BSCE-V
CE 53 ASSIGNMENT
As part of the review from your previous subject;

1. Explain each component of the water cycle.

2. How important is our water cycle to our water supply?

ANSWERS:

1. WATER CYCLE COMPONENTS:

 Evaporation - The sun heats up the lakes, rivers, oceans, swamps and other
bodies of water which subsequently increase the temperature of the water present
in them. Some water evaporates as vapor into the air. The rising air currents take
the vapor up in the sky.
 Transpiration - The process where plants and trees absorb water through the
roots and then lose water to the atmosphere in the form of vapor which rises up in
the sky through pores in their leaves.
 Condensation - As the vapors rise high, the cooler temperatures make them cool
down and turn back into liquid.  Winds move the moisture around, leading to the
formation of clouds.
 Precipitation - Wind movements cause the cloud particles to collide. As they
become full of water, they develop into rain bearing clouds and fall back onto the
earth’s surface. This may occur in the form of rain, hail, snow or sleet depending
upon temperature conditions.
 Runoff - After the water has fallen and the soil has become saturated, or the snow
has melted, the water follows gravity and falls down any hills, mountains, or other
inclines to form or join rivers. This process is known as ‘runoff,’ and it is how
water comes to rest in lakes and returns to the ocean.
 Infiltration - occurs when surface water enters the soil; The amount of water that
infiltrates the soil varies with the land slope, the amount of vegetation, soil type
and rock type.
 Subsurface Flow - The flow of water at a shallow depth beneath the ground
surface. The subsurface flow can re-emerge at the surface at or near the base of
hill-slopes.
2. All living organisms require water and the water cycle describes the process of
how water moves through the planet. The Water Cycle brings fresh water to
people, animals and plants. It is extremely important to our Water Supply because
if water didn’t naturally recycle itself and distribute freshwater all over the earth’s
surface, we would run out of clean water, which is essential to life and survival.
