Song
Song title
Punching in a Dream
Artist
The Naked and Famous
Genre
Indie
What are the conventions of music videos from this genre?
From my research I have discovered that most of the generic conventions of indie music videos are very similar. The costumes tend to be casual laid back clothes, which you would normally wear with nothing to fancy or expensive. Also the positioning of the frame with the lead singing usually positioned in the centre of the frame, at the front of the band looking into the camera. The lead singer of the band is very important in indie and indie rock bands because they are the face of the band and the one the audience recognise the most and associate the band with. Usually also in most music videos for this genre there are props, the most common props used are a band with drums, guitars, etc. And also most the time the lead singer will have a microphone. The last and mostly used convention is a narrative beside the song that fits in with the lyrics and theme of the music to co-inside with it to tell a story.
How are you going to meet these conventions in your video?
Style
In my music video to meet the generic conventions of the style of music and song I am going to use some of the conventions such as, the clothes and costumes, there will be a narrative and story next to the songs that makes sense with the lyrics, meaning to the song and style and there will be two main sings for the male and female parts.
Costume The costumes I will use in my music video will meet the conventions from other music videos because I want the style to base on indie fashion, therefore all the characters will be wearing laid back clothes such as; jeans, t-shirt and jacket etc. I want to so this to meet the generic conventions and make my video as realistic as possible.
Lighting
the lighting I will use in my video will follow some of the conventions of most indie music videos, I want both the singers to be in a dark place with a white background and the only light source to be from studio lights or spot lights. For the narrative part and story line I want to use natural lighting, e.g. sun sets and light coming through the trees. Also I want some scenes to be done as the light is going down to create more effect.
Locations
For the locations I am going to use a studio type setting where the band/singers will be, the I will use other locations like the woods and parts of houses where the story will be set. I want to use both of these locations because I want the singers to be clearly separate from the story line and have them miming the lyrics in another scene/setting so that they story of the two people was easier to understand and keep up with.
Shot types
In my video I am going to use several shot types to meet the conventions of the style of indie, these are; close ups and mid shots of the two singers to show their emotions but also not be too intense. And for the narrative of the story I am going to us; extreme close up to show the characters emotions and show how intense the story line is, over the shoulder shots to show the two characters are looking at each other and their emotions towards one another. Also I am going to use wide shots to show the area around of her following him and high angle shots of the trees spinning to also as intensity of his emotions.
Research What music videos have you watched to research your genre? To help with my research I have watched music video of cage the elephant, shake me down. From this video I got the idea to use a story next to the song that fits in with the lyrics slightly and that the audience can follow and watch at the same time to understand the song more. Another video I watched from this genre was Foals song My number. I looked at both of these music videos because although they are from the same genre and follow some of the same conventions they are both filmed and edited very differently to tell a different story. I wanted to research both because I wanted to see how different you can make something and change it.
How have these videos influenced the decisions made? Include screen shots of the key influence
One of the influences I got from this music video by Cage the Elephants was the costumes and style of the band; they are all just wearing casual, normal, everyday clothes.
The other music video I looked by foals has a slightly different style to the cage the elephant one however there are still parts of it I want to take and use to influence my own video. One of the things I am going to use is how there is a story happening as well as the music video. Also what I like about this video is where it is set and how the bands are actually featured in it playing a gig setting.
Another thing I want to use from this music video are the shots used and how quickly the shots change and cut between each other. Also I like how in the instrumental bit at the beginning it has shots taken of the band playing their instruments at the gig and cuts to clips of the crowd. I like this because it shows off all the band members and their contribution, this is something I would like to use in my music video however it might not be as practical because of the extra people needed and props of instruments. However I would still like to use this kind of style to influence my own video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRR_pvZcu-o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v27TRan1SBI Lyrics Insert the song lyrics below [Verse 1] [ALISSA:] All the lights go down as I crawl into the spaces If I died on the screens Life tearing at the seams
[Chorus] Way-yay-yay-yay-yay I don't ever want to be here Like punching in a dream breathing life into my nightmare
[Bridge] If it falls apart I would surely wake it Bright lights turn me clean This is worse than it seems
[Chorus]
[Verse 2] [TOM:] They'll get through They'll get you In the place that you feel it the most When you're cornered When it's forming In the place that you wish was a ghost
[Outro] Way-yay-yay-yay-yay I don't ever want to be here Like punching in a dream breathing life into my nightmare Way-yay-yay-yay-yay I don't ever want to be here Like punching in a dream breathing life into my nightmare Meaning of the song
Does the song have a meaning? If so, what is it?
Yes, this song has a meaning; I believe that the meaning and point of the song Is about someone who has been hurt and wanting to get back at someone. From looking at the lyrics the message in them is quite powerful and dark compared to the style and beat of the tune. The main lyric in the songs is Like punching in a dream breathing life into my nightmare I interpret that as the characters worst nightmare has come true. From this lyric it makes me think of dreams and someone having a dream but it turning into their worst nightmare. I then can relate the rest of the lyrics to a bad break-up or a bad relationship situation and a character becoming someones worst nightmare from it.
How will your visuals relate to the song? (Illustrate, Amplify or Disjuncture)
For the visuals I will use to relate to the song I am going to use two singers (they will have no connection to the story) then I am going to use two characters to tell a story next to the lyrics. In the story the two characters are going to be exs and it tells a story of how he has done something to hurt her and now she wants to fight back. My idea is too start with a boy walking into the woods, then as the song progresses you realise he is being followed by someone then you discover it is a girl following him. When they meet in the woods there is a small fight between the two people, then it cuts to a different seen through a match cute to them in a fight seen, almost like a boxing arena and her punching him. This will go in the lyrics of the song because there is a lot of use of the word punching and the idea of punching. After he has been hit in the face it will then cut to him waking up and realising it is a dream. This will also relate to the song because it is a dream all along and the song relates to dreams.

All the lights go down as I crawl into the spaces If I died on the screens Life tearing at the seams Way-yay-yay-yay-yay I don't ever want to be here Like punching in a dream breathing life into my nightmare If it falls apart I would surely wake it Bright lights turn me clean This is worse than it seems They'll get through They'll get you In the place that you feel it the most When you're cornered When it's forming In the place that you wish was a ghost Wo-oah[x2] Wo-oah, wo-oah Wo-oah[x2] Wo-oah, wo-oah Way-yay-yay-yay-yay I don't ever want to be here Like punching in a dream breathing life into my nightmare Way-yay-yay-yay-yay I don't ever want to be here Like punching in a dream breathing life into my nightmare Instrumental starts as Will walks with camera following him, then as lyric starts cuts to Beth singing. Cuts back and forth from the story to Beth and Ed dancing then Beth miming again and dancing. As these lyrics are sung the audience get more f an understanding as to what is happening in the narrative part as Lucy starts getting closer to Will and yelling at him. This is the male vocal part and where Ed comes in to mime his part. As this is happening it cuts to Lucy and Will fighting, then to the fight part of the video. Then goes back to Ed and Beth both dancing and cuts between Lucy and will dancing and the emotions with them and Beth and Ed Then cuts to the final fight scene of Will and Lucy as Lucy punches Will it cuts to him then waking up and realising it was a dream, looking at his phone and seeing the messages. As this is happening it is still cutting back to Beth and Ed.
