WASTE SEGREGATION PLAN

Background

Any situation that wishes to make a difference in the industry where they
belong should seriously consider sustainable waste management plan. Garbage
Segregation and disposal not only will help maintain the institution’s facility. It
will also send and excellent message to its stakeholders of its commitment to
high standards.

Waste Management is the collection, transport, processing, recycling or

disposal waste materials, usually ones by human activity, in an effort to reduce
their effect on human health or local aesthetics or amenity.

RA 9003 IN A NUTSHELL

Basic of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. Waste reduction

and Proper Solid Waste Segregation are no longer choices we have to make as a
law abiding citizen of this country, we are required to follow a law enacted as
early as 2001. Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management
Act of 2000, was signed into law on January 26, 2001.

It is considered a broad-based and comprehensive approach to solid waste

management. It involves segregation at source, segregated collection, storage,
transfer, processing, treatment and disposal of solid waste. The law promotes a
way of thinking that waste is a resource that can removed. This can be
achieved by following the 3 R’s: Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.

The law mandates us to put these principles into practices by doing so; the
problem of the solid waste management can be solved. The law requires the
following:

• Solid waste must be reduce at source

• Recyclable materials must be recovered
• The remaining waste, after the recyclable and biodegradable materials
have been separated and used, is to be disposed properly.

Solid waste management begins inside the household. Starting in our

homes, we must learn to conserve resources so we can reduce the amount of
the materials that we throw. Our Local Government Units (LGU) are
responsible for enforcing the law. Government agencies on the national level
are required to support LGU’s in carrying out this responsibility. LGU’s are
thus required to draw up a solid waste management plan in terms of areas of
responsibility, the Barangay is tasked to ensure that households and
establishments reduce waste, reuse materials and cover recyclable items. The

city or municipality provides a garbage collection system, and a proper waste
treatment and disposal facility that protects the environment.

TYPES OF WASTE FROM OMTSI:

1. Biodegradable
2. Non-Biodegradable
3. Hazardous
4. Others; like disposal items from offices and laboratories

WASTE DISPOSAL SCHEME

Biodegradable

Biodegradable wastes are disposed at the assigned containers coded

GREEN at every laboratory and area at school. Every day, these garbage cans
are collected by the maintenance department and are sorted out before
bringing to the garbage disposal area for pick-up of the collectors.

Items like kitchen fruits and vegetable trimmings are COMPOSTED at

the back area of the campus. This are turned into fertilizers of the herb garden
and ornamental plant garden in the campus.

Non-Biodegradable

REDUCE
Non-Biodegradable wastes are REDUCED, REUSED, or RECYCLED. We
try to minimize waste of this kind by imposing a non-plastic usage at the
school cafeteria and laboratories. As much as possible, offices are provided
with the glass utensils to reduce to reduce the use of plastics. Garbage
disposals plastics are maximized to prevent piling of plastics. Resources are
also managed like white board materials, wires, cables, and the likes to prevent
piling up and eventually disposal of these items.

We also have the campaign on using big containers to reduce usages of

plastic containers.

RE-USE
Items such as papers are used again if possible as scratch papers in the
offices. We also encourage sharing of tools and equipment in offices to avoid
unnecessary accumulation of non-biodegradable items such as staple wires,
fasteners, ink cartridge, and the likes.

RECYCLE
We do not dispose tools, equipment, and furniture right away. We try to
re-purpose it in other areas or offices e.g. making a large table that has broken
legs as small table for use as a faculty tables. We also have campaign

spearhead by NSTP to bring at the IMUS Local Government and OMTSI
Training Center. Hazardous materials or wastes are handled properly, making
sure that they are safely disposed and far from the kitchen or other student
laboratories.
