Army Limits
Introduction

These are a set of rules for use in Total War: Warhammer tournaments, designed to limit the ways
players build armies in order to ensure that battles are enjoyable both to play and watch, and where
possible decided on the battlefield rather than purely at the army selection screen.

The Warhammer Cup army limits are designed independently from the in-game unit caps implemented
by CA: whether to also enable CA’s caps when using our limits is a decision we leave to tournament
hosts. We welcome CA’s decision to move towards unit caps, but at the time of writing we do not
believe CA’s caps limit abusive builds enough to be suitable for tournaments without additional rules.

If you want to ask questions or give feedback on the Warhammer Cup army limits, please visit the
Dedicated Warhammer Tournament Discord, where you will find dedicated channels for rules
discussion, regular tournament announcements, and a friendly community of tournament players
always happy to see new players!

1. Minimum Army Size
Your army must have at least 250 models in it to be considered legal.

2. Unit Caps
Each unit in a faction’s roster has a limit both on how many of that unit you can take, and how much
you can spend on instances of that unit (before chevrons). Apply the lower of the two.

Unit Size Maximum Units Maximum Spend

46 models or more 5
2 to 45 models 4 4400

2.1 Unit Variants

Some units have multiple unit cards representing different variants of the unit. For these units, we
provide the following clarifications of which unit cards count towards the same cap, and which don’t:

• Melee infantry and cavalry with weapon variants (e.g. Dwarf Warriors and Dwarf Warriors
(Great Weapons) are considered different. Shield variants (e.g. Saurus Warriors and Saurus
Warriors (Shields)) are considered the same.
• Missile infantry and cavalry with weapon variants (e.g. Glade Guard and Glade Guard
(Starfire Shafts)) are considered the same unless their melee stats, missile damage and range
are all different.
• Monstrous units and chariots with weapon variants (e.g. Minotaurs and Minotaurs (Great
Weapons) are considered the same.
• Regiments of Renown count the same as their parent unit, and count as the same cost (i.e. their
added cost is treated as being due to chevrons).
• Mounts count towards single entity limits – e.g. if you have a Glade Lord on a Forest Dragon,
you can only take 1 unridden Forest Dragon – and count as the same cost.
• Named monster lords and mounts count towards the caps for their generic counterparts – e.g.
Kholek counts as 1 Shaggoth, Seraphon counts as 1 Black Dragon – and count as the same cost.

2.2 Summoned Units

Summoned units do not count towards any caps.

2.3 Unique Units

You may not duplicate any named lord, hero or Regiment of Renown. You may not bring units from the
Campaign Exclusive unit category.

3
3. Army-Wide Caps
Some classes of unit are subject to an army-wide limit, in addition to the limits placed on each
individual unit in the class by the unit caps in rule 2. These classes are:

3.1 Characters: Characters are any unit designated as a Lord or Hero by the game. You may
have a maximum of three characters in your army.

3.2 Spellcasters: Lords and heroes that can cast spells (i.e. abilities that consume Winds of
Magic) are classified as spellcasters (even if they have not purchased any spells). You may have a
maximum of two spellcasters in your army. You may not take any spell more than once.

3.3 Runecasters: Dwarf Runelords and Runesmiths are collectively termed ‘runecasters’. You
may have a maximum of two runecasters in your army. They may take duplicate abilities.

3.4 Parthian Shot: Units are classed as having “Parthian Shot” if they have a missile attack
that can fire in a 360° arc, can fire while moving, and have a unit size greater than 1. You may have a
maximum of 6 Parthian Shot units in your army.

3.5 Single Entity Monsters: Single Entity Monsters are any monster with only one
model in the unit. This includes character mounts, and monsters whose unit card does not say
“monster” but are clearly monsters (e.g. Cygors, Stegadons). Single entity war machines such as the
Steam Tank, Screaming Bell and Cauldron of Blood also fall into this category. You may have a maximum of 3
single entity monsters or war machines in your army.

3.6 Superweapons: Superweapons are high-powered, expensive units that are judged to be
unbalanced when brought in large numbers. Superweapons are designated on a faction-by-faction basis.
You may have a maximum of one superweapon in your army.
Superweapon List: Slann (including Kroak & Mazdamundi), Luminarks, Steam Tanks, Cygors, Necrofex
Colossi, Hierotitans

4. Restricted Items and Abilities

4.1 - Nets
You may not bring more than one item, spell or ability that immobilises enemy units – e.g. Net of
Amyntok, Prey of Anath Raema, Tormentor Sword.
4.2 - Breaths
You may not bring more than two units with breath attacks (e.g. Dragons, Terrorgheists, Hydras).
4.3 - Drains
You may not bring more than one “draining” (passive direct damage) ability (e.g. Mortis Engines,
Warpstone Armour, Plague Furnaces, Mist of the Lady).

Faction Cheat
Sheets
The following ‘cheat sheets’ summarise the number of units you are allowed to take of each unit card in
the faction roster (excluding lords and heroes). They are player aids, not rules – if there is a
contradiction between the rules on pages 3 & 4 and the cheat sheet, the cheat sheet is in error.
