POWER OF LANGUAGE ESSAY 2

Language is the form of communication around the world. Whether we read it, write it,

speak it with our words or hands it is the way we make our world go round. The English

language is a difficult language to learn, however not the most difficult, but it has lots of rules to

be understood. There are different stages of learning certain concepts as children are educated

and although we are always learning and growing, or at least should be, the foundation of these

rules are set in Elementary all the way up to highschool. I can honestly say that i’ve learned more

now in college in understanding what I was taught as a child then I did back then or at least I

understand what I was learning better now. Have a strong foundation in word formation,

grammar, syntax, pragmatics, acquisition, physical hand gestures and face gestures and so on

sets school aged children up for success in the future. Not just in school but in life in a job and

the way we communicate even with friends and family. It gives students the ability to have the

confidence for their future and even gives them a self confidence boost when communication

with peers or adults or others not of the same age. It is absolutely imperative for an educator to

offer every rule of the english language to their students for those reasons I listed above. In order

to write a resume for a job interview or a college paper or perhaps someone that deals with a lot

of people to be able to relay the messages, we all need to have proper communication skills. I

don’t think were going to always remember every single rule and I say that because I am in my

thirties and I am just now learning certain concepts which I really appreciate and want to apply

to everything I do now, obviously teaching it well as well.

In the article, “21st Century skills and the English Language Classroom,” it pointed out

one very important subject matter, a low budget classroom can be done in the 21st century. This

is so important for teachers to learn because as I’ve taught for a couple of years, I can’t even

begin to say how much money i’ve spent. I am learning to use online resources and go to

seasoned teachers to be able to still create the lessons that I’m teaching with the same success, but

not have to spend money out of my own pocket. I know so many teachers that have accumulated

their materials over the years and have kept it in their garages or if they keep the same

classrooms keep it organized in their classrooms. This is something that I hope to accomplish

not necessarily for my students but for myself. I want communication to be my biggest goal for

my students. Not just between myself and them, but with one another. I want to make sure they

always feel as though they can ask questions and retain information from working with peers on

group projects. Communication is key and how I communicate is key.

Another aspect of a good classroom that I hope to imply is always be on top of current

curriculum. This can be a challenge because most schools you have to teach what they give you

and not all curriculums are good. “Take your average prepositions lesson as an example. Even in

the best communicative classroom a teacher may still spend some time explaining the rules,

setting up the activity and delivering instruction. By applying the 4Cs we can turn this lesson a

bit more on its head, making a typical ELL grammar lesson into something magical.” We have

to be able to think outside the box. Yes, use the curriculum given to us, but use creativity and

resources to enhance lessons to get to the students. Each grade and each age have certain

concepts to teach. If I get the little ones I will make sure they have a strong phonemic awareness

of words as they get old I hope to not just teach them these rules of language but make it exciting

in ways that they retain it throughout the years.

Spiritually for me, it’s pretty simple. If this is what God has called me to do, to invest

into the lives of children and impart a great education and impact on their lives, then I go into

this fully aware that there will be a spiritual battle and that I need to engage stronger in my

relationship with the Lord. I know in public schools we can’t necessarily mention God, but our

lives and the way we love and interact with our students will be a sweet fragrance of Jesus

Christ. I can’t really say how I can ethically teach, other than connecting with my students.

Getting to know them on a deeper level through their education and just showing that I care.

That I believe in them, which I already do and I don’t even know them yet. I pray that my smile

would impact the way they want to come to school.
