Cash closes the video with him shutting the piano. I

    think that was a very impactful way to close the video because it is telling us as the

    audience that his time is almost finished. An example of a way the Nine Inch Nails video

    portrays pain is because of the way he sings the song. You can tell that he has been

    through a lot in his life the way he is pouring out his emotions while performing. Another

    example would be how there are clips of dying or dead animals in the video, so I think

    that could definitely relate to the point. One more example of a lyric that proves to us

    that the meaning of the song could be about pain is “I focus on the pain, the only thing

    that’s real”. In that lyric, it basically just tells us, we don’t have to interpret anything.

    There are so many meanings that I think could be behind the lyrics of this song, but

    these are just the main ones. There are actually lots of ideas out there to what the main

    idea/meaning is because there isn’t a definite one, everyone just interprets it differently.

    “I will let you down, I will make you hurt”. The lyric that describes it all. This is

    such an impactful song, and I honestly think everyone should hear it. Both of these

    artists are great, but I think that the Johnny Cash version is extremely impactful

    because he had such an incredible legacy. Once again, the main ideas/meanings of this

    song are pain, consequence, and regret. I believe these lyrics are so impactful, so if you

    get the chance, I would definitely recommend giving it a listen, and take it all in.
