Reflection #4
Some areas where I have experienced success during Ed 2500 is when my teacher associate
allowed me to read with a couple of the students. This allows me the privilege to work closely
with the students in my class room and to observe their levels of reading proficiency and some
challenges that they face. The library learning books are leveled in order of A being the starting
point tiered and working through the alphabet to Z, which would be the most difficult. One of the
students that I was assisting completed his first book at level G and was then moved up to level
H. This was a book about noises that you can hear in a park, he also finished this one quickly and
with ease. The student and I returned to the library and I moved him up to level J. When he
flipped open the book he expressed to me that he wouldn’t be able to read it because it was too
hard, I told him to be positive and give it a try and we dived in. I believe that, this book was
better suited for his level of reading as he was able to read it despite it having more challenging
words and phrases, he even expressed to me that he didn’t think he would be able to read the
book but once reading time was up he told me that he felt this was more at his level. For
reference, most of the children in this grade level read at a P level. This is a great method for
determining a student’s reading proficiency and is definitely a technique that I will utilize in my
teaching career as a way of assessing my student’s. Based on the students lettering level you’re
also able to see how many months/years the child is ahead or behind and take measures to
improve the student’s level of proficiency. My teacher associate has allowed me to participate in
writing an idiom on the board in hand writing every morning for the class to re-copy into their
notebooks. It’s a great idea to go over idioms each and every morning with the class, since
idioms are part of everyday English and our cultural heritage. Some of the idioms we went over
have been around for thousands of years, which was very interesting to learn.
One of my goals was to be able to show more authority in the classroom but I didn’t want to
always be reprimanding and correcting students. I understand that a teacher’s roll in a classroom
is to spot these errors and address them, but I still feel like some children will try to test my
boundaries and limits. It is natural for students to, “test the waters”, however, I feel that because
I’m a student teacher this also adds to them taking more liberties with me. Since this course is
condensed into eight weeks instead of the typical three-month semester, it’s been a challenge for
me to accomplish all of my goals. However, I have been helping a couple of the students more
with reading in the morning and assisting them when they need guidance. I’ve also been working
on my other goal of being a better chess player. I’ve had the chance to play with a couple of the
students, especially, using the pawn chess pieces to play, “pawn war”, against the students.
I have enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the students from my Ed 2500 experience and
look forward to continuing my classes and future student teaching rounds. The interaction I have
had with the students has been enlightening, rewarding and has produced many techniques that I
look forward to trying and/or implementing in my future teaching experiences. My teacher and
Teacher Associate have helped fuel my passion for teaching through their enthusiasm and
expertise. When I observe my mentors utilizing their teaching skills I aspire to contribute to
education as they have. The teaching experience has been very positive and has solidified my
desire to become a teacher.
