1. Assume an ideal regenerative steam power plant with the following operating conditions:
Boiler exit temperature: 500°C
Boiler exit pressure: 9Mpa
Condenser pressure: 0.005Mpa
Extractions are at 5Mpa, 2Mpa, and 0.8Mpa
Mass flow rate: 21000 kg/hr
Determine: a) total hourly extraction rate b) Ideal power and ideal pump power c) cycle
thermal efficiency d) engine thermal efficiency
2. An ideal reheat engine with one stage of reheating develops 650 kJ/kg during the first partial
expansion and 743 kJ/kg during the second expansion. Heat absorbed in the re-heater is
557 kJ/kg, and steam leaves the re-heater at 1.2 MPa and 538 oC. Condenser pressure is 5
kPaa. Find the thermal efficiency of the engine.
3. An ideal reheat turbine with one stage of reheat receives steam at 8 MPa, 480 oC. Reheat
pressure is 0.83 MPa and exhaust pressure is 0.007 MPa. The work is 1559 kJ/kg and the
thermal efficiency is 41.05%. Find the temperature of steam leaving the heater.
4. Assume an ideal reheat - regenerative steam power plant with the following operating

5. In a 25 MW steam power plant steam is generated at 440 °C and has an entropy of 6.7906
KJ/Kg-K and condensation occurs at 45°C if the generator and mechanical efficiencies are
90% and 95% respectively, determine the enthalpies at all points in KJ/Kg, heat added in
KJ/Kg, heat rejected in KJ/Kg, net work in KJ/Kg, thermal efficiency, and the mass flow rate
for a generator output of 25 MW in Kg/hr.
6. Steam at 5.2 Mpa, 400°C expands in a Rankine turbine to 0.036Mpa. for 136 kg/s of steam
determine the ideal work in KJ/Kg, the thermal efficiency and the steam rate. For an actual
turbine with the same limits, the brake steam rate is 4.80 Kg/ KW-hr and the generator has
an efficiency of 93%, find the brake thermal efficiency power generated by the generator in
MW and actual quality of steam after expansion.
7. In a reheat cycle steam at 16 MPaa and 550 oC enters the engine and expands to 2 MPaa. At
this point the steam is withdrawn and passed through a reheater. It re-enters the engine at
560 oC. Expansion now occurs to a condenser temperature of 24oC. For and ideal cycle find
the (a) thermal efficiency.
A turbo-generator producing 60 MW of combined power operates between the same state
points except that steam enters the reheater at 2 MPaa and 280 oC and departs at 1.9 MPaa
and 560 oC. The steam flow is 147,000 kg/hr. Generator efficiency is 95 %. For the actual
engine find b) generator heat rate, c) engine efficiency, d) approximate enthalpy of exhaust
steam if heat loss in the turbine casing is 2 % of the combined work, e) brake heat rate.
8. A four-cylinder diesel engine that operates on an air standard Diesel cycle is supplied with
1490 KJ/Kg of heat per cycle at 3600 rpm. The pressure and temperature at the beginning of
compression are 1 bar and 17°C, respectively. And the pressure after compression is 4.33
MPa determine (a) compression ratio, (b) maximum temperature (c) cut-off ratio (d) thermal
efficiency
9. An air standard Otto cycle operates with a compression ratio of 8.55, at the beginning of
compression, the air is at 0.98 bar and 32°C. During the heat addition process the pressure is
tripled. Determine (a) temperatures at all points of the cycle in kelvin (b) output power in HP
using a mass flow rate of 2kg/s (c) thermal efficiency of the cycle (d) mass flow rate of
cooling water required during the heat rejection process if the allowable increase of water
temperature is only 5°C in KG/hr.
10. A diesel cycle operates with a compression ratio of 13.5 and with a cut-off occurring at 6% of
the stroke. State 1 is defined by 14psia and 140F. For k=1.34 and an initial volume of 1ft 3,
compute (a) heat rejected, (b) Wnet, (c) thermal efficiency, (d) mean effective pressure, (e)
for a rate of circulation of 1000cfm, compute the Hp.
