CONGENITAL SYPHILIS

Congenital syphilis and gonorrhea can be prevented by early recognition of these diseases
among the couples and their treatment and by observing clean and safe delivery practices
during and after.

Some babies are born with syphilis. The skin lesion of the palm of the hand, and sole of the
feet at birth are suspicious and snuffles at about four weeks. The cry become hoarse fissures
at the center of the lips, the angles of the mouth and around the anus, sore buttock and saddle
nose at about 12 months.

TREATMENT

 Early recognition of maternal condition.


 Treatment in early pregnancy.
 The baby may be very ill. Intramuscular procain penciliiin 50,000. IU per kg body
weight is given in divided dose over 10 days.
 In the presence of contagious lesions the baby must be barrier nursed until antibiotics
have been given for 48 hours
 Follow up is prolonged and parents will need investigation for persistent infection

HIV/AIDS
New born may also be infected with HIV if the mother is HIV positive. About 30 %
babies born to HIV positive mothers get infected with HIV. The risk transmission
depends upon the sevearity of infection in mother. The possibility of transmission of
infection through breast milk is also there.
TREATMENT
There is no specific treatment for HIV infection or for the immunodeficiency caused
by it. Currently available therapy neither eradicate the virus nor offer the definite
cure.it can only supprss viral replication and modify course of the disease a
combination of anti retroviral drugs is preferred to monotherapy. Early specific
diagnosis and aggressive antimicrobial treatment of intercurrent infection prolong the
life of the affected child
ANTIVIRAL DRUGS
 Nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors(NRTIs),
zidovudine(AZT), didanosine (ddi), zalcitabine(ddc), lamivudine(3TC),
stavudine (d4T), abacavir (ABC)
 Non – nucleoside analogue RTIS(NNRTIs): nevirapine (NVP),
delaviridine(DLU),efavirenz(EFV).
 Protease inhibitors (PI): ritonavior (RTV),indinavir,saquinavir (SQV),
nelfinavir (NFV), amprenavir(APV), lopinavir
